rblatz··on Amazon's "Just Walk Out" checkout turns out to be 1000 workers watching you shop
Honestly I think it's cool that Amszaon took that approach. Do things that don't scale to better understand the value/market fit. Then you can work on the hard problem of building the complicated tech to enable it at scale. So often companies jump straight to the hard tech issues without even trying to learn from the real world.
rblatz··on A proposal to add signals to JavaScript
The lack of signals isn’t remotely the largest issue with JS, and adding them has minimal impact for most users of JavaScript. The biggest issue is the lack of a standard library, resulting in npm hell in most projects.
rblatz··on A ‘double brood’ of periodical cicadas will emerge in 2024
I went through one of these in Ohio in the early 2000s. It was intense, there were huge dense clouds of cicadas flying around. It was extremely loud, and my windshield was a complete mess.

It really did feel like a biblical plague of locusts.

rblatz··on Thierry Breton: Under DMA, there is no room for threats by gatekeepers
Profit and expenses can be shifted. I’m not aware of how they can shift revenue.
rblatz··on Money bubble
It's not an all or nothing situation you can put an AI agent in front of real agents, if the AI agent is able to answer the customers question you do not need to escalate to a real human. That could allow 10 humans to now do the job of say 20. Did AI replace those 10 jobs, I'd argue yes.
rblatz··on New York medical school eliminates tuition after $1B gift
”... he didn't pay any federal income tax.”

rblatz··on I taught the Iliad to Chinese teenagers (2021)
If you look at the opposite of rebellious as conformist both have negative connotations, and I think in general American culture values at least in theory rebelliousness over conformity, even if in practice there is a strong conformist push from those in charge.
rblatz··on My experiment in phonelessness was a failure, and it also changed my life
I’m in my 40s, how would you expect to court a partner without a phone?

There is already plenty accounts out there that even the relatively small barrier of iMessage -> SMS is a large enough of an inconvenience to stop a lot of casual relationships from moving to the next level or even continuing.

Having no phone means you are basically unreachable for most of the day. A much more significant hurdle to get over. It’s possible to find another like minded person but that is a very tiny minority of people looking for a partner. It’s not the 90s anymore and people are accustomed to living in this constantly connected world. Look at most sitcoms from the 90s so many of the situations they find themselves in just aren’t relatable because of the easy communication we have with everyone at all times.

rblatz··on We've already seen category 6 hurricanes – scientists want to make it official
Category 1 - 74-95 mph

Category 2 - 96-110 mph

Category 3 - 111-129 mph

Category 4 - 130-156 mph

Category 5 - 157 mph or higher

I’m not sure why these divisions were made. The jumps between are seemingly arbitrary, from 27 mph to 15 mph and no pattern I can discern. What makes the next jump to 192 which is the largest jump yet?

rblatz··on Senator Wyden Letter Confirms NSA Is Buying US Persons' Data from Data Brokers
The issue is that it’s the NSA, they’re not supposed to be investigate US citizens. They are supposed to be foreign signals intelligence.

I’d fully expect the FBI or CIA to do this. I’m not even sure it’s wrong for them to do that. At least no more wrong than anyone else that buys it in order to advertise you.

rblatz··on Colorado pastor charged for cryptocurrency scam he perpetrated at God's command
You are obviously passionate about other people’s genitalia, but putting words in his mouth and accusing him of bias when it’s clear from context what he meant is a bad look.
rblatz··on 1,100 Declassified U.S. Nuclear Targets
Can you provide details? I’ve not heard any concern about the readiness of US weapons, but have heard a lot since the Ukraine war about the poor state of Russian military equipment.
rblatz··on A rise in oral nicotine pouch use raises health concerns for high schoolers
The same could be said of coffee
rblatz··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
Preferring Whataburger over In-n-out is the most Texas thing there is. It’s more true of a stereotype than most Texas stereotypes like Cowboy Boots, cowboy hats, guns, or high school football.
rblatz··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
I’m not sure if that’s a joke or if there is a rural Arizona McDonalds franchisee that has a history of being litigious.

If anything I’d expect McDonalds to block API access for this user and implement controls to limit data aggregation.

rblatz··on Live record of being fired from Cloudflare during a redundancy plan [video]
Terminating for non performance reasons can impact H1B employees, including renewals or new hires.

There are also other reasons, but if at all possible a company would want to make any termination for performance if it has any case at all for it.

rblatz··on Higher fees, more ads: streaming cashes in by using the old tactics of cable TV
TV with ads isn’t an option anymore. We went back home over Christmas and our parents both watch either cable tv or ad supported Hulu. I felt like i couldn’t get into the shows, we were constantly interrupted by ads. I’d rather just not watch television than watch a never ending stream of advertising.
rblatz··on Show HN: I made an app that consolidated 18 apps (doc, sheet, form, site, chat…)
That was my exact thought. Sounds like a very similar idea. Would love to know what they are thinking would be the differentiator between Notes and their offering? Specifically the hat advantages they have that would lead them to think their offering would gain traction were as Notes has been on a long slow decline.
rblatz··on Was Javascript really made in 10 days?
I had a professor that claimed to have invented the name ECMAScript. He said that they were arguing about the name for this new standard and weren't moving forward so he proposed a name so awful that they'd have to come back later to change it, so the argument could be put on hold for the time being. Then they never came back to fix it.

rblatz··on Sony software updates breaks movie theater projectors
Sonos isn’t Bluetooth speakers, they have a couple in their portable lineup that do offer Bluetooth, but last I checked the majority don’t offer Bluetooth and to be honest I like it better this way.

Not having my phone locked up to only play music is awesome, being able to use voice control to play specific songs and have them play throughout the house is awesome. Bluetooth is a pain, not being able to use Instagram (or any other app that wants control of audio) while my daughter listens to a song sucks.

rblatz··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
That’s true of many countries, including The US.

rblatz··on I'm building a self-destructing USB drive (2022)
I was thinking along the lines of setting the highest bit on the address line to either 1 or 0 based on the resistance, and programming the device to report half the capacity of the nand chip.
rblatz··on What Happens When a Poor State Guts Its Public University

rblatz··on Ozempic could change the economy as we know it
Anyone even slightly overweight can go to a clinic and get semaglutide that day.
rblatz··on Ozempic could change the economy as we know it
Side effects are generally mild on ozempic like acid reflux and can be controlled easily with a PPI like pantoprazole. Accutane was absolute hell.
