randomtask··on Ask HN: Technomading?
> Why not travel around and do rentacoder.com programming gigs once in a while?

I was considering trying this in the near future. Has anyone here used it (or odesk)? If so what was your experience? Is it difficult to get jobs given that depending on where you are people in other countries may be able to undercut your price by a significant amount?

randomtask··on Create the Filter
Supermarket own brand products are often of a much lower quality than branded versions, but sell well because they are cheaper. There is a quality/price trade off with a lot of products and a demand for those on both ends of the spectrum.
randomtask··on Bing Is Live
Ah, I didn't get those. Fair enough.
randomtask··on Bing Is Live
When I type es_msg into Google I too get the "did you mean" link, but the top result is the same as the Bing result.

Yes, Bing does feel really fast, but it's not like I've often felt like I was waiting too long for a Google result.

randomtask··on Ask HN: Getting published in an academic journal without holding or seeking a PhD?
Almost everyone does in certain, but not all, disciplines. A lot of papers in subjects like Biology and Chemistry, for example, don't seem to be as accessible.

randomtask··on Ask HN: Which versioning system to learn on?
If you're looking for a really easy to follow guide to get everything installed quickly then try http://www.geocities.com/arhuaco/doc/subversion/apache-subve...

Subversion also has a really nice Windows client in TortoiseSVN if that's any use to you.

With internet connection? I see a major flaw in your plan...
randomtask··on Ask HN: Just lost my year long placement because they have no work. Begging for advice
First of all fair deuce. I wish I had the motivation you do when I was in your position.

My suggestion is to take a year out anyway even if you don't find something and work a part time job while doing some open source development. This way you will get the experience of working on a large development project with people. When it comes time to interview you will have code that has made it into software that your prospective employer might even use. Also when they google you your name will appear associated with this work.

The successful applicants for the Google SoC have been announced already and there are a whole load of good projects that didn't get picked. You could pick one, approach the team, and tell them you're willing to work on it if they'll mentor you a bit.

Cool. Good luck :) This area is desperately in need of some innovation.
randomtask··on Rate my Startup: inamoon.com
An interesting idea. Just some comments:

The explanation of how it works is pretty confusing. For instance you say "As an example, if a consumer spends half of his time reading the wikipedia, the wikipedia would get a $4.50 credit at the end of the month." Does that mean that the service costs $9 a month or $10 because you've removed 10% for the free pool? If so why do I have to figure this out from that bit of text? If this is just an example amount then a better explanation like "Say a user pays $10 a month, and they spend half their time reading wikipedia, then at the end of the month wikipedia is paid $4.50 from that user."

I would remove the formula on the "how" page. That seems like something you might need to change later. Perhaps say that producers get a share of the revenue provided by users' subscription fees that is proportional to the amount of time each user spends on the producer's website.

It seems to me that you should separate the explanations for producers and consumers. Consumers probably don't care about how the producers get paid, they just care about what content is available and how much it will cost them a month to access it (yes I realise you're still in the finding the content phase and this may well be your plan, but the site currently has text clearly directed at consumers). Producers on the other hand will want to know in detail how much they can expect to make a month from this service. Also the front page is giving me mixed messages. On the one hand "Support the sites you depend on, without lifting a finger.", on the other "Start monetizing your web traffic today. Login". Sounds like you're talking to two different people there. Should I not login if I just want to access content?

The iframes in the examples are pretty horrible, but that's just my opinion. I would prefer a link to an example.

randomtask··on Perl saved my vacation
Is it this? http://www.mooredynasty.com/Blog/CalvinAndHobbesKickInTheBut...

I kid :)

randomtask··on Perl saved my vacation
Perhaps they aren't the only two possibilities?
randomtask··on The Cross-Platform Myth
I think you're right. Gaming certainly seems like it would suffer a lot less from this, because the interface doesn't generally function like that of a typical Windows/Mac/etc. application with a familiar look and feel. Your game mostly gets away with it, but it's always subtle things that give away a non-native app. In your case it's using control instead of the apple key as a modifier key, which is not the expected behaviour for a mac application.

Edit: But you're right it's quite a nice interface.

randomtask··on Coding Horror: Has The Virtualization Future Arrived?
"The original system requirements for Windows XP are almost comically low".

randomtask··on The Portuguese Experiment: Did Drug Decriminalization Work?
I don't think having an opinion should preclude anyone from producing these kind of reports or reduce their persuasiveness. Personally I'd prefer to read a report from an organisation, such as the CATO institute whose political opinions are well known to me, than an "independent" government commission. At least then I know where they stand.
randomtask··on The Portuguese Experiment: Did Drug Decriminalization Work?
How about "Effect of decriminalizing drugs in Portugal - stats included"?

Don't take my comment personally. The title Time gave the article is misleading too especially since they later on quote someone who calls it decriminalization.

randomtask··on The Portuguese Experiment: Did Drug Decriminalization Work?
The title is wrong. Portugal hasn't legalised drugs, but rather decriminalised possession for personal use. In effect they have the same laws, but whereas users could be sent to prison before they will now instead be assessed and treated by the state. Proper legalisation would remove all consequences of drug use, rather than just reducing penalties. To argue that this proves any arguments for or against legalisation is wrong in my opinion.
randomtask··on Ask HN: Effective arguments to convince someone to get on Twitter?
I'm not convinced. Those links don't seem all that useful, to me at least.

On the other hand googling for "packing for long term travel" (minus the quotes) gave me:

http://www.vagabondish.com/practical-guide-long-term-travel-... http://eurosatemydollars.com/trip-planning/packing-and-gear/ http://travelindependent.info/whattopack.htm

Those links seem more comprehensive to me.

randomtask··on Tunneling traffic through DNS, a.k.a free internet in cafes/airports
Generally though wireless hotspots allow DNS traffic out (the DNS server isn't filtered) but not ICMP. In fact if anything is filtered it tends to be ICMP. I'm not really aware of any situations where ICMP tunnelling is useful. Anyone know of any?
randomtask··on Gordon Ramsay could teach software engineers a thing or two?
Labelling Ramsay as "the guy that yells at people to motivate them" is really doing him a disservice I think. Yes he shouts at people, but that's usually when they aren't pulling their weight in the kitchen, or are being stubborn while their business is clearly suffering. The show is, surprisingly enough, about more than him yelling, though admittedly that is fun to watch ;)

Ramsay's philosophy is basically the same as PG's "make something people want". He really is very good at devising menus that do just that and promoting them (though arguably his celebrity status helps a little there). The restaurant owners that he "rescues" all seem to be eerily like that guy who wrote the article about how opening a cafe was his lifelong ambition, but it ruined his life, because he was too caught up in living the dream to run it as a business.

I really enjoy his show and I really respect his pragmatism, focus, and love for what he does. It's a pleasure to watch. If you haven't seen it definitely check it out.

randomtask··on Ask HN: What time tracking and billing software (or related solutions) do you recommend?
That sounds perfect. Although they offer a download and also have an option to pay seemingly with no explanation whether the free version is crippled somehow? I'm not currently near a Mac so I can't check what the difference is between them.
randomtask··on Ask HN: What time tracking and billing software (or related solutions) do you recommend?
Will definitely check it out. Cheers.
randomtask··on Ask HN: What time tracking and billing software (or related solutions) do you recommend?
I'll check it out for future reference. At the moment though I'm quite bootleg and need something cheap and cheerful.
randomtask··on Ask HN: What time tracking and billing software (or related solutions) do you recommend?
Thanks. So far so good.
randomtask··on Ask HN: What time tracking and billing software (or related solutions) do you recommend?
That's quite cool. I'm not an emacs user, but I'll definitely consider switching to that OS at some stage ;)
randomtask··on Ask HN: What time tracking and billing software (or related solutions) do you recommend?
Good suggestion. Thanks!
