rdamico··on Lessons Learned: A non-designer's attempt at a redesign
"Use gradients and drop shadows like salt and pepper."

This can work in some situations, but you should also be careful of over-using these accents. If you look at a site like amazon.com, for example, you'll see that they use solid colors and "flat" text more than gradients and drop shadows.

"Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course."

Wow, these guys are serious. Wonder what aspects of SC2 they plan to actually break down quantitatively using differential equations...

rdamico··on Is Precognition Real?
If I'm reading this article correctly, it claims that there is statistically significant evidence that:

1) Precognition (at least when it comes to guessing where erotic photos will show up on a computer screen) is a real phenomenon

2) Precognition abilities are related to changes in the Earth's magnetic field

This certainly sounds hard to believe, but IF these experiments do turn out to be repeatable in the future (that remains to be seen), what effect would this have on our fundamental understanding of how the world works? It's pretty mind-blowing.

rdamico··on PDF goodness in Chrome
I wonder how this will affect Google's online PDF viewer [1]. On one hand Google can clearly provide a faster experience by rolling their own client-side viewer, but on the other an online viewer can be used across browsers and devices, and more easily integrate with Google Docs.

rdamico··on My Start-Up: 3000 unique users a day, only 3 offers?
Couldn't agree more with krisneuharth. I think many people have posted on this thread in an attempt to provide constructive, candid feedback to help you out, but the way you are reacting so negatively to it all is really counterproductive.

One trait you'll find in any successful entrepreneur is the ability to have a thick skin and be open to feedback from others, even when it isn't what they want to hear. That doesn't mean you need to act on or even agree with others' advice, but if you really want to increase your chances of success you need to be able to at least hear others out in a respectful way.

rdamico··on Coming Soon in Google Docs: Third Party Apps, Cloud Printing and Sync
I would be curious to hear what kinds of third-party applications people would like to see in Google Docs if they do end up making this possible.

rdamico··on Offer HN: I will review and critique your CV.
If you want to make notes directly on peoples' resumes, you can use crocodoc (YC W2010) to view and mark them up online. (Disclaimer: I'm one of the co-founders!)

Just forward their emails (w/ attachments) to upload@crocodoc.com, or upload them directly through crocodoc.com. Either way you'll receive a unique crocodoc URL you can use to view, mark up, and share each resume with its creator.

Would love to hear your feedback if you end up giving this a try!

Note: You don't need to create a crocodoc account to use the service (which is free), but I'd suggest doing so to keep track of all the resumes it looks like you'll be working on :)

Example document: https://crocodoc.com/demo1 (note: since this is a demo document your changes won't actually be saved)

rdamico··on Why your desk job is slowly killing you

rdamico··on Crocodoc (YC W10) Closes Angel Round, Launches New Document Collaboration Tools
I wonder how crocodoc would behave if we integrated with HN so that each HN user showed up in crocodoc (and anonymous users were unable to comment)...
rdamico··on How to Lose Time and Money
My personal experience: Sometimes you catch yourself in a state where you keep getting stuck in "fake work" mode no matter how hard you try to be productive. When this happens, take it as a sign that you may be approaching burnout (especially for those who try to cram insane amounts of work into the day), and GO RELAX / HAVE FUN (and don't feel guilty about it). Either way you're going to lose some "real work" time, but at least this way you'll be doing something that will help you refocus and be more productive the next time you sit down to work.
rdamico··on Why does Adobe Acrobat take 15 minutes to open a PDF?
Thanks for the constructive feedback -- your comments are very helpful. If you ever feel like telling us more about what we can do to make crocodoc a no-brainer to use, drop us an email through our site :)
rdamico··on Why does Adobe Acrobat take 15 minutes to open a PDF?
This is Ryan Damico from crocodoc (YC Winter 2010), an online app for marking up and reviewing PDF files (as well as other document types). One of the reasons we started crocodoc is that Adobe's tools for working with PDF files (including Reader) are way behind the times (e.g. slow, desktop based, difficult to collaborate).

That said, crocodoc is still early in development and has some kinks of its own we're working on, but we think there's a lot of room for innovation in this space. Would love to hear any feedback!

Great article. It seems that simply using Gmail over SSL would mitigate the email-related issues here, no?
rdamico··on Y Combinator presents 26 new startups
I'm a co-founder at crocodoc, and would be interested to hear your reasoning behind your "will sell, but will not have too many users" comment. It sounds like you have a specific niche market in mind that you think crocodoc will gain traction in to the exclusion of others?
