rdc12··on Why should I always enable compiler warnings?
Is that a property of the D community being younger (the community itself, rather than the people in the community) and smaller than C and C++ communities. Or is it something more culture based. Any ideas?
rdc12··on A new Linux memory controller promises to save lots of RAM
My first jump was some major change to the MM subsystem
rdc12··on Why should I always enable compiler warnings?
I'm guessing that was a design goal from day one? How hard has been to maintain that goal, as any slip up will become just as hard to fix as in C, right?
rdc12··on Do you have a problem? Write a compiler
I often do a similar thing using emacs macros (I assume most good editors have a similar feature)
rdc12··on The Electoral College and the Knapsack Problem
Another big one think that their vote doesn't count, a drop in the ocean logic.
rdc12··on The Electoral College and the Knapsack Problem
And in 10 to 20 years time move them all again
rdc12··on Stallman Still Heading the GNU Project
A while back he was blocking things like, a package manager for emacs (that does exist now) and making GCC able to export an AST for external tools to manipulate (in particular for emacs to do semantic editing of code).

In both cases since it would make it easier for closed source software to make use of GPL software.

rdc12··on A patent lawsuit against GNOME
Not a GNOME user so I have no idea what the GNOME foundation gets up too, what sort of controversial things have they funded in the past?
rdc12··on Show HN: Darklang
Last time I looked at mrustc, it didn't have a borrow checker it just assumed the lifetimes were valid.
rdc12··on Build a 6502 Computer
New series [1][2] which will be awesome to watch even without buying the kit.

[1] "This series is in progress and more videos are on the way soon!"

[2] "I expect all of the videos will be released by the end of 2019 or sooner."

rdc12··on US city rejects $5.3M ransom demand and restores encrypted files from backup
Little to gain in restoring from backup if the same attack vector is still open. So it was really just a bit of misdirection.
rdc12··on Battle testing data integrity verification with ZFS and Btrfs
Device removal was added in the recent ZoL 0.8 release, so with that you can remove a vdev that is either a sole drive, or a mirror. Currently it can't be used to remove a RAIDZx vdev thou. It does carry a memory overhead for a remap table , but this does shrink as old allocations are retired back to the pool.

And the first alpha for RAIDZ expansion became available a week or two ago. (For going from say a 6 disk RAIDZ2 vdev, to a 7+ disk RAIDZ2 vdev). Just in case anyone decides to play with this feature, the on disk format for this feature is not stable yet, only use it on test pools.

rdc12··on I don't know how CPUs work so I simulated one in code
Did you manage to make the latch in the end? I would imagine feedback would be a tricky subject to try learn without help.
rdc12··on The Search for the Extra Pedal (2017)
You would probably find that the teams would just add a hundred new flaps that give a relatively small amount of extra down-force each.
rdc12··on Dyson Lightcycle Task Lamp
The downside to cheap and changeable, is it creates products that are disposable which contributes to a tonne of waste.

I do miss having items that when they break, I could pull apart and repair too.

rdc12··on Lockdown Mode on the Librem 5: Beyond Hardware Kill Switches
There are some images of the phone on this page of their website [1]. Looks like a fairly clean generic phone really, other than having more physical side buttons than normal

rdc12··on Can fake names create bias in interviewing?
And his dad, Martin Sheen's birth name was Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez
rdc12··on The potential risk to ZFS created by the shift in its userbase
Except only recently we have seen an instance of access to an API being removed that has broken the build of ZoL, while this one is at worst case a performance regression it does show that the mainline kernel is very much able to breaking ZoL with an API change.

The last paragraph is pretty telling too.

rdc12··on Ask HN: What should a systems/low-level software engineer know?
I would be keen to see the list on both storage and distributed systems.

For compilers the dragon book has fallen out of favor (especially as a first compiler book/source). Modern Compiler in ML (don't touch the Java or C versions) and Engineering a Compiler tend to be the goto books now.

rdc12··on Algorithms, by Jeff Erickson
This was a common approach at my Uni. I only once challenged it, but the issue was an entire question wasn't marked at all, so the lecturer didn't remark the rest.

One other time, I asked the lecturer (different paper) where I went wrong on a question, and turn's out I was right all along, got that question regraded without the potential downside to a full remark.

rdc12··on The Titanic Was on Fire for Days Before the Iceberg Hit
Or Titanic's sister ship Britannic which was larger, thou was never uses as a passenger liner, due to sinking during service in WW1
rdc12··on Parachuting Beavers into Idaho's Wilderness? Yes, It Really Happened (2015)
A follow on article that includes a video of the drop can be found here - http://www.boisestatepublicradio.org/post/remember-parachuti...
rdc12··on Redox – A Unix-Like Operating System Written in Rust
There was Venti in Plan9 that had this style of approach.

rdc12··on C2x: the next real revision of the C standard
That is one thing I would like to see too. That does seem to be one place where the newer challengers to C, are able to have a significant advantage over C.
rdc12··on Build Your Own Professional-Grade Audio Amp on the Sort-Of Cheap
Also hunting (in stores, second-hand places etc) for particular records is quite an enjoyable experience and the climatic moment of finding something special compared to clicking a couple of buttons, and waiting for the download to finish
rdc12··on Modern Microprocessors – A 90-Minute Guide (2001-2016)
Looks like IEEE, ACM and ResearchGate all have a copy of Designing an Alpha Microprocessor, but the first two are paywalled and the latter requires you to request the text (possibly with pay too)

Couldn't find anything sadly on the other thou

rdc12··on The Little Typer
The worlds population living on $10/day, will have no use for a book on a niche aspect of type systems. The majority of people on that wage will probably not even access to a computer.
rdc12··on DD, DU and DF – The Three Linux Commands You Should Commit to Memory
"sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda

This will wipe your disk entirely and there is no recovery possible, though some sysadmins are of the opinion that you should repeat the above at least three times to be absolutely sure!"

The secure erase ATA command is probably a better bet, between bad block management and over-provisioning there is too many places data can survive an OS level purge.

But if you really want to be sure, take the disc out of the case and smash it with a hammer, pretty difficult to recover data after that.

rdc12··on Can you use the terminal for everything? [video]
That is more a product of complexity thou.

The other day I was doing some basic data collection and graphing, with the initial version being done in Excel, for something as basic as adding a trendline I had to resort to googling the answer, and following a sequence of several click this, then click this style to get what I needed.

Turns out it was actually easier to understand how to do what I needed using python matplotlib (not a CLI program granted).

Design, documentation and managing complexity are far more important to discoverability than GUI vs CLI.

rdc12··on Mac-like FreeBSD Laptop
Fairly cheap to pickup a USB Wifi dongle (and many of them are almost flush to the port), might be a better bet than a Broadcom internal card (thou no experience of FreeBSD with Broadcom, just a general thought).
