rasso··on Secure Custom Fields by WordPress.org
4 years ago it was still great. I had one contact with WPE support since they bought the plugin last year or so and it was the most frustrating support interaction I ever had. It felt like I was writing with an AI that was prompted to drive me crazy so that I would leave them alone.
rasso··on Secure Custom Fields by WordPress.org
Exactly. ACF is free and open source. ACF Pro is not. Secure Custom Fields is based on the free version (ACF, without "Pro").
rasso··on Secure Custom Fields
Oh my, this is actually a dream come true for me. I was pretty worried when Advanced Custom Fields was sold from it's original developer, Elliot Condon to Delicios Brains, and then after just about a year again to WP Engine. I had a support contact with WP Engine only once and it was a pure nightmare.
rasso··on Emoji as a Favicon Using SVG (2022)
Where does Safari even show Emojis?
rasso··on CSS Grid Areas
That‘s a very popular over-simplification. A better one would be:

Flexbox -> the children define the size Grid -> the parent is in control

rasso··on CSS Grid Areas
Kevin Powell has a few great videos on YT comparing flexbox to grid. Grid can be very powerful if you want overlapping grid areas. Something that was previously only possible using absolute positioning. Also, auto-fit and auto-fill
rasso··on CSS Classes Considered Harmful
You can tell custom elements what they are using the „is“ attribute or by extending the appropriate HTMLElement class if you define the custom element via JS.
rasso··on A Case Study of CSR
Even though I like some of the insights this repos readme provides, I personally don‘t agree that CSR is the better approach. But I‘d like to read a few more opinions on the essay, so I posted it here.
rasso··on Ghost Jobs – it's not your fault that you are not getting hired in 2024 [video]
Another reason I could imagine for fake job postings: the company looks more successful if it has a lot of open positions listed. Kind of like a free advertising.
rasso··on Everyone has JavaScript, right?
So, you have found three points that might not apply. Does that make the point of the article invalid? I think it doesn‘t.
rasso··on Android features I envy as an iPhone user
As a non native english speaker, your comment makes me feel highly uncomfortable. Do I need to use perfect english to be allowed to publish my thoughts? I don‘t think so.
rasso··on Faces.js, a JavaScript library for generating vector-based cartoon faces
Exactly, why not! Love it.
rasso··on htmx 2.0.0-beta1
I‘d also like to know what you mean by tab sleep restoration.
rasso··on Where I'm at on the whole CSS-Tricks thing
I love WordPress. It often times feels to me like the React of content management systems. Most used, most hated, infinitely powerful.
rasso··on GitHub now officially supports polar.sh as a funding platform
How can I create a polar account for a GitHub org instead of only a single user?
rasso··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
Except real privacy?
rasso··on TypeScript NPM Packages Done Right
Yes it does
rasso··on Ask HN: Where do I find good code to read?
Yes, absolutely beautiful
rasso··on Show HN: We built swup+fragment-plugin to visually enhance classic websites
When I was researching it, hotwire/turbo looked more like in between of page transition libraries and tools like htmx or Unpoly. There were some issues with the history IIRC, that‘s one reason I didn‘t start using it.
rasso··on Show HN: We built swup+fragment-plugin to visually enhance classic websites
Great to hear that you like it! Regarding the "script kiddies": We all started out like that and made our mistakes along the way, didn't we? For now it's enough for me if people with appreciation for web standards and accessibility find this and start using it in real-world projects. That will make the tool more robust and future-proof. And who knows, maybe it holds out long enough in it's little niche until the kids are grown?!

I'd be happy if anyone who likes it gives it a star on GitHub. That's how things get traction nowadays, I heard ;)

rasso··on Show HN: We built swup+fragment-plugin to visually enhance classic websites
Oh, interesting to hear that feedback. We actually changed the slogan just recently with the new major version of swup, because it became much more versatile and extensible than in previous versions ;)
rasso··on Show HN: We built swup+fragment-plugin to visually enhance classic websites
Do you mean screenshots on the front page of the demo site, to explain the behavior more clearly?
rasso··on Show HN: We built swup+fragment-plugin to visually enhance classic websites
Yes it is. But the fragment support and focus on accessibility is something that was never cleanly solvable with these tools as far as I know.

Hello aendruk! I guess you are referring to the animations? That's a matter of taste of course, and I took it to the extreme for the demo, to show what's possible. It's of course very questionable if this would be a good idea for every last website, but there are use cases where it can make sense (portfolio sites, for example)
rasso··on Clock
I was SUCH a huge fan of Yugop! The front page reminded me of him immediately. Good times.
rasso··on Alpine.js
Actually, HTMX has a fundamental flaw if it comes to history restoration: In some scenarios it takes snapshots of the DOM for history navigation, just before navigating away from a page. If the DOM was previously modified by other JS libraries like Alpine, jQuery or any other tool, these changes end up in the history snapshot, leading to unexpected results [1]. I've had a much smoother experience with Alpine + swup [2]. Disclaimer: I became a maintainer of swup this year.

rasso··on Wasm-service: Htmx, WebAssembly, Rust, ServiceWorker proof of concept
With `hx-boost`, you can progressively enhance your server-rendered website to an SPA, just like with hotwire/turbo [0] or swup [1] (which I'm using a lot these days). This technique can come with a few other benefits apart from nicer page transitions, like preloading links on mouseenter and caching of visited pages.

rasso··on Wasm-service: Htmx, WebAssembly, Rust, ServiceWorker proof of concept
Intersting. How did you work around the issue that HTMX takes snapshots of the altered DOM (by Alpinejs) for history navigation [0]? This is the biggest issue holding me back from using the two together.
