raydiatian··on Why I Hate Frameworks (2005)
Any non-toy web service development, I disagree. HTTP is great except for the fact that as a protocol it carries no built-in mechanism for introspection on the services/types offered by an API. Openapi addressed this. But building an openapi spec by hand is moronic. Frameworks like fastapi or nestjs (forgive me if im forgetting your favorite) will generate an openapi spec. That spec can be used to autogenerate type safe clients, which solve the problem of HTTP not having discoverability or type safety.

raydiatian··on DMT, Derealization, and Depersonalization
Ya but I mean the potential of psychedelics today is their use in controlled therapeutic settings, so it’s not a shit take. Every aspect I pointed out from this article runs directly counter to the goals of establishing psychedelic therapies: that those therapies be guided, prepared, and dosed by body weight.

> merely raising awareness

This is so dumb it hurts, have we not been living in a war on drugs since the 1960’s, whose awareness is being raised, “drugs are bad mmkay”

And that pulls back around to my point. We’ve been living in an anti-drug context for so long, both the emerging markets and the mental health benefits are not served by anecdotal accounts of idiots not looking before they leap.

raydiatian··on DMT, Derealization, and Depersonalization
This genuinely seems like a psychedelics hit piece. This joombah mentions taking psychedelics with zero preparation: alone, on a whim, without concern for dosage. For real? I have no sympathy for him. Nobody is this naive, and if he is perhaps it’s Mother Nature doing her magic.

Amazon is at a scale where it’s more profitable to behave outside the law and accept the fines, than behave inside. This is a problem.

raydiatian··on Loneliness is stronger when not alone
Good for young people graduating college or with 1yr of work under their belt. Quit your job, buy gear, disappear.

Go ultra light. Essentially become homeless. Own at most two pairs of clothing. Don’t worry about showering daily (or weekly), but keep your face clean and your teeth brushed. Don’t let the gear&food on your back exceed 35lbs (15kg). Sleep under the stars when it isn’t raining.

How I felt during: pretty rad. there’s this surreal thing that happens when you spend all day in direct contact with the sun and the moon. You feel physically connected to the solar system. You sense the Sun behind the earth at night. You get a real emotional connection with the environment and that has made climate change a bit more personal for me. In general, I’d never felt as much joy as I felt then. There’s this other surreal thing that happens. If you quit your job to go hike, you start seeing the weeks in front of you as bare and free, and the present becomes one long continuous moment.

I also spent a lot of my spare time reading old classical Greek and American philosophy. Seneca, Plato, Socrates, Marcus Aurelius, Ayn Rand, Thoreau, Emerson. It plugged me into the “meta-game” aspect of life, of course we’re all living but how could we live.

Takeaways: society is full of strings, things you don’t actually need to survive. time is better spent learning or exploring. it’s okay to abandon people that you feel you’ve outgrown. People my age (mid 30s) talk about how stressed they are and I can honestly say my attitude was permanently changed by that trip. I suppose Im a happy nihilist. Nothing matters, but that’s not a bad thing. I’m not hitting all of my goals, but my understanding of what reality is has been fundamentally altered where I know it’s not all about me, so losing is actually not a problem. It’s a lesson for me in the present, and my loss might become somebody else’s gain.

raydiatian··on Loneliness is stronger when not alone
Everybody should go hike for a month and be alone in nature. It shook out of me any notion that loneliness is a bad thing.
raydiatian··on TypeScript 5.2's new keyword: 'Using'
This shit pisses me off. This goes against the language design anti goals. And there’s way more stuff from other languages that is far more valuable than using.

raydiatian··on Experiences won’t make you happier than possessions
The most profound experience I ever had was experiencing days as whole moments on a sabbatical where I just hiked for months straight.

My only possessions were about 20 lbs of gear. I can promise you, the possessions were necessary to make the experience possible but I don’t have a relationship with that year.

I have a relationship with the memory of how reality works when you disconnect from society and plug into nature.

raydiatian··on Modern work requires attention – constant alerts steal it
Solution: disable notifications. It turns out life is pretty great when you don’t know what’s happening in the news cycle. “But how will I hold relevant conversations with my friends and family?” If all you discuss with your community is current events, congratulations, you’re the perfect unit of manufactured consent.

raydiatian··on Ask HN: Can someone ELI5 transformers and the “Attention is all we need” paper?
It’s like saying “I have no basis in differential equations or complex numbers or Newtonian mechanics or experimental findings on the wavelike nature of light but could somebody explain the Schrödinger equation derivation like I’m five?”

Like, there’s a reason we don’t explain things to five year olds.

Also I have a good ELI5 answer, so I don’t know what else you want dude lol so petty

raydiatian··on Ask HN: Can someone ELI5 transformers and the “Attention is all we need” paper?
It’s not really something you need to understand unless you’re an ML researcher.

I guess the ELI5 (with a BUNCH of details left out) is “Transformers: what if you didn’t have to process sentences as a sequence of words, but rather as a picture of words.”

raydiatian··on AI is just someone else's intelligence
I'd argue that precisely the converse is true: A book contains intelligence (as do all things), but it cannot actively communicate it.

Maybe the intelligence/knowledge debate needs to be had, where:

1. intelligence implies the autonomy to act on knowledge

2. knowledge is the derivative of intelligent action

So you could argue ChatGPT is AGK: artificially generally knowledgeable. And then of course we can restrict books to being "knowledgeable" entities rather than overloading the term "intelligence".
