random42_··on Matias RGB Backlit Wired Aluminum Keyboard for Mac
I had the same questions before I got a mechanical keyboard without the F row and an ESC key but I got around that pretty quickly. Using the number row with the Fn key for the functions is not bad and I was able to remap the CAPS LOCK key to be my ESC. Works pretty well for me and I was back to pre-mk productivity levels in a short time.
random42_··on Japan Begins Experiment of Opening to Immigration
Did you actually had to give up on your Japanese citizenship? I know that when taking the oath you reject all other citizenship you may have but AFAIK this is not enforced, meaning you don't have to go to your embassy and formally require to give up on your citizenship. Really curious to know more about this.

(1) You don't need to have a degree to apply for an H1B as long as you can prove 3 years of experience to each year of college. So, if you are a developer with 12 years of experience that makes up for the lack of a 4-years degree. You can also combine years of college with experience to complete that requirement. Say, 2 years of college plus 6 years of experience.

(2) the salary must follow the prevailing wages in the area the employee is gonna work. That's not really an absurd thing specially considering that the market rates are usually higher than the prevailing wages.

(3) what I have seen about this point is that companies will usually find a way around that if they're really willing to hire you. Either work remotely as a contractor until the visa is stamped and you can move or something else. It's hard but not impossible.

(4) is really up to chance and I've had friends who were and were not selected.

I'd say it's hard but no miracles needed.

random42_··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
You are correct. US Congress (most of the time) legislate in favor of whoever pays more.
random42_··on H-1B: Outsourcer HCL games visa system to discriminate against non-South Asians
That guy specifically was transfered and had plans to stay. He actually brought his wife and newborn daughter some time later but was still living in a shared home (not the same with 8 other people, but still).
random42_··on H-1B: Outsourcer HCL games visa system to discriminate against non-South Asians
In the US, a company I worked for hired TCS to provide developers and QA to our project. Most of them were offshore in India but a few moved to the US because we needed people on site.

I feel really sorry for them. One of the project managers lived in a rented bedroom of another Indian family with his wife and daughter because he couldn't afford a place of his own. Another guy, single, lived in a shared 2BR house with 8 other people for the same reason. And there were more people in the same situation.

This was in NY where housing is not cheap but either way, the way I see it they were being exploited. Probably should blame the company I was working for as well, or perhaps just the VP that pushed to replace Infosys with Tata because he had a history with them and they were cheaper.

Edit: typo

random42_··on Handbrewing Coffee
Funny that my entire life that's been the only way I would drink coffee. My parents would make it that way and I was doing it that way when I started drinking coffee. I guess that the fact that electric coffee makers were not popular nor cheap at the time contributed to this habit.

Besides, you can tell me what you want but I think the coffee from an electric coffee maker tastes worse than hand brewing. Perhaps I've only used cheap coffee makers, but I'm yet to find one that can make a drinkable coffee. Exceptions are espresso makers;the ones I tried made really good coffee (including the one I currently have at home).

random42_··on Do you guys miss real books? (2014)
Guess the risks are the same in the end.
random42_··on Do you guys miss real books? (2014)
I used to love physical books and the feel and the smell and the looks. Until the day I moved overseas and couldn't take my collection with me. I left them stored in boxes at friend's house and one day, during a storm, his house was flooded and my books were destroyed like most of his stuff.

Today I love my Kindle and I like the peace of mind that my books are safe.

random42_··on Ask HN: What’s your laptop?
Lenovo Yoga 900 that I've bought in 2016. It's running Fedora since day one and I only had two issues with it: - Wifi driver didn't work with the Fedora version I was using but I fixed it by using next version's beta. - using it with an external monitor with resolution different than the native display (4k) was an issue because of X. It worked, but the external monitor (1080) had a crappy resolution. Once Fedora started using Wayland, problem was solved.

In comparison, the MBP that I have to use at work is a nice piece of junk. Can barely handle 2 external monitors and had to be replaced twice because of filesystem encryption being corrupted.

random42_··on Praying mantis seen hunting for fish in wild for first time
Yes, and it is noted in the article: Praying mantises have occasionally been observed to feed on vertebrates, including small birds, lizards, frogs, newts, mice, snakes and turtles.

But many of these cases have either not been scientifically validated or have occurred under human-manipulated circumstances. And there is no previous scientific data of mantises preying on fish.

random42_··on Apple says it’s tracking your calls and emails to ‘prevent fraud’
There is a setting on the Phone app just for Caller ID and Spam and you even have the ability to filter spam calls. I don't have Google Voice so I don't know if/how it works.
random42_··on Apple says it’s tracking your calls and emails to ‘prevent fraud’
I've been pretty happy with the way Android is handling spammers. Not only it shows when a call is suspected to be spam, it also gives me the opportunity to flag a caller as such.

random42_··on Goodbye Microservices: From 100s of problem children to 1 superstar
Been there. OTOH, my last job was at a startup that used a LAMP stack but made enough money to be self-sufficient and not depend on VC money to keep running.

When the legacy systems started to hurt us (because they were written by the founder in a couple of weeks in the most hacky way), we decided against microservices and went to improve the actual code into something more performing and more maintenable, also moving from PHP5 to PHP7.

As much as we all wanted to go microservices and follow the buzz, we were rational enough to see that it didn't make any sense in our case.

random42_··on Ask HN: What's the best documentation you've ever read?
Probably the Gentoo Linux documentation. Not sure how it looks like today, but back in 2005 when I started using Gentoo it helped me a lot because not only was comprehensive but also deep enough albeit clear.

random42_··on Operation Serenata de Amor – An AI project to analyze public spending in Brazil
It's an interesting fact--anecdotally, of course--that as much as they complain about the country, they won't let anyone from outside to do the same thing.
random42_··on Operation Serenata de Amor – An AI project to analyze public spending in Brazil
Like the others already explained, "vira-latas" is a portuguese term for a stray dog and the idea that they need to flip trash cans to try to find food.

However, there is also an expression (whose origin was also explained) that means "Mongrel complex (Complexo de vira-Lata in Portuguese), which is an expression used to refer to a collective inferiority complex felt by some Brazilian people in comparison to Europe or the United States."[0]

Contrary to what was said here, the term coined by Nelson Rodrigues was not exclusive related to soccer. According to him: "By "Mongrel Complex" I mean the inferiority in which Brazilians put themselves, voluntarily, in comparison to the rest of the world. Brazilians are the reverse Narcissus, who spit in their own image. Here is the truth: we can't find personal or historical pretexts for self-esteem."[0]

How does Linode compares to DigitalOcean? I see that at least price wise DigitalOcean looks cheaper.

I would not forget to mention the owners of these projects who handed the projects over to Kite. I think they are in the wrong as much as Kite.
random42_··on Are You Ready to Consider That Capitalism Is the Real Problem?
I wonder how much of it is the system's fault and how much is human nature's fault. Regardless of the system, there is always a group that will want more, be it money and/or power. Many of the problems cited in this article wouldn't be a problem if not for pure self interest and lack of empathy for the society as a whole. The JP Morgan reaction to the attempt of raising wages is the perfect example for that.
