rangerelf··on The Gang of Four is wrong and you don't understand delegation (2012)
Yes.

"OOP" is a philosophy more than specific implementation details. I've programmed "object orientedly" in any number of languages, many of those with no object orientation helping syntax, like C, assembly, Forth (although that one's more malleable). It's always been about the mental model of your programming, anything else is syntax sugar.

All discussion about "your not doing true OOP because $REASON" arguments are useless, repetitive, and discouraging to exploration, discovery and learning.

It does (work over ssh). Pretty neat: reconnect to the host and you see all the terminals you left open.

I'm sincerely curious, why do you still have a twitter account?

rangerelf··on Popular Linux orgs Freedesktop and Alpine Linux are scrambling for new webhost
True, but the spirit of the law died a long time ago, and the vision originally created by the founders has been distorted and "mythified" in favor of the desires and vices of monied interests.
rangerelf··on Fiwix: Small Unix-Like Kernel
I think it's a cool project even though I have no interest in downloading and running it, but it's a technological curiosity that might yield some insight of other things.

If you're so hell-bent on knowing what differentiates Fiwix from xv6 why don't you download the projects and compare them? You shouldn't be asking others to do your work for you, or to justify their choices and actions to you.

rangerelf··on Popular Linux orgs Freedesktop and Alpine Linux are scrambling for new webhost
The USA being "Free" has mostly been a myth. It's "Free" if you're a member of the owner class, else you're freedom is subject to the whims of politicians and the wealthy. Aristocracy, really.
rangerelf··on Composable SQL
> I have a bug right now where in some race-condition situation the database is catching the issue with the constraints. I haven't found the bug yet (it's low priority) but at least it's not filling my database with invalid data -- it is just crashing that operation.

This right here. The thing that all proponents for nosqls and "this one trick will turn sql hell into sql heaven" don't seem to take into account is that a properly designed schema will save your ass when the front end(s) have bugs; and yes, properly designing a schema is work, up-front work that needs to be thought about before writing the first line of code (or sql).

Thanks for posting this, at least I know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

It's "just business" to the company, it's very personal to anyone affected by it.

I find "it's just business" and "it's not personal" to be some of the most insulting and gaslighting phrases in the English language, by how they dehumanize the person at the receiving end of them.

rangerelf··on Moving Bricks: Money-laundering practices in the online scam industry
> Note: all that is in a flux now. Personally I trust Telegram less now as it seems the same exceptions the French has made for themselves can also be used by russia or any other terrorist regime.

What made you believe that Russia hasn't had a firehose into Telegram's backend for the longest time?

rangerelf··on Is 'No tax on tips' a distraction from the fight to end sub-minimum wages?
It's not, or at least not always.

Most of the time it's to get them to actually do their job; shitty pay, bad or nonexistent oversight, corruption (or just "bribes") in higher levels too, conditionally applied rules, etc...

That creates a de-facto auction for their time and service, you (and what you're adding on top) vs. everyone else (and what they are adding on top). There's an unofficial "price list" depending on how quick and thorough you want things to be done.

"Tipping culture" easily slides into "bribing culture" when it becomes an expectation, regardless of what the Supreme Court says about it.

rangerelf··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
I bet that if this bit of history was more widely exposed, "tipping culture" would be exposed as the degrading practice that it actually is.
rangerelf··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
This comment made me gag.

"Tipping culture" has definitely gone too far.

What about the pilot and other members at front? Do the tipped flight attendants kick some bucks over to them?

It definitely feels like an abdication of responsibility (and obligations) of the company that those people work for.

rangerelf··on Is 'No tax on tips' a distraction from the fight to end sub-minimum wages?
Because here in the US the tip is considered part of their salary. No tip? You're not paying them for their work, it's no wonder they're ignoring you.

And that can only be fixed with legislation.

rangerelf··on Is 'No tax on tips' a distraction from the fight to end sub-minimum wages?
"Tipping" absolutely is a kind of bribe.

Let's take police officers in México, for México, for example. One needs to pay bribes to get anything done. On the other hand, they have almost zero job protection, have absolutely crappy salaries, most of the time have to buy their own uniforms, their own gas for the police cars, and so forth. And on top of that, they have to contribute to "upwards bribes", so they can keep their jobs.

It might not be identical to the situation of a water at a café, but jeez, does it rhyme with it.

Tipping should be banned. Waitstaff at a restaurant should be considered like any other employee. Tipping someone because they went "above and beyond" should be considered as an insult, because it's literally a bribe, "I'll give you something extra for your trouble".

Alas, it's a bit too idealistic of me to expect that to happen.

rangerelf··on Caltech, long a bastion of male students, enrolls first class of majority women
And this is how we get trump as president.

"Oh, Hillary is not a PERFECT candidate, I'm going to punish the Democratic party because of it and vote for Trump".

Or, one of my favorites,

"Those jerks, they totally passed on Berny! I'm going to vote for Trump!"

Idiots that vote against their (and everyone else's) own interests just because they can't have THE PERFECT candidate is why things are such a mess right now. Always letting PERFECT get in the way of BETTER.

rangerelf··on Californian fed up with stolen mail sends Apple AirTag to herself to catch thief
What a unfettered load of bullshit.

Steal from "normal people" and nothing happens; steal from the owner class and _then_ see what happens.

The pettiness of the crime doesn't matter, what matters is the class the victim belongs to. That's a feature of capitalism.

"Corruption" is not an exclusive feature of socialism.
