randompwd··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
It's very telling that you don't address an issue and just allude to implied wrongness. Hope you're a fan of irony.
randompwd··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
> I live in Canada as an immigrant

> I've often thought of leaving Canada due to this shit, I live on unceded native territory for fuck's sake.

And where would you go exactly?

Given every country has a history, I feel like declaring your intention to leave is hyperbolic. What country is your homeland?

randompwd··on Amazon Prime Day Is Dystopian
Amazon UK (despite being the primary & default Amazon outlet for Republic of Ireland customers for the past decade) managed to mess up the 2021 Prime day sales for ROI customers, overcharging them & then refusing to look in to it until a national paper called them out.

randompwd··on Apple makes its case against iPhone app sideloading
What an unnecessarily trite comment.

Have you any comment on the actual article or the arguments contained within?

randompwd··on Millions of new items in Amazon warehouse marked 'destroy'
The original source was already posted today with comments. thejournal.ie doesn't add any new information and just rehashes someone elses reporting (which is par for course with them)

Wow, not even allowed view homepage if you're using VPN.

edit: turns out they do allow VPN IPs. They just don't allow any connection from Europe (VPN or private residential)

Good job team! /s

randompwd··on Boring Problems Need Attention Too
> "tiger-lillies--what": G docs 1 word vs OpenOffice 2 words (IDK what this should "really" be)

i think 3 words. The tiger lily is a type of lily. plural is tiger lillies. Fair to say hypen is stylistic (& after a quick web search , I can't find any other usage like that).

That aside, I can't believe how simplistic Google Docs word recognition/count engine is.

randompwd··on Cristiano Ronaldo snub wipes billions off Coca-Cola’s market value

randompwd··on Survey shows people no longer believe working hard will lead to a better life
> It makes my shoulders ache, just watching them

??

Are they not using wheelie bins with trucks that do the lifting? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUA_gB5SuPc These have been the norm in West Europe for easily a decade plus.

randompwd··on Stripe Identity
The only way to verify an identity is to call out to the identity issuer and confirm the details and pics on the id.

A fake ID is still a fake ID. Just because it passes a looks-similar test doesn't mean it's being verified.

verify > verb > make sure or demonstrate that (something) is true, accurate, or justified.

If it's not confirmed by issuer(in person or programmatically), it can never be 100% thus can never be verified.

randompwd··on As religious faith has declined, ideological intensity has risen
Just googled Kristina Keneally. You're living out very relevant info.

Born to and raised by Australian mother. Then married Australian man before moving to Australia.

I think the blood and subsequent marriage connection helped immensely in how she is viewed. I think that would be the same for most other Euro nations. At least one parent of the land along with partner from the land and residing in the land for 30+ years.

randompwd··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
My guess would be more the available source rather than the website itself. I think it's fair to say somebody who interned at a place would have had things explained to them and had access to internal design docs which the intern themselves wouldnt necessarily have figured out if working from scratch.

I find it very bizarre for an intern to do this.

randompwd··on The Cost of Being an ‘Interchangeable Asian’
> she wasn’t being recognized for her contributions, which included testing games and founding the company’s diversity committee.

How much of a contribution are these things really? If testing games is your job, how is this a contribution beyond what you're already getting paid for? There's a limit to how much of a contribution 1 test engineer can make. As for the diversity committee, what results did the committee achieve to make things objectively better for company and workers?

Also, the first sentence and photo caption refer to Lau as game developer but her LinkedIn bio doesnt mention game dev.

It seems the article is elevating her position to make a harder hitting piece which is ingenuous.

randompwd··on A former Tesla employee posts stories about IT there
you've been active on here since 2011. how do you not know the rules by now? put a 2018 in the title. this should be obvious.

randompwd··on Once a bastion of free speech, the ACLU faces an identity crisis
https://www.nytimes.com/article/breonna-taylor-police.html:

> While the department had received court approval for a “no-knock” entry, the orders were changed before the raid to “knock and announce,” meaning that the police had to identify themselves.

> The officers have said they did announce themselves, but Mr. Walker said he did not hear anything.

Amazing how in 2021, with an abundant of factually checked information available, some HN commenters can use the internet to write a comment, but cannot use the internet to fact check their assertions before posting.

randompwd··on Photographer Sues Capcom for $12M for Using Her Photos in Video Games
I think we need to change laws about photographic ownership.

The photographer did not create any of these textures yet they're able to limit the use of said textures. Broken system.

These laws made sense when photography was an expensive-ish investment. They don't make sense now.

randompwd··on Medium sees employee exits after CEO publishes ‘culture memo’

randompwd··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
7 billion people in the world. I don't think the global lead on diversity strategy role should be going to someone who wrote an elaborate essay in which he was clearly anti-Semitic. He graduated university in 1994 - it's not like he was a kid when he was writing these words.

Who else has he helped discriminate against based on their ethnicity or views?

randompwd··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
Are you the head of diversity? If no, then it doesn't matters. You won't have outsized power and influence.

Kind of hard to claim diversity matters when you install a demonstrable racist at the top.

Who else is he discriminating against that we just haven't found yet?

randompwd··on Penthouses and poor doors: how Europe's 'biggest regeneration project' fell flat
That's not the case. The only people being subsidised in any way, shape or form are the affordable housing people.

FTA:

> They stress that the affordable housing blocks are managed by Peabody and Optivo, which “had the option to choose which facilities they wanted to buy into for their residents”.

> Spokespeople for Peabody, Optivo and L&Q all say that it is never their intention to make any community feel excluded, and that their policies do not include access to the private amenities in order to keep the service charges to a minimum.

randompwd··on Homeless Oaklanders were tired of the housing crisis. So they built a village
Simple solution is enforce the law.Remove the housing and charge those who build or assist in building on public land with a criminal offense - same as would happen to anyone else who illegally builds on public lands.

It's past ridiculous that this behaviour is applauded and endorsed by elected officials.

randompwd··on Germany agrees to pay Namibia €1.1bn over historical Herero-Nama genocide
Plenty of non Western countries engaged in genocide. They just didn't keep a record of it.
randompwd··on Life after an internet mob attack
> Why post images of tweets rather than link to the source?

Because at least one of those users had already deleted their twitter account.

Because if any other of the users delete their accounts, the tweets will disappear too.

There's nothing strange about posting an inline image of something.

> Seems like cherry-picking out parts of a conversation to me

?? It is a) better than not providing proof like the accusers failed to provide and b) those same accusers can post their own proof if it's contradictory.

randompwd··on Life after an internet mob attack
Linked receipts seem to be exactly that - receipts. I don't see what the confusion is.
randompwd··on Life after an internet mob attack
wow, although some of those false accusers deleted their twitter account - it's great to see the "Design advocacy @google" still active on Twitter and still employed by Google?

Hopefully they can pop on here and tell us why they behaved like such a horrible human? or how they think their job search will go - i wouldn't feel safe working with someone like that - false accusations on a public platform against someone who was already being falsely accused.
