razingeden··on Ask HN: Does anyone else notice that gas runs out faster than usual
I did notice the MPG in a 2025 sedan with 19000 miles reading around 9–12mpg this week with a distance to empty of 170 on a full tank. It was more like 330, had been getting worse (200s) and now this.

And I have an old ford truck that absolutely wreaks of gas/exhaust or something rich when it’s keyed on now. Getting 9-12mpg in that thing wouldn’t get me to bat an eye but come on; in the new car?

Wasn’t doing this until I’d just filled it up last week. The last tank I went through was probably from February? I don’t drive it that much. You could say it has a pretty simple exhaust system that wouldn’t do as good of a job at masking theoretical adulterants. That didn’t even cross my mind, I just noticed this horrible noxious smell when I re parked it last night.

Los Angeles at the moment.

Didn’t California just lose a couple refineries who said no thanks and took a billion dollar loss rather than confirm to new environmental regulations?

You must be seeing ants over the fact that you can’t put the parent commenter on some “list” that prevents me from seeing a reasoned and reasonably civil comment that you disagree with.

20,000,000 accounts out of 60,000,000 [0] have already fled Bluesky in despair and will never return to it. Including some of its own creators, like jack Dorsey.

Their technology stack is completely irrelevant because it is botted to death, its user base are aggressive, angry lunatics who drag every single new account through purity tests and struggle sessions. Okay it’s a cool stack, but I wouldn’t go there or read that shit for a million dollars.

When 30% of your accounts delete themselves and never look back, it’s not even a fringe opinion that your sites toxic and not worth engaging with. And no. I’m not going to stop reading HN or participating in a dead IRC chatroom with 10 people in it just because “social media” sites are all , in the balance, equally worthless.

The stuff that gets normalized on Twitter and the stuff that gets normalized on Bluesky both disgust me. The internet is a big place and I have other options. HN is one of the few places left where quite a lot of that is not socially acceptable.

razingeden··on How to turn anything into a router
That takes me back, I had the same trajectory , getting a newspaper’s news room and offices online with a single computer sharing its ISDN connection. Think ours was also a 100mhz gateway 2000 computer or some such.

That snowballed into “we want a website do you know how to do that?” and. Well, no, but it had Apache available and I … figured things out enough to take the skills elsewhere.

Repeated the same trick with a place in Wisconsin, who initially shared a 56k dialup connection with all their dispatchers and were impressed the thing had stayed up for 900 days without even redialing. 90% of their work was done in an on-prem wyse terminal anyway, dialup used to do the job for email or googling an address.

27, 28 years later I’m still dragged in front of them once in a while to ask how they can accomplish something cheaply with Linux, bubble gum, paper clips, or whatever . The times and technology have changed, but not how cheap they are!

I hadn’t even considered that. Don’t know why that comment is greyed out or downvoted.

It’s a static site that hasn’t been updated since 2016—- so it’s .. since been moved to cloudflare r2 where it’s getting a $0.00 bill, and it now has a disallow / directive. I’m not sure if it’s being obeyed because the cf dash still says it’s getting 700-1300 hits a day even with all the anti bot, “cf managed robots” stuff for ai crawlers in there.

The content is so dry and irrelevant I just can’t even fathom 1/100th of that being legitimate human interest but I thought these things just vacuumed up and stole everyone’s content instead of nailing their pages constantly?

razingeden··on ChatGPT won't let you type until Cloudflare reads your React state
It is direct financial damage if my servers not on an unmetered connection — after years of bills coming in around $3/mo I got a surprise >$800 bill on a site nobody on earth appears to care about besides AI scrapers.

It hasn’t even been updated in years so hell if I know why it needs to be fetched constantly and aggressively, - but fuck every single one of these companies now whining about bots scraping and victimizing them, here’s my violin.

razingeden··on Apple Just Lost Me
Oh, it’s a joint lawsuit apparently. Didn’t know that thanks for that.

I’d just get updates from pacer. 1:25-cv-2880 in the District of Columbia. I’m not super interested in this to go look today but leaving it here for future reference once there’s more filings and hearings in the case. This would eventually become “interesting” to me no matter who had raised the federal question(s). Personalities aside , I would rather just stick to the case filings and the findings of fact in there.

Aside from being a “dick” I’ve already made the mistake of looking there for scoops and burned a few brain cells wading through wildly speculative legal interpretations from a crazed mob that has next to no basis in reality.

I guess it has to be someone with standing to sue ofcom and tell them where to stick it and I’d have a really hard time pretending I don’t approve of cantankerous defenses of 1A.

To be fair I think some people do come on to HN to plug something legitimate or interesting or valuable but they get looked at through the same lens as a spammer and sometimes judged maybe a little too harshly with out a little more context or history about how they participate or play or post on HN. It’s not to scold you at all, just to give you some context. I hope you stick around and dust yourself off and get established here. Welcome and I wish you great luck with this and all your other future endeavors!
razingeden··on Apple Just Lost Me
So far , anyone telling OFCOM where to shove it (think: 4chan) doesn’t have any kind of operations or presence in the UK , is refusing to pay their fines, denies being under their jurisdiction — and doesn’t seem to care if they get blocked by the whole country.

I don’t think much of that is true for Apple, even though there isn’t even a so called law they’re even following. They’re just doing the opposite and rolling over and pre emptively complying with OFCOM. We’re going to have to look elsewhere for resistance

I’ve had it with Apple and there’s nothing they can do that would salvage my perception of them or make it any worse than it already is. So this company is a bunch of boot lickers on top of everything else that sucks about them, the only reason I’ll ever buy another Mac is if Linux can ever be installed on something beyond the m1/m2 processor.

Fuck Apple as a company, nice hardware— but a trash Fisher Price operating system that they somehow just managed to make even worse than it already was.

razingeden··on Does nobody care about not being able to copy from Slack anymore?
Current slack app can copy and paste via app and contextual menus in 26.2

However safari does some of the same stuff you’re describing. I’ve found it difficult to edit a single typo in a URL or get to the end of it to add or modify a path lately. And then I can’t cut or copy characters in some fields unless I first add a few more— then the copy and cut options come back.

I’ve seen it groused about on HN ..and though I just had no problem cutting and pasting this URL from safari just now, I’m with you — this comes and goes anx I spend a lot of time swearing at this behavior

I can consistently reproduce it on WP editor in safari - seems like it starts leaking memory after two or three edit/saves and can only be cured by clearing cache and starting over. Even then it’s become unusable and I lose work so I have to use desktop

Editing HN comments hits it too.

razingeden··on Ask HN: How do you handle peer-to-peer discovery on iOS without a server?
fair, I wouldn’t want a business model that’s dependent on something they could take away overnight.

so that’s discovery, I don’t have any ideas about retention offhand (you already do) but you’ve had that question rattling around for awhile and it’s new to me.

razingeden··on Ask HN: How do you handle peer-to-peer discovery on iOS without a server?
Ah yeah. They solve that by referencing the lorawan ble MAC But you know that.

did you find this project in your travels yet? apparently some portions of it stay and remain uniquely identifiable which this team considers a bug and apples position on it for now is a wont-fix

https://github.com/furiousMAC/continuity

I like the fact that they rotate them (and WiFi addresses) out so I don’t get stalked with tailored ads in Walmart or whatever but they only went so far with it and it’s probably still feasible

razingeden··on Ask HN: How do you handle peer-to-peer discovery on iOS without a server?
I’m going to feel like a jerk for not reading the source to figure out if it’s done in firmware or software before I point to it but meshtastic is doing something on both platforms to find new lorawan nodes and populate them in your device cache and it’s open source.

It’s something that’s consistent across both platforms is why I mention it, I don’t currently have an esp32 laying around to see if it’s done in the UI on the client or on the esp32 itself- mostly because I disliked the heltec and moved to an area where nobody’s using them now. I’m stuck on this question of trying other makes and models or giving up on the lorawan thing. For the moment I’m pegged out on how far I wanted to go with it.

Virtue signal away. I’m with whatever device and OS purveyors are willing to tell these tyrants to get stuffed.

I haven’t cut over to it completely yet but I think this’ll be the last nail in the coffin for my time as an Apple user. It’s already a loveless marriage , it’s already over, I’m already sleeping with GrapheneOS on the side. it’s asking when I’m going to leave her and it’s always “soon, baby. soon.”

razingeden··on Tinybox – A powerful computer for deep learning
it’s worse than no ground connection. There’s no neutral connection so they replaced neutrals with ground.

I believe that’s kinda naughty.

It works, but it energizes your ground plane and people do get mildly shocked. that’s making me a little nervous.

So holes have been drilled in ceilings and walls and single wire neutrals or grounds have been fished down the walls, repeatedly, by yours truly , but there’s still at least one “gfci” outlet that’s wired this way And they’re balking at getting an electrician back out here for.

bridging neutral to ground because the neutral lines dead, uh, “works” to be technical but whoever did this moved on years ago and heaven only knows how many outlets or fixtures this was done in. I’m just finding out one by one as someone goes “hey this stopped working!”and you pull it and the neutral or ground blew like a fuse.

So that’s my whole point, this is an extremely bad idea for a 3200watt computer.

yes, they are all getting snipped and blank wall plated and marked as hazards that need to be remediated with a Dymo labeler as I discover them.

I don’t work here I just live here and have kind of a slummy owner who doesn’t want to do anything about any of it and doesn’t care if the plumbing or electrical works.

But they paid some guy like $4000 to install a totally unnecessary subpanel that’s bridging conflicting phases into the same circuits because he didn’t figure out this was what was going on. Dios Mio. I would have fixed the whole house for $1000. Miracle this hovel hasn’t burned to the ground yet.

I’m putting up with it for now but should probably bail before it does.

razingeden··on Cloudflare flags archive.today as "C&C/Botnet"; no longer resolves via 1.1.1.2
Cloudflare dns has gone back and forth on whether it wants to resolve them since 2019. It’s taken that away and restored it again (intentionally? mistake?) at least four times.

The c&c/botnet designation would seem to be new though.

razingeden··on Tinybox – A powerful computer for deep learning
A US circuit is.

But this is re: European 240/250 which is 240 between its load and neutral

I’d say don’t energize either systems ground plane, but , really, don’t do this in EU

razingeden··on Tinybox – A powerful computer for deep learning
yes, this is accurate for US and “works” but it’s against code here. you’ll get mildly shocked by metallic cabinets and fixtures especially if you’re barefoot and become the new shortest path to ground.

old construction in the US sometimes did this intentionally (so old, the house didn’t have grounds. Or to “pass” an inspection and sell a place) but if a licensed electrician sees this they have to fix it.

I’m dealing with a 75 year old house that’s set up this way, the primary issue this is causing is that a 50amp circuit for their HVACs are taking a shorter path to ground inside the house instead of in the panel.

As a result the 50 amp circuit has blown through several of the common 20amp grounds and neutrals and left them with dead light fixtures and outlets because they’re bridged all over the place.

If an HVAC or two does this, I’d advise against this for your 3200 watt AI rig.

EU, you don’t want to try to energize your ground. They use step down transformers or power supplies capable of taking 115-250 (their systems are 240-250V across the load and neutral lines. Not 120 across the load and neutral like ours.)

in the US. you’re talking about energizing your ground plane with 120v and I don’t want to call that safe… but it’s REALLY NOT SAFE to make yourself the shortest path to ground on say. a wet bathroom floor. with 220V-250v.

Hi Nathan,

At least on genuine apple hardware with a real serial:

The iMessage thing is probably because certain root certificates expired in high sierra and others by now and they can be updated manually. [0]

https://osxchateau.com/articles/updating-ssl-certificates-on...

A bunch expired in 2019 and Apple pushed new installer versions for several OS releases going back to Yosemite. High Sierra made the cut but you don’t have to reinstall [1]

https://tidbits.com/2019/10/28/redownload-archived-macos-ins...

You’d see this if you booted off the CD or recovery partition. an Internet restore should be okay.

You can also get a newer macOS on that laptop altogether using something called OpenCore. I think I stopped somewhere around Monterey but my 2013 clunker would run Tahoe if you wanted it to. I had a newer m1 I just gave away but I had updated the Intel because it was still in mint condition and ran perfectly. I still preferred it to the new one. I just needed a functional browser. /rant
