rb808··on Support Single-File Apps in .NET 5
OK I get it, makes sense.
rb808··on Support Single-File Apps in .NET 5
BTW One thing I've always liked about dotnet is the binary is an executable and you run that not the interpreter/vm process. When you look at list of prcesses running you see your process, not java or python.

On windows the dotnet runtime is so ubiquitous I'm a bit surprised this is needed.

rb808··on Sell Yourself, Sell Your Work
> We live our lives as if they were a business enterprise with a balance sheet, always selling, always advertising, always figuring out how to put our personality on display,

I think this is a very American thing to do. In most other cultures this is not true. Notably the OP is presumably British and my British grand parents most definitely were not "always selling" nor "putting their personality on display".

rb808··on Ask HN: “Git” for Microsoft Office?
Word and Excel have Review menu items that allow fixing documents then adding edits and comments which need approving. Make sure you know how this works because most people dont use it.
rb808··on The Intel Comet Lake Core i9-10900K, i7-10700K, i5-10500K CPU Review
I have a six year old i5-2500 and a 10700K is quicker but still not twice as fast as the 2500. Its really not worth the upgrade.

rb808··on 402 Payment Required, and why micropayments are doomed
> Cryptocurrencies are not a magic bullet here.

Many CCs are great for micropayments, its just bitcoin that sucks - it shouldn't be that popular.

rb808··on New York Times phasing out all 3rd-party advertising data
Now compare to nj.com
rb808··on AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Review: Why Is This Amazon's Best Selling CPU?
4k is more than resolution too, has more colors that can't be shown in regular RGB formats.
rb808··on AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Review: Why Is This Amazon's Best Selling CPU?
The bundled cooler with the Ryzen helps a lot as well, as those low tech hunks of metal are crazy expensive.
rb808··on It’s Time to Get Back to RSS
>The fair market price for content is $0.

I would have agree with this two years ago but things have changed. I'm just worn down with the huge volume of free dross that doesn't tell you anything. This year I've started subscribing to a bunch of resources and stopped with google news/fb noise.

rb808··on Where coronavirus hospitalizations are falling
With the many covid websites out there its surprisingly difficult to find the information you want. https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus-ny/ is quite good in that it shows the total number of people in hostpital over time, and change in intubations. NY State only.
rb808··on Swift 5.3 Will Be Supported on Windows and Additional Linux Distributions
Agreed but with touchscreens the trackpad isnt so important.
rb808··on $14M in ETH stolen from Upbit were laundered in May through well-known exchanges
Are there any authorities that help track down stuff like this now? If you can pay taxes on it you'd think the police would help investigate a theft.
rb808··on Google Erases Thousands of Links, Tricked by Phony Complaints
Sorry dont get me wrong, its probably still the top FANG to work for. Just that it isn't elite.
rb808··on Google Erases Thousands of Links, Tricked by Phony Complaints
Google is too big to be elite now. 120,000 people, they're just another corporation.
rb808··on Ask HN: Best resources for non-technical founders to understand hacker mindset?
I liked Founders at Work by Jessica Livingston, but it isnt clear what you mean.
rb808··on Toilet Paper Orientation
At least TP orientation is semi-public. Wait til you think about debate over how many TP sheets you should use and if you're a folder or a scruncher.
rb808··on Toilet Paper Orientation
I dont understand why the size of bathroom isn't taken into consideration for this important debate.

I've been in small bathrooms where your knees are basically touching the wall, under makes sense because it isn't hanging out. Other American super sized bathrooms you have to reach to get the paper it makes sense to be over.

rb808··on What developers should know about TCP
Lol I'll probably buy it and put on my bookshelf with all the others.
rb808··on What developers should know about TCP
Great I thought I'll take a look. Three volumes each over 1000 pages? Any other suggestions? Did you mean all 3 books?
rb808··on So you want to write your own CSV code (2014)
Wow never heard of it before. The biggest problem is Excel and text editors rule the small data world.
rb808··on TSMC to Build Advanced Semiconductor Factory in Arizona
We should rename SV to Social Media Valley :)
rb808··on How to prepare for losing your programming job
> I maintain a file of headhunters that I have come in contact with.

Its definitely good to keep in touch with a list of people like this. I think you'd be better off to ask your friends for recommended people. Most recruiters that randomly contact you are crap.

rb808··on How to prepare for losing your programming job
I usually work many years at the same job. I think its worth talking to agents and applying for jobs each year even if you wont move, its a good way to keep track of the market and realize where you're behind, before you need to look.
rb808··on Mortgage delinquencies will exceed Great Recession levels
It depends on which state you are in, but if you have a non-recourse loan and bought the house with a small deposit which you can lose, it might be a good strategy just to stop paying the mortgage until you get repossessed. In many states it takes a long time even when things are normal. In 2008 many people got to live in their house for years without paying. You'll screw up your credit and probably lose your equity but might be worth it. Do some research.
rb808··on Coming to Chrome: a new way to use tabs
Agreed, isn't this what bookmarks are for? BTW I always use bookmark toolbar, maybe this is similar to keeping tabs.
rb808··on Linux is Most Used OS in Microsoft Azure – over 50 percent of VM cores
no
rb808··on Patio11's Law: The software economy is bigger than you think
The crazy thing is for most of the world people use Windows and SAP and firewalled intranets and no external email. Apple laptops and free access to the internet and SV culture is a tiny minority of what the world's computing looks like.
rb808··on Linux is Most Used OS in Microsoft Azure – over 50 percent of VM cores
I worked on a derivatives system for a bank where we had a few thousand servers globally running distributed calculations. We chose C# over Java as it was more powerful at the time. Windows server was rock solid throughout, it also had the benefit of being integrated with Windows security. Now Linux you can run dotnet applications OK we'd probably choose that because its cheaper not because its better. Most server applications you just need a bare OS and run a process, it doesn't need much.
rb808··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
Any reason why they would continue to hire American Developers? Our shops in Moscow and Bangalore probably have better developers than our US office at <10% of the salary.
