randomString1··on Ciao, Chrome: Firefox Quantum Is the Browser Built for 2017
I agree. Here's my setup for standalone/isolated profiles if it's any help:

    "firefox.exe" -no-remote -fullscreen -P "spotify-profile" -url "https://open.spotify.com"
and user_pref("taskbar.grouping.useprofile", true) so that I get separate icons in my taskbar for each profile

randomString1··on An Update on Firefox Containers
I still think multiple profiles are a better choice. My main profile never keeps cookies and have a very rigid https://github.com/pyllyukko/user.js file and only a couple of extensions. I'm very scared about extensions and self-updating scripts so I only keep them isolated. It also helps with organization since I have different bookmarks. I can also "firewall" that profile to never accidentally load websites I don't want to.

If needed you can drag windows/tabs between profiles or even other browsers. I disabled all the referral options too.

randomString1··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
Cancelled cable years ago. Just cancelled Netflix today, won't be paying any service anymore and I will reassess the situation in 3 years. If you want me to tolerate your DRM (and many other problems like region blocks) the whole industry needs to rethink their approach. U+1F44F
randomString1··on Ask HN: What's the most absurd A/B test result you've seen?
Brand recognition by repetition? Even if the brands themselves aren't buying ads, maybe there's a bigger chance that in the future you'll feel more comfortable buying that item again. So it's better for Amazon too.
randomString1··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is out of beta
Regarding security, it increases attack surface but besides that is there any critical issues?
randomString1··on Is it safe to keep Bluetooth always enabled in my smartphone?
That's what worries me. I want to keep a smartwatch paired with my phone all the time so I can get silent notifications.
randomString1··on MS Paint is here to stay
A few examples that you can't normally uninstall are Cortana (" Windows Search "), Camera, Alarms/Clock, Email/Calendar, Movies/TV, Pictures, Photos, 3D, Voice recorder, Groove Music, Maps, Messages, One Note, Paint 3D, People, Sticky Notes, Xbox, Xbox Game Speech.

You can certainly remove some of them manually or using 3rd party solutions but something eventually goes wrong specially after an update. I mean I can remove most of the executables from the Windows folder, my point is that it's going to break something eventually. Removing Cortana and SearchUI used to work before AU, now it just freezes my start menu completely.

> On the other hand, rather than continuing to bundle software almost noone uses, they move it to an accessible place for people who want it.

You mean like the 20 UWP apps that I can't uninstall because they made everything intertwined on purpose? Don't bother trying to link some random PowerShell/GPO/registry hacks because I know about all of them. It always breaks something (varying from release to release)

> What more do you want from them?

No ads and invasive telemetry

randomString1··on The New Firefox and Ridiculous Numbers of Tabs
I find way more productive to use bookmarks

- Archive folder: bookmark dump to keep the links just in case I ever need it again (so they pop on the search bar even after I clean my history, you can also add keywords manually if you want)

- Buffer folder: to-dos, reminders and things I <need> to read soon™. I keep it at a maximum of 10 items at all times

- Follow up folders (plural): pages I want to check ocasionally for updates. Often used for pages without RSS. I don't like to use extensions to check for page modification because I want to do it on my own pace. This helps reducing my mental load because I know it's there if I ever need it. I often delete the entire folder if I don't feel it's useful anymore.

- The rest are folders divided by a main folder and subject. This way I can easily delete them after I'm done with that task (after a minute or after a year). Example: Programming > Project X, Programming > CSS fix for that thing.

Middle click on the folder to open everything at once. Done.

The position of the folders are crucial and also helps with muscle memory. I keep it like this: the more to the right (of the browser), the more disposable they are.
