randogogogo··on It's A-Me, HTML Mario
Maybe I shouldn't have voted this up. :/
randogogogo··on Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs
I guess I'm not old enough to have thought through this already, but it was explained to me early on in my career that 401k plans should be divested slowly as one approaches the end of their career. Is this atypical compared to how it actually works in reality?
randogogogo··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
This times one-thousand. I'm surprised your infant child was not required to take a drug test first. j/k
randogogogo··on Some doubts about human-centered design
I see this author making a lot of strong cases against unethical business practices where human center design is involved, but it doesn't make the case well enough that human centered design itself is harmful. If anything it makes the case that vanilla anthropocentrism is. Am I missing a stronger connection?
randogogogo··on Intel to Launch Core I9-9900KS Next Month: 5 GHz on All Cores
This marketing feels a lot like the days of the Pentium 4 and the NetBurst architecture.
randogogogo··on Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs
This short explanation put the reasoning behind this in the best context for me, but makes me wonder more about the dissimilarities.

Are there other factors like in the housing market of a decade+ ago? Is there a lot of risk for Joe Six-Pack? Are there people out there borrowing money from banks with poor underwriting practices getting into index funds when they should not be doing so?

I'd think if this is most peoples' 401k and surplus income at risk that there may be a huge market correction but it won't devastate the economy. If people take the long term view and if investors sit tight and wait for the cycle to move into recovery again they'll be OK. If however they need to live off returns on their investments in the present (like homeowners needed a place to live during the crash) then they're in trouble.

randogogogo··on Parents Thought They Wanted Tech in Every Classroom, Now They’re Not So Sure
Huh, that's an interesting idea. I'll to ask my kids about this kind of sharing this afternoon.
randogogogo··on Parents Thought They Wanted Tech in Every Classroom, Now They’re Not So Sure
I'd pile on to this sentiment with noticing that many kids who do read these days are not progression past YA fiction in their discretionary reading options.
randogogogo··on Parents Thought They Wanted Tech in Every Classroom, Now They’re Not So Sure
I cannot speak to motives behind the move but my experience has also been that administration has driven this.

My kids schools are 100% Chromebooks. This has been great for scheduling extracurricular activities and making their backpacks lighter. It really hasn't improved their ability to learn mathematics or English.

Is anyone else seeing OpenDNS security warnings on the headlone link to the site?
randogogogo··on Rich Families Are Legally Separating from Their Kids to Pay Less for College
"Charge infinity for college" is the best way I've heard this put. If there is no pressure on a school to control costs then nothing will control costs.
randogogogo··on A man who destroyed his multimillion dollar company in 10 seconds (2018)
She's joked on Twitter when people don't know who she is that her name has appeared in something like 400 songs.
randogogogo··on Western officials say Chinese agents contact foreign citizens using LinkedIn
This didn't really strike me as a very profound story. I'm sure in a bygone era newspaper classifieds would have been used instead.
randogogogo··on Katy Perry's Dark Horse Lawsuit Makes Waves in Music Industry
I'm not really familiar with either song, but I do think it could be a coincidence. From a Music Theory perspective, they both appear to be in the key C (suddenly we're down to eight notes) and both in 4/4 time. Unfortunately the changes (chord progressions) aren't there but if this rests on melodic similarities then it's not hard for there to be similarities.

randogogogo··on Iceland tire of tourists trashing their nature
I was just there a couple weeks ago. The only incident I saw of this was a recently married couple taking photo's on a cliff, they went out over the ropes, a misstep probably would have killed them.

Also when you rent a car there, they inform you that going off road is prohibited. I guess some people choose not to listen.

randogogogo··on 2.7M Americans Still Get Netflix DVDs in the Mail
Been a customer of this for years now. It's great for getting old things not available from streaming, or more commonly way over priced on streaming.
randogogogo··on As McKinsey Sells Advice, Its Hedge Fund May Have a Stake in the Outcome
The perception alone matters to clients, that's enough to take action let alone potential insider trading type ethical issues. I work at a firm doing a lot of M&A work and Chinese walls are a big deal to alot of our clients in that space. Also we're a smaller firm and able to manage confidential projects, I'd think McKinsey of all people could figure out how to do this.
randogogogo··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
Thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to check it out.
randogogogo··on AMA: NY AG Schneiderman on net neutrality and protecting our voice in government
This is exactly the way it was until W's FCC changed it removing wholesale line sharing regulations by declaring ISPs information services.

randogogogo··on The citizens of Detroit are building their own Internet
I was a Speakeasy DSL customer in the late 90s. They were great, IIRC it was the line sharing deregulation was what did me in as a customer. They got priced out. We hosted our own Q3A server on that connection. So many happy memories.
