rch··on Show HN: Distributed JMAP and IMAP Servers in Rust
Wow, I had no idea some of those names were under that license. Thanks!

I'm even a Signal subscriber, and just didn't think about that aspect of their shared source model.

I mentioned number of contributors as that attribute is generally predictive for longer running, healthy projects.

rch··on Show HN: Distributed JMAP and IMAP Servers in Rust
Solid work, but I haven't seen too many AGPL projects prosper over time. I'll set a reminder to check back in a year or so to look for contributor growth.
rch··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
Be sure to include the cost of hiring graduates as part of the administration or government into the cost.
rch··on Subprime loans for college hiding in plain sight
I've been hearing the "college teaches you how to think" trope less often lately. Can't imagine why.
rch··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
I watch Netflix with captions on and the sound low or muted, so I can multitask reading other things. It's easier to follow parallel streams of text than voice and text at the same time.
rch··on EVGA terminates Nvidia partnership [video]
Exactly. I've had enough theoretical conversations about this to know there are organizations who would be happy to help assess any particular situation.

Different industry, but it might be worth looking into how New Belgium went employee owned, with apparently equitable results:

rch··on Patagonia founder gives away the company
I've found that 'climate change' activism leads with wealth redistribution, social justice, and even socialism in a general sense. Biodiversity activism, on the other hand, tends to organize around reducing anthropogenic sources of CO2/CH4, establishing wildlife corridors, protecting watersheds, and so forth.

Both are valid and there's obviously a lot of welcome, positive alignment.

rch··on Apache NetBeans 15
I could be mistaken as well, but this is the old Sun page for the IDE I'm referring to:

https://archive.ph/Qzllr

It looks like ffj predates the NetBeans acquisition, but it's hard to tell without a definitive reference. I found the original URL above via the C2 wiki.

rch··on Apache NetBeans 15
I remember it as Eclipse taking over from Forte 4 Java, then NetBeans trying to regain share with various gimmicks, culminating with a fancy GUI layout tool that would have been excellent if it hadn't been exclusive to NetBeans.
rch··on Cake – A C23 compiler frond end written from scratch in C
Agreed!
rch··on Cake – A C23 compiler frond end written from scratch in C
Typo in the title as well - although I like the idea that a programmer in the future will search for a contemporary feature called a 'compiler frond' and happen upon this discussion.
rch··on Hydrogen battery startup says it has $700M order backlog
The largest windows didn't have shades, but some did. We'd also use free standing shades to help keep specific areas cool.

Some of the features of RMI's Carbondale office would probably be worth considering as part of a more thoughtful design.

Also, you're correct that there was never a need to store energy for months on end, at least at our latitude.

rch··on Hydrogen battery startup says it has $700M order backlog
Based on my experience living in a large home in Colorado designed for passive solar heating, the trees would block the windows in summer so we'd stay comfortable without AC, but the sun was really intense in what should have been the cooler months. I'd definitely do some thorough modeling before building one of my own.

Along with solar thermal and photovoltaics, I'd use a redox flow battery for long term storage, and a GEK for emergency generation (too loud for casual use).

rch··on Google Pixel 6 still freezes when calling Emergency Services
Pixel 5 is still solid. I skipped the 6 because of comments on HN, but I'll probably have to update to the 7 when it comes out.

In the meantime, I'd also like to try the Librem 5 US. This thread is convincing me to give it a shot anyway.

rch··on Elixir – Phoenix LiveView Native
I enjoy using Elixir but I've never been able to get into any of the forums, channels, etc.

Maybe there are better metrics to gage momentum.

rch··on Framework is now available in Australia
Sibling comment covered it, and I only see integrated graphics on the website. I said 'full size' since I've got both 15 and 16 inch MBPs, of various generations.

Personally, I appreciate that Alacritty works well with what I've got on the Framework.

rch··on Will young Americans want to work in semiconductor manufacturing? [video]
Offering people time and flexibility is also effective. Some could work '4 on 4 off' schedules, for example.
rch··on Framework is now available in Australia
I've been happy with my Framework, running Fedora w/ i3wm.

It's a little annoying to switch from a full-size MBP to the smaller form factor though. Hopefully we'll see a larger model at some point.

rch··on Pakistan's floods have created 100km-wide inland lake, satellite images
It could be unprecedented on 100-1000 year timescales, and still be within geologic norms.

Just trying to categorize this event relative to e.g. Greenland ice sheet melting.

rch··on Pakistan's floods have created 100km-wide inland lake, satellite images
> turning what were once agricultural fields into a giant inland lake. It's a shocking transformation

Is the agricultural capacity of this area dependent on periodic flooding, similar to historical patterns of the Nile?

rch··on D2: A new declarative language to turn text into diagrams
If it was open source with a permissive license I'd start paying immediately, like I have with other projects.

> if it wasn't paid.

Maybe you intended to say 'if it wasn't closed', or similar.

rch··on Java in the Browser
I used a graph analysis app ~2011 that communicated with the server over zmq and rendered via lwjgl. At the time, and perhaps even now, it wouldn't have been reasonable to expect adequate performance if all the results of interactive manipulation were executed on the client hardware. Which was unfortunate for me since I'd also spent a few weeks writing code to visualize the same data, and it was definitely a 'works on my machine' application.

I've considered revisiting the problem, but probably not following the implementation discussed here.

rch··on BRL-CAD
> Mike Muuss himself wrote back with a bunch of demo files attached.

That's kind of awesome. I built it from source a few years after that and didn't have to deal with any headaches at all.

rch··on Ask HN: Who is using C++ as the main language for new project?
I'm working with Apache Kudu on a regular basis, but coding in C++ maybe 20% relative to other languages.

rch··on The semantic web is dead – Long live the semantic web
> contexts at different properties for different types

It seems like I could use syntax from HOCON to achieve this in a less verbose way, perhaps with minor changes to the parser.

> have a schema and perform the elaboration from there

I like your schema approach. I'll have to experiment a bit.
