rasjani··on Robot Framework: generic open source automation framework
@fabioz who also posted to this discussion has been building "language server protocol" support for robot framework for a while now and is being sponsored to do so by a company called Robocorp.

RIDE is not at least officially "not maintained" but my POV is that the current maintainer might not be up to the task -- or at least doesn't have time to dedicate to its maintenance.

> And in order to display test statistics in Jenkins, just install RF plugin in Jenkins and instruct your job to read the output XML and you get nice statistics, reporting etc.

Sadly, that same thing can be also a negative side.. There is really no proper way to expose the results if you are not using Jenkins as your main CI. Ofcourse one can use junit reports or whip up a own listener that will generate some sort of test reports for the given ci platform...

rasjani··on Robot Framework: generic open source automation framework
I was also in nokia and we where pitched to use RF - at the time, we (well, i) made a decision of not to use it - mainly because our actual testing tool was implemented in ruby and using remote library wasnt really possible for our scenario and also i didnt like the test data format then (we where pitched to use a frigin EXCEL or html tables) ..

Things have changed a lot from those times though and I am somewhat happy camper with robot in its current state. Its not without its warts but definitely has come a long way since "nokia days".

rasjani··on Ask HN: Which startups have the most interesting pivot stories?
Nokia was initially a single pulp mill around Tampere/Nokia region.
rasjani··on How the biggest consumer apps got their first 1k users
I’ve been a soundsystem mc and organizing parties since 97. I have noticed similar behavior on the patrons attending. People either need to get tipsy enough or someone else has to have the courage and be the first one dancing. Now, even if it’s not my show, I tend to be early on dancing and that usually opens up “queue”.. ratio of lurkers is ofcourse high but the genre is more geared towards people coming to actually dance.

> This is the spiritual successor of the Nokia N900

There was next iteration called N950 which resembles this device even more. Sadly, it never shipped but I think Nokia shipped 100-200 prototypes to app devs before whole burning platform happened.

rasjani··on Python strings are immutable, but only sometimes
It feels like its just "magic" number. Probably id() is the actual raw pointer to str class and the string starts at offset 48 ?
rasjani··on Rethinking Sanakirja
Sanakirja is compound word: sana meaning word and kirja meaning book.
rasjani··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
Id go even deeper than hiphop. Jamaican music that was essentially a big influence to rap, was “singles” market from the start and album stuff was more about pleasing the international crowds.
rasjani··on IBM looking for 12 years’ experience in Kubernetes administration
Seen this so many times in my LI feed and people point out that kubernetes wasn’t even out 12 years ago.

So that’s the joke of course but to make this even more sweeter I’d point out that even Go wasn’t publicly available. Wikipedia mentioned that first remarks about Go where from 2009 :)

rasjani··on A guide to freelancing in Finland
And this was a reply to climate_realist but somehow the mobile client made my reply a top level comment to OP.
rasjani··on A guide to freelancing in Finland
Few foss projects and authors that started in this god forsaken country, Finland:

Linux - Linus Torvalds. Finn Ssh - Tatu Ylönen. Finn IRC - Jarkko Oikarinen. Finn. Dovecot - Timo Sirainen. Finn. Robot Framework - Pekka Klarck. Finn.

And maybe not fortune100 or even 500 companies but companies like Nokia, F-secure, Futuremark have had their global impact. And Yeah. These are old tech already but saying that no innovations came out out of Finland or Europe is just plain bullsh*t.

rasjani··on Ask HN: Why are modern music players so bad at playing music in random order?
Never used pandora but MixRadio was the best for my taste. Spotify is nice but it’s really fucking hard to find new stuff that within Spotify itself.
rasjani··on The cutting-edge of cutting: How Japanese scissors have evolved (2018)
While I have not tried many “brand” scissors, a Finnish Fiskars has really good ones.
rasjani··on Unity Editor for Linux
Problem so far has been that unity dev tools where windows only while Linux would still be a target.
rasjani··on Firefox 67.0 Released
What addons are installed is one criteria of bowser fingerprinting.
rasjani··on Show HN: Hacker Feed – An iOS app for reading Hacker News
Looks really nice. I leave it installed but won’t be my daily driver until it gets darkmode and ability to post replies.
rasjani··on Qutebrowser, a web browser written in Python
It also shipped as default browser in Sailfish OS.
rasjani··on Programmer Migration Patterns
Worked for a big game engine company for brief moment - most of the backend micro services in a single project where previously written in nodejs but all new stuff was written in go. My first and so far last project with go - all I can say it was quite fast to get up and running but echoing the same complaint many have said about go: error handling boilerplate gets annoying fast.
rasjani··on How the 45 RPM Single Changed Music
Didn’t know about genre thing. I just found it funny how author referred to color presses. Maybe I didn’t catch the meaning correctly but it sounded like having those was something obscure
rasjani··on How the 45 RPM Single Changed Music
Indeed thats the case. I was just referring to what some people think about colored vinyls due to picture discs. I haven’t really seen 7” picture disks so talking about albums: singles have nicer sound..
rasjani··on How the 45 RPM Single Changed Music
Funny how the author thinks colored vinyls existed then :) my first vinyl release had something like 50 copies in red due some reasons (we ordered all black cuz it was cheaper). Pretty sure one can still order colored vinyls but it’s a “common knowledge” that black ones last longer. Can’t say if that has any merit or not.
rasjani··on How the 45 RPM Single Changed Music
I don’t have any answer but after reading the headine, came to post this: https://youtu.be/HucOdgey9NE
rasjani··on Skype is better, but still problematic
But judging from some error messages I’ve seen, it looks like the voice capabilities in teams are still just embedded Lync/Skype. Might be wrong.
rasjani··on Travis CI acquired by Idera
I’m quite liking azure for now and most of my company’s foss projects run there. But. Reason for getting lost is abysmally bad documentation. Yeah, all that I need is there but it’s structured so so bad.

Also, hosted agents have small inconsistencies that make the pipeline to have ton of do this on Linux but not in OS X or windows and so forth...

rasjani··on What's New in JavaScript for 2019
Did you look at the proposal ? Declaration #name prefixed with hashtag. I really hope that won’t go thru.
rasjani··on Compiler Explorer
I haven’t really tried it but from all the exposure godbolt gets in cppcast, I think there is a way to run it locally.
rasjani··on Ask HN: 40+ Career Advice?
Totally agree. Been in it professionally since ‘97. I’m not a superstar or anything but people who have hired me have always done it because of this. As a self educated, i still keep myself updated as that’s always been the passion that drove me here.

And observation about flip side: When Nokia came crashing down, lot of engineers where (and still are) struggling to get a new job. They had been working on same area for decades, with tools that are limited to their old work - and no desire to take chances and trying out something different.

Yeah, age can be limiting factor, sometimes, but don’t let it be because of your own fault.

rasjani··on The Murgia Hack System

rasjani··on In-Depth: Static Code Analysis (2011)
While back, i did a tool that uses clang sa, tidy and cppcheck to provide more information to our existing Coverity scans. For coverity scans, mostly the meaningful stuff was enabled and results compared to clang & cppcheck where not that different. Next time id just to with those and not bother with coverity unless licensing is already there and some aspects require coverity..

Anyway, more is better. Coverity is nice once you get it setup and you have recentlish version but combine it with open source offerings too!
