rargulati··on Apple dictates that all new apps must fully support the iPhone X screen
Skimming through the comments in this thread, I'm uncertain what people think goes on during the design and manufacturing phase at a hardware company at the scale of Apple (and if someone does quite a bit in this space, I'd love to hear from industrial designers and folks in supply-chain manufacturing).

At the design phase for FaceID, competing designs are presented, each with their own tradeoffs. These are then culled further for a manufacturing phase, where the design is further iterated on. Finally, they are presented with the limitations of supply-chain and engineering.

Why would a company at Apple's scale not test out many different variations and ask the question: why the notch > black bar on the top (or even embedded into the device itself)? From a marketing perspective, a black bar would have been worse - less distinctive, less screen, potentially more noticeable in a bad way ("the screen you don't have", "wasteful"). The complaints may have been similar. Given the compromises between the target device size, actual requirements of FaceID, and distinctive look, I'd say Apple hit their goals and the market is mostly receptive.

rargulati··on Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Author of Black Swan, on Bitcoin
Payment processing and banking in the United States is woefully behind the rest of the world. Globally, the system is complex, obtuse, and fragmented enough to result in a shanty town of technological solutions that are just lipstick on a pig.

The hope here is that the introduction of blockchains and cryptocurrencies into public discourse, and public excitement regarding a digital mechanism to store and receive value might be the kick in the pants that the banks need to roll-out better banking tools and systems. Furthermore, the first bank to run a publicly auditable ledger which can be validated externally will set a precedent for transparency.

I'm not sure what the future of cryptocurrencies will be (though I'm bullish), but those would be huge wins for society.

rargulati··on Bitcoin dropping after BTC China said it is closing
> We've been able to send money all over the world for decades now, I can literally send my friend in New Zealand $50 using an app on my phone. Not sure how Bitcoin makes this any easier. Maybe it makes it a bit cheaper, assuming it's value doesn't plummet while your transfer is going through?

It's not about sending $50, it's about sending $5,000,000.00. Which is an entirely different class of problem (paperwork, fees, process). Making that cheaper, faster, easier.

Would love to learn more about the activities or structural issues that led to getting the surgery. Also, what were the types of things you heard over 10 years (or treatments you attempted) before getting the surgery? Basically, would love to hear your story / more details here - thanks :)
rargulati··on Silicon Valley Women, in Cultural Shift, Frankly Describe Sexual Harassment
Here we are, a moment where history changes, but human nature doesn't.

It is true: these women are brave and correct in action. The men failed in their professional responsibilities. Silicon Valley has the advantage of being the keeper of a market where the individuals in the labor pool have greater rights than their counterparts in Hollywood and Wall Street (where similar ongoings are typically kept hush-hush).

Yet what will be the outcome? Will the men with money now be afraid to take a professional meeting with a woman for fear of their own desires OR for fear that something negative will come of it? If the risk of a meeting may now include the risk of a lawsuit / losing your position and reputation, the calculus doesn't work out.

This could lead to a strange dystopian outcome: segregated funnels. Women VCs / Male VCs - some overlap may occur, but most end up meeting with their own gender.

Or not. Just a thought experiment on incentives and outcomes. Most likely we'll go back to regularly scheduled programming in a few months time. Some folks get kicked out, and a new batch will be there to replace 'em.

rargulati··on The Bounty Hunter of Wall Street
Left has established himself as a one-man pr machine. His actions are credible enough to move stock prices. This credibility emerges from the feedback loop between:

1) his network of informants with positions they want affected by Left

2) his ability to cut through and taste-make the winning story

This is clearly a PR piece for Left and his ilk and helps bolster that narrative.

That doesn't change the fact that it's a great read.

rargulati··on United Passenger “Removal”: A Reporting and Management Failure
On overbooking, this is a solved problem: hold an auction where the max payoff is the risk in dollars X, distributed amongst Y passengers (the number of seats you need to free up). Start at some low anchor point ("$300 to get off the plane") and increment up until you have takers. If the total value exceeds X, write it off - you messed up.

I believe other airlines implement this in some capacity.

I personally use Cloak as it was easy to set up (https://www.getcloak.com/), but I'll be adding proxy.sh (https://proxy.sh) as my primary soon (on recommendation from a few security minded friends and their logging policy).

Really interesting - thanks for sharing the findings. I haven't seen it mentioned here, but for those of us using `timedatectl` via systemd, with the default setting of `UTC` are taking advantage[1] of the recommendation in the article.

I could see this being really, really great for planning/requirements meetings or code review. For those things, it's really helpful to get out of the normal work space and into a slightly different mindset. For building, I agree with the other repliers: definitely helps to be in a closed off area with minimal distractions.

rargulati··on See the things you’ve searched for, visited, and watched on Google services
That's incorrect. The GP comment (tinco) is simply relaying a story that says that Google should know that he and his significant other have disjoint interests and query patterns (though they share devices and location). It's an anecdotal story. Someone else could have said that they like things in the join of the two interest sets and dislike something else. Tinco's story helps us learn more about the "entangled session" problem - a known area of research in Google (per the constructive response from nostradamons). Claims aren't made about how to go about doing that (people searching for X will never search for Y), just that Google should have a way of addressing Tinco's specific case.
rargulati··on TV Advertising
Ha! I'm a year late. Thanks for sharing.
rargulati··on TV Advertising
"What does TV advertising get replaced with?

Snapchat. Recently, they’ve been injecting ads into their stories (these clips are on average about 10 seconds). A few things I found interesting about the implementation and observing others interactions with the ads:

1) At being 10 seconds, the ads are relatively short and contextually relevant. They flow more naturally in the stories than a television ad in linear programming. There’s likely strict quality control being enforced by Snapchat. It will be interesting to see them scale this.

2) As a user progresses further along in a story, does a user become more invested in the story (this is a thread of related snaps that Snapchat curates) or are they more likely to bounce before the end. In television, you’ve got the hook of the narrative keeping the user until the end. That would dictate ad placement. Recently Snapchat has done something interesting to combat this: giving the user different story paths to go into (from a given story point).

3) Most importantly, as a user, you’re able to skip the advertisements if you want (and go on with the story). This creates a pressure on the advertiser to create engaging and contextually relevant ads. The feedback of length of time played, number of times skipped, etc all create signals on creative performance (historically difficult to judge on television as it’s not an interactive medium).

This is markedly different from the typical television advertisement. There’s the element of engagement of the user (skip or stay), the constrained view time, and constraint of being relevant to the surrounding content. This creates a competitive pressure that television ads haven’t faced.

Edit: This isn't to say that Snapchat is final platform for this medium of advertisements. These learnings (and more) will likely be applied to most social networks that enforce constraints on short-form video advertisements.

I believe that would 100 users for the service that you would write using their api. See bottom of this page: https://plaid.com/products/ (playing around with the api to help make a self-use budgeting app - under the current terms, this use case would be free).

rargulati··on Do not talk about pricing
Think you nailed it on the head with your example - with food, you're fulfilling a necessary contract with your body. You have to eat, and even if the pizza is terrible and you're unhappy with it, you've satisfied the necessity of eating.

With the app, not only are you out a few dollars, you potentially commit the sin of wasting your time by not fulfilling any desires. Though the upside is exponential (in relation to the food), so is the downside.

rargulati··on It's the Future
Anecdotally, something I've seen work in the B2B space is framing the message `n` different ways for each type (n) of stakeholder. So you'd have a quick view of value props and stories for the CIO, the IT director, etc. Sometimes it's hard to find the general value proposition, and it's much easier to have the different cohorts self-select into the message that means the most to them. And sure, sometimes this doesn't cut it and you have to get on the phone.

The general message could still be there (kitchy and sexy), the focus would still be on the end user (developer), but others wouldn't have a hard time finding the message that resonates with them.

Has anyone else seen this strategy succeed (or fail) for their business?

rargulati··on Ask HN: How much money does an average VC make?
Part of raising money from (most) LPs requires a bit of showmanship akin to that of Lawyers and Investment Bankers. This goes beyond the taking a "client" out to dinner. It's the expectation of living a specific lifestyle and the perceptions the wealthy have of those asking for money. Also, consider the amount raised (typically XX million+). That usually allows you to pay $200-300k salaries (though whether that's right / justified is a different conversation).

As wealth changes hands over time, this expectation may change.
