Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.

randmeerkat··on Apple introduces iPad mini built for Apple Intelligence
>…addicted to their phones by making Watch support exclusive to iPhone.

Buy a Garmin watch, battery life measured in weeks, and you’ll never have to re-enter your pin again because it moved on your wrist. You’ll still get great fitness tracking though and also notifications if you choose to sync them.

> If you think that "VI is a superior editor than Emacs", I'm afraid you still have a shallow understanding of both.

Thank you for your long and thoughtful prose, so fitting for an emacs user. One day, when you value productivity, might I suggest VI.

randmeerkat··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
> Strategically thinking, after setting the shredder on fire it will be harder to shred the code of the future emacs clones! :D

The most realistic future is that emacs begins shipping with a self-shredding feature. C-h s

randmeerkat··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
Realize that VI was the superior editor, give up on the endeavor, print out the code I had already written for emacs, shred it, then set the shredder unceremoniously on fire.

For those that downvote me, worth it.

randmeerkat··on Nintendo isn't just attacking emulators [video]
> They have some of the most recognisable IP in gaming (and with Pokemon etc, one of the most recognisable bits of IP in the world), so they have the market power to pull people to buy their hardware too.

I haven’t picked up my Switch since I bought my Steam Deck. That’s not “market power” that’s losing a gamer instead.

randmeerkat··on Nintendo isn't just attacking emulators [video]
> Nintendo currently rent out NES games as part of Switch online

If Nintendo really cared about this they should create their own version of Spotify for legacy video games and charge a monthly subscription fee for the entire library that’s cross platform and mobile friendly. The strength of Nintendo really is their games, not the hardware. I don’t understand why Nintendo is so attached to their hardware in 2024, especially in the age of the Steam Deck.

> That's kind of the opposite of the Hacker ethos

HN revolves around YComb and finding ideas that make great products. Someone has come up with a brilliant solution and someone else is saying they want to buy it. HN isn’t about “hacker” purity, it’s about thinking through cool ideas and maybe finding a startup along the way.

randmeerkat··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
> What do you mean by that? Due to geopolitics? Or at a technical level of the current law?

Geopolitics, but the technical level of law certainly plays a part. Europe had no idea what the effect of leveling lawsuits against a fortune one company would yield. However the EU has proven rather adept at identifying technological practices harming consumers and a strong capacity for rectifying them. Now that the EU is beginning to find its stride, I expect it to become more assertive in how international commerce is conducted.

> Until these fines become meaningful, companies will just continue breaking the law and asking for forgiveness later, as the changes to their market cap can offset this fine in hours.

Up until recent years the EU didn’t even know if it could take action against U.S. based tech giants. Now that the EU has established wins in fines, usb-c, user replaceable batteries, and alternate app stores, I expect EU regulators to take even bolder action.

User replaceable cell phone batteries used to be the norm, not the exception.

It’s coming, the EU brought the USB-C port to the iPhone and in 2027 it brings user replaceable batteries too. [1]

> apple isnt building to impress internet neckbeards like us. they are building for the normies. features they understand intuitively and cannot fuck up. maybe wait til it gets in the normies hands to judge.

Apple has lost its way, just look at how the "normies" and the "neckbeards" responded to the Vision Pro. Apple doesn't know how to innovate anymore, just how to market, and mass produce things, which is honestly good enough to keep making money for now.

randmeerkat··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
> I'd be extremely happy to be wrong, as I invest my life and my family's in the US.

Spend less time reading the news and more time enjoying your family. The world has been “ending” for decades now, the U.S. isn’t going anywhere and will continue to get some things right while getting other things wrong.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

~ Nick Fury

randmeerkat··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
> I'm curious about such questions because on a larger scheme of the things, I really hope that Boeing is not a miniature reflection of the US - an empire in its twilight that got entangled in irreconcilable interests, doomed to watch its own inevitable decline.

I’m tired of this hyperbolic, melodramatic angst about the general decline of the U.S. Did you not read the part about the crew being returned by SpaceX? A company that just made landing rockets a reality only 9 years ago, not even 10 years has passed and reusable rockets are as boring as smartphones. NASA identified an issue on the Boeing Starliner, and a cutting edge company (SpaceX) stepped up for a non-emergency rescue mission. There was no loss of life, or equipment, there’s been no injuries, just mild inconveniences. This isn’t a nation in decline, this is a nation that has even begun to peak yet.
