rb808··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
No it means when I'm vacation I want to be with people that are also interested in doing interesting things. Not bros on laptops talking about their social media engagement.
rb808··on Domesticating Kubernetes
expensive though?
rb808··on Domesticating Kubernetes
I've given up running my own k8s at home a couple of times. It does seem to be getting easier, but then upgrading and maintaining breaks me again. + the other stuff like running your own container registry. Then with new centos podman breaks everything that worked OK in docker. I hate this stuff, so many problems its worth ignoring the whole stack.
rb808··on A sweary, ranty YouTuber who's become an isolation cooking sensation
I can't get my Australian friends 'dry as a nun's nasty', metaphor out of my head when talking in polite company.
rb808··on Colleges at the breaking point, forcing ‘hard choices’ about education
What I dont understand about US law school is that you can't start directly as your first degree like every other country.
rb808··on The average consumer loses over $150 a year renting a router from their ISP
+ a set top box too. The combined amount is probably more than most European countries pay for their whole bill.
rb808··on Rules of thumb for a 1x developer
The fact he did all this while at Amazon surely means the WLB is better than reputation?
rb808··on No-code founders are on the rise. Are they making money?
There is something in-between where many engineers end up linking together a bunch PAAS and maybe a bit of front end to come up with a app or website.

In the old days you had to understand pointers and backups and efficient joins in your rdbms, the level of abstraction now is much higher.

rb808··on MySQL Sharding at Quora
> The result is that we do very few joins in MySQL

What is the point of using a RDBMS if you never do queries?

rb808··on How I photograph the Milky Way with medium format film
Its a good time to recommend Southern Hemisphere for star gazing, the milky way is much more visible its overwhelming.
rb808··on Best Practices for Working with Configuration in Python Applications
This and the list of other libraries in responses is a great reason to avoid Python. Its nearly as bad as Javascript, how are you supposed to live with this.
rb808··on 'Insect apocalypse' more complicated than thought
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_d...

Still many countries are >2 but they're falling rapidly too. Its surprising to me to see Bangladesh at 2.1 and India at 2.2.

Places like S Korea 1.1, Italy 1.3, Japan 1.4 you can do the math yourself. (1.3/2)^N means without immigration their populations nearly disappear in 100 years.

Russia 1.6, China 1.6, Thailand 1.5 takes maybe 12 generations to do the same.

rb808··on Career advice for people with bad luck
A lot of talk here that colleagues aren't friends.

What is wrong with you people? If you like your colleagues you can invite them to do stuff after you or they leave. They probably haven't invited you because they never got around to it either.

Most of the older generation people met through work is the only way to make friends.

No wonder loneliness is so rampant now.

rb808··on If a MacBook Pro runs hot or shows high kernel CPU, try charging it on the right
what screen do you have? I definitely prefer Thinkpads, but Mac screens are generally better. 4k sounds like it sucks battery too much.
rb808··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
Thinking is an important skill, which is why scientific experiments, essay writing and philosophy are so important. Integrating equations, not important.
rb808··on Conversations with a six-year-old on functional programming (2018)
I see a lot of articles that try to make FP look really easy. The majority of programmers have a lot of trouble figuring out how to figure out a typical FP program with its layers of nested functions. It isn't easy, which is why most code bases are not FP.
rb808··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
The real question should be is why are US textbooks so hard when most people never need HS math after finishing school, and lack so many other skills that are never taught.
rb808··on Whole Foods is tracking and scoring stores it deems at risk of unionizing
I had a friend who worked for a union supermarket chain. It went bankrupt as it had trouble competing with non-union chains like Whole Foods who pay their staff half of the old chains but somehow get a reputation for treating employees well. It would be good to know which stores are union and which ones aren't because it isn't obvious.
rb808··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
Its amazing how dumb most charging is for smart devices. I plug my phone in every night and it does a quick charge then sits there and does nothing the rest of the night. It even knows my alarm clock time, surely it should be smart enough to slowly charge all night.
rb808··on Covid-19 at a homeless shelter in Boston: Implications for universal testing
Also 15% of pregnant Moms in NYC had the virus. This could already be much more widely spread that people think.

rb808··on Apache Druid vs. Time-Series Databases
I stumbled across Druid (with superset) and it looks great but has a really low profile, even though it is in a hot area. Does anyone actually use it?
rb808··on Half of American workers would rather work from home forever: poll
I should add our juniors are getting screwed. Usually we spend a lot of time training and coaching, now at home they're mostly ignored. I think our intern class is going to get cancelled too.
rb808··on Half of American workers would rather work from home forever: poll
I heard on WFH opinions there are two groups of people, one that think this will usher in a new age of productive freedom working from home never having to commute again, and the group with kids.
rb808··on Why Aren’t More Users More Happy With Our VMs? Part 1 (2018)
dotnet does this, caches compiled assemblies then also tunes them. https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/what-is-just-in-time-jit-compi...
rb808··on Fed to buy junk bonds, lend to states in fresh virus support
> We could give money to people/government directly. Why create money as private debt?

Effectively it is. Government borrows money from the Fed and pays everyone a $1200 stimulus check.

rb808··on New Google SRE book: Building Secure and Reliable Systems
Any tips for the vast majority of SRE groups where people are paid a fraction of google employees and never given any time to fix things?
rb808··on A Little Clojure
There are a hardcore group of developers that love functional languages. Whenever I look it just looks pointlessly complicated.

Maybe its because I'm not smart enough? Given that 99% of software is not written in these languages perhaps you have to have a special gene to figure this stuff out. Or maybe its just people trying to be different or trying out things on the fringe.

I'm not sure what the answer is or if I should try harder.

rb808··on Bootstrap v5: drop Internet Explorer support
> download this

Holy Sh*t. That means a: users can install software and b: they listen to some vendor telling them to install stuff. I'm shocked either still happens.

rb808··on Ask HN: What are your favorite low-coding apps / tools as a developer?
jhipster is good for basic crud apps.
