randomNumber7··on The bread paradox: why convenience always wins, and why SaaS isn't doomed
Yet I bake my own bread because the "bread" you can buy isn't bread.

Its not a smart calculation to poison yourself and live shorter just because it is convenient and less work in the short term.

If anything the bread paradox should describe that it is very easy to fool 90% of the population. Eat shit and then inject ozempic. Double win... for the industry

randomNumber7··on International chess federation sanctions Kramnik
A lot of people try to get good at chess. If someone manages to become world class he is likely very intelligent.
randomNumber7··on 30-year sentence for transporting zines is a five-alarm fire for free speech
The state has a monopoly on all kinds of violence you listed. If it wouldn't you would either end up in civil war or a failed state with local warlords.
randomNumber7··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
Also LLMs are mainly used for work and if you can spend 6 digits on watches your likely financially independent.
randomNumber7··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
Most people can't afford 6 digits for hardware that deprecates in a couple of years.
randomNumber7··on Gemma 4 12B: A unified, encoder-free multimodal model
> Novel unified architecture: No multimodal encoders. The vision and audio inputs flow directly into the LLM backbone.

I would be interested in how this actually works. I couldn't find a description of the model architecture (and I did check the links in the Google blog)

randomNumber7··on CQL: Categorical Databases
SQL is not an imperative programming language.
randomNumber7··on CQL: Categorical Databases
Since Codd's paper showed that the relational model dominates other approaches (for data storage) I would expect a paper that shows categorical database are not affected by this and what benefit they have.
randomNumber7··on Claude Opus 4.8
Tell me you never had a crazy thought and you are either a lier or a psychopath.
randomNumber7··on The Problem with the Ferrari Luce EV Offers a Lesson for Every Leader
"Know your place" is what came to my mind when I looked at this.

I get that they think about going away from the combustion engine, but as a manufacturer of insanely expensive, loud and overpowerd sports car this doesn't make sense.

It's like if I as a software dev would be worried about the future market and suddenly advertise myself as a psychologist in search for clients.

randomNumber7··on C array types are weird
It was always only a suggestion to the compiler, to hold this variable in a register.

Compilers got so good at optimization that there is little point using it.

If a variable is held in a register you can't access it with a pointer. So if your intention is it should be in a register you can't take the address.

randomNumber7··on A successful Japanese trial of a ramjet engine designed for Mach‑5 aircraft
It can be nuclear powered, so you don't have CO2 emmisions /S

You just need to add heat to the air at the point where the diameter is the lowest.

The russians are maybe using this idea for one of their new cruise missles named Burevestnik, although for them the nuclear emmisions are likely a positive side effect.

randomNumber7··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
Owning 500g is enough to get someone hanged. A proof of trafficking or selling is not necessary.

It is exactly as I said. Please don't spread misinformation.

randomNumber7··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
Singapore also hangs people for possessing weed.
randomNumber7··on The fun has been optimized out of the Internet
Definitely the fish stinks from the head.

I'm also a bit confused about how the people on the top think this will play out.

A long time ago there was a french saying "noblesse oblige", or the german pendant "Wohlstand verpflichtet".

randomNumber7··on The fun has been optimized out of the Internet
I still enjoy the things that are not overtaken by big tech (although it isn't much). Anna's archive and streaming niche movies.

I miss the old forums the most. The group mind on Reddit is just regression to the mean.

The rest I tried to cut back as much as possible for my own mental health.

I can't get of YouTube completly even though most of the time I hate myself after doom scrolling. Sometimes I still find genuinely interesting stuff there.

randomNumber7··on Men who stare at walls
This is something I want to try. Does the time where the mind stays in the present before it strays away increase when you practice this?
randomNumber7··on Butterflies are in decline across North America, a look at the Western Monarch
Lasers controlled by AI computer vision?
randomNumber7··on DeepSeek v4
Both can be totalitarian. Both are shit imho. I just don't buy the argument that China is worse because of it.

But if we start nitpicking the US also executes people all over the world without trial and has secret prisons worldwide where they put people (guess what) without trial.

randomNumber7··on DeepSeek v4
The USA has one of the highest percentages of their population in prison.

Even for minor stuff like beeing addicted to drugs.

Looks pretty totalitarian to me.

randomNumber7··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
I remember New Year's Eve in 2000. It felt like people really believed in a better future and they looked forward to experience the new millenium.

In retrospective this looks like a depressing joke to me.

randomNumber7··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
Money should only have the purpose of realizing ones goals, it has no purpose in itself.

The whole society has lost its goal when the only target is to maximize money.

randomNumber7··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
Children spend an insane amount of time in school yet it has little results.

One overlooked problem is imo that you can't just waste their time with nonsense and get good results.

A lot of people in the education system are so full of shit that they believe it's good for children to sit there the whole day.

Improving exercises and lectures should be a priority.

randomNumber7··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
I'm pretty sure most companies optimize for what the consumers actually want.
randomNumber7··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
I recently swapped a broken display + the battery of a smartphone. It's definitely possible with recent devices (although apple might be different).

You need some skill and patience to cut it open etc. without damage, so most people should probably go to a repair shop.

randomNumber7··on Anna's Archive loses $322M Spotify piracy case without a fight
> Now the mega-corporations decided to kill off Anna's Archive.

You can still torrent the books from library genesis if they succeed. It would be a bit of an effort, but free books are currently the only positive thing (for me) in the internet.

randomNumber7··on Anna's Archive loses $322M Spotify piracy case without a fight
It's even more absurd now when the big AI companies train their LLMs on torrented books.
randomNumber7··on Want to write a compiler? Just read these two papers (2008)
Imho the problem is the fixation on parser generators and BNF. It's just a lot easier to write a recursive descent parser than to figure out the correct BNF for anything other than a toy language with horrible syntax.
randomNumber7··on How NASA built Artemis II’s fault-tolerant computer
The average coder in the 1970s was a lot smarter than today. Think about the people who would be interested to start a career in this field at that time.
randomNumber7··on How NASA built Artemis II’s fault-tolerant computer
They know their developers and engineers suck almost as hard as their management decisions so they added some more redundancy.
