rapfaria··on A Research Preview of Codex
They said Plus soon, not today.
rapfaria··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
When I was working at $samsung_competitor, my NDA'd next gen android phone prototypes (a huge motherboard with a screen) were sent some years earlier. Like Samsung is on S25 now, and we would get boards for S27... It takes a long time for these things to evolve.
rapfaria··on I made my AI think harder by making it argue with itself. It works stupidly well
Or "thinking" just got a new meaning and it's to convey information in the field - perhaps the Oxford dictionary will add it soon?
rapfaria··on Cozy video games can quell stress and anxiety
Going in the exact same direction?
rapfaria··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
You can have several unique keys, a few are unique to the whole system (like your phone number, Physical Persons Register (CPF)), but you can have several randomly generated per bank. Usually you tell someone your phone number, otherwise the random generated string is a big string, and you actually show them a QR code so they can transfer to your account, and vice-versa.
rapfaria··on Gumroad's Interestingly Timed "Open-Source" Play
Something was off when gumroad's founder kept saying "AI now at junior dev level", "AI now at mid dev level" on twitter
rapfaria··on My 16-month theanine self-experiment
Even more crazy than caffeine interaction.
rapfaria··on Postgres Just Cracked the Top Fastest Databases for Analytics
> 2B records of user events during their sessions. As it grew past a 500 million records it turned out to be impossible to query this table in any thing close to real-time - it was basically untouchable because it was so slow.

This is a solved problem, and it seems the technical folks over there lacked the skills to make it work. Having indexes is just the tip of the iceberg. Composite indexes, partitioning, sharding, caching, etc, can lower reads to a few seconds on disk.

rapfaria··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
Have you considered doing your side projects before work?

It takes me one call in the morning, of me saying for the hundreth time in the past 8 months that the integration is still missing data, to get me off the rails for the day. I know at 10AM that I won't touch anything else after work.

Been contemplating starting early and dedicating "the best hours" to myself.

rapfaria··on Things we've learned about building products
> And I sort of said I had some more questions before we moved on to the Super Day.

> And they basically just said: we don't think it's going to work out.

Ouch, so their tight-knit, no-shortcuts hiring process is only thorough for them, not for the engineer applying.

rapfaria··on Show HN: I scrape Steam data every month and it's yours to download for free
Do the HN crowd read "for free" on the title, click it, scan the page in a milisecond, see "Pricing" on the top, and come back to complain in the comments? Geez
rapfaria··on Bacteria (and their metabolites) and depression
Would also want to know this, since one probably needs a lot of muscle to go through this 14 day períod, but those muscles would come from exercising, which also help reducing depression.
rapfaria··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
Exactly, which is why Nubank is miles away from "disrupting" the traditional banks, and not only at what Nubank does.
rapfaria··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
Not sure abou that:

Credit portfolio in 2023:

Itaú - $1176 billion

Banco do Brasil - $1109 billion

Bradesco - $877 billion

Nubank - $91 billion

Nubank also had the highest default rate between them (some 6%).

It was great when it was created (fully digital, no credit score check for a credit card), but it is now dealing with the same problems as the big banks

rapfaria··on How would you start to learn coding today?
I'd ignore advice like "Ask ChatGPT to make you python course". Get a high-rated course on udemy for $10 where they are building projects/products, get Think Python, and build something on your own later. Bonus if you can get it deployed.
rapfaria··on Code reviews: A success story
Same.

> Code reviews have a bad rap: they are antagonistic in nature and, sometimes, pure red tape.

I wonder if folks know that this is a job? What are you gonna do, not do it? Cry at night because you forgot for the hundreth time to add token strings to translation files and not be hard-coded? Come on.

rapfaria··on Waymo achieves 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to human drivers
Waymo is part of Alphabet, Uber posted profits this past yewr...
rapfaria··on Gukesh becomes the youngest chess world champion in history
Yes you would, after 2 weeks of playing 4+ hour matches, knowing Gukesh was playing not to draw all along since Liren is the better player on rapid/blitz (played in case of a draw), and having 10 minutes on the clock against your opponent's 1 hour.
rapfaria··on Show HN: Stretch My Time Off – An Algorithm to Optimize Your Vacation Days
Folks under brazilian law , employed as "CLT", have 30 days PTO, but it must be divided into up to three periods, one of them has to be at least 14 consecutive days, and the other two at least 5 days each.

Sure would be nice to stretch 30 days to 61 as the app suggests...

rapfaria··on New Mac Mini with M4
From the specs:

Up to three displays: Two displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K resolution at 60Hz over HDMI

Up to two displays: One display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI
Are these set in stone? Would it be enough to run say, two external 2560 x 1440 at 144hz?
rapfaria··on Lessons from over 30 Years of Buy versus Rent Decision (2012)
Found the landlord.

OP mentions the cost of moving when you get kicked, and perhaps the "anxiety" cost, when you get a message on January 1st, asking if everything is okay, and he is thinking about selling the house...

rapfaria··on Ask HN: What's (in your opinion) the best authentication method for web apps?
"Humm... I wonder which one of these eight SSO companies I used to sign up for this app"
rapfaria··on Reformatting 100k Files at Google in 2011
After reformatting, did git blame always pointed to those commits and the most recent author, or were they added to --ignore-rev?
rapfaria··on Mathematical Optimization for Cargo Ships
It is really worth a try when demurrage is not even accounted for?

https://developers.google.com/optimization/service/reference...

rapfaria··on Ask HN: How do I change the world?
From a young age We wanna reach for the stars (perhaps mother saying I'm just great?) but the cosmos inside your home is plenty.
rapfaria··on Ask HN: Devs/data scis who pivoted to a new career in 30s/40s, what do you do?
It's crazy how prevalent this is among my peers. Do any other careers have so much pivoting?
rapfaria··on Professional Corner-Cutting (2016)
Perhaps it's not a close relationship. Perhaps the boss is insecure about his management skills and has to constantly check on the team, to make sure every variable is under his radar.
rapfaria··on Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently?
"What if I were to gather these 5 five recipes that really worked in a future... book?."

Bookbinding has fascinating details.

rapfaria··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
I wonder if there is any rules now for funded folks coming to one's linkedin saying "Hey, thank you so much for starring {{insert here YC-AI repo}} on github, that means a lot" when one's never even heard about them before.
rapfaria··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
Agreed but selling your work is an art. Sometimes folks try and sell it so often that it makes me wonder if they are really getting anything done.

Having a boss that loves to sell his team's work to his boss also works wonders.
