ranting-moth··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
Clear cookies and site data for YT and login again.
ranting-moth··on Mtn Dew Raid Q&A [pdf]
How many years until you'll get rewarded extra of your drinking from the can? I'd say 2-3 years.
ranting-moth··on Maelstrom: A workbench for learning distributed systems
Well, if they wore no space suits they would have no space.
ranting-moth··on Stuxnet Source Code
>You don't really need ...

I think that project was way beyond the "really need" stage.

ranting-moth··on Stuxnet Source Code
Yep. I'd be surprised if their QA environment didn't contain at least one uranium centrifuge.
ranting-moth··on Talking with the inventor of C++ [video]
If you know C++ inside out, it's very tricky and frustrating.

I think the problem is that it's "easy" to learn it well enough that you think you know it pretty much all.

But you're still far off and you get frustrated!

ranting-moth··on Why do everyone's logo fonts look the same? (2020)
I think the generic answer is trend and fashion, mixed with fear of failure. If you do it like/similar to everyone else, you won't get the blame.

If the company/brand fails, everyone is going to put the blame on someone else. Yeah, the designer did this strange thing and it totally tanked the brand.

ranting-moth··on LibreChat – Enhanced ChatGPT Clone
Kinda? It's blatantly dishonest.
ranting-moth··on Accidental database programming
I sometimes see interesting links on HN but when I click on them and skim through, I still have no idea what exactly it does. This is one of them.
ranting-moth··on Exactly How Much Life Is on Earth?
I feel very small after seeing that picture.
ranting-moth··on Astronomers posit that we live in an area with below average density
The management called. It's too long. They'd like to shorten it to " " to keep it cool with the kids.
ranting-moth··on Ripgrep is faster than grep, ag, Git grep, ucg, pt, sift (2016)
I'm scared that if I start using Google search syntax in my grepping that I'll mostly get results trying to sell me something :)
ranting-moth··on Brickception
Linux/Firefox: Paddle doesn't move and the paddle popup doesn't bounce the ball.

Linux/Chrome: Paddle doesn't move but the paddle popup does bounce the ball.

ranting-moth··on Show HN: Dobb·E – towards home robots with an open-source platform
I'm no marketing expert. But I'd think the majority of those who have an extra $20k to splash on a home robot are not the type of people who want to buy a prototype for hacking.
ranting-moth··on Elon Musk: "Don't advertise. Go f*** yourself"
Sounds like the classic "See what you made me do!"
ranting-moth··on Elon Musk: "Don't advertise. Go f*** yourself"
>Musk responded that the advertising boycott is likely to kill the company. "What this advertising boycott is going to do is it's going to kill the company, and the whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company and we will document it in great detail," Musk said.

The level of entitlement and social disconnect this guy has is astonishing.

ranting-moth··on Grimoire: Open-Source bookmark manager with extra features
I bookmark and tag a lot of stuff. It's come in handy multiple times.

Even stuff I've read, if I remotely think I'll want to see it again, I bookmark and tag.

I never manually go through my bookmarks, only search them. But they are a pointer back in history for me.

ranting-moth··on Let's Write a Malloc (2014)
Correct. I also think that if the author would have said "minimum viable" or "baseline" in the title then all would have been forgiven.
ranting-moth··on We have lost access to approximately €6k in bounties
Is there "small claims court" in France? I know people who have successfully used one on the UK. You pay a fixed fee and fill in a form.
ranting-moth··on Ubisoft blames 'technical error' for showing pop-up ads in Assassin's Creed
I hate it when I accidentally implement and publish popup ads in my games. Complete with server backend.
ranting-moth··on Subtitle is now open-source
Do you have any references to back that up? To me this just sounds like a sale pitch.
ranting-moth··on Three chips in and Google Tensor is on life support
A friend of mine says that all Google products are on life support. It's just how long they get to stay there before the cable is pulled.
ranting-moth··on Promises Training: Practical Exercises on Promises in JavaScript
Someone has gone through a massive effort of creating this. I'm guessing that he's all in for constructive criticism. Asking for something else and offering only "The writing feels a bit off to me" isn't very helpful or polite IMHO.
ranting-moth··on Promises Training: Practical Exercises on Promises in JavaScript
I'm gonna clone it three times!
ranting-moth··on I kind of killed Mercurial at Mozilla
Of course you can run your project like Linux. Your first requirement is to employ Linus Torvalds as a project manager.
ranting-moth··on Northvolt develops state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery validated at 160 Wh/kg
Which production (save for byproducts) today isn't demand constrained?
ranting-moth··on Northvolt develops state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery validated at 160 Wh/kg
It's a daily recharge for over 13 years. I don't remember having a battery lasting that long.
ranting-moth··on Knuth Airgaps and Knuth Buffers
Knuth is such a likeable man. I get the same feeling watching him talk as I get watching a very experienced woodworker using his hands to create a masterpiece.
ranting-moth··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
There's been a lot of "all working for me" during this YT fiasco. YT is most definitely either doing an A/B testing or rolling this out incrementally.
ranting-moth··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
Using my (very blurry and limited) vision into the future, I see the outlines of an EU fine of biblical proportions.
