ramshanker··on The thrill of AI is fading – and Wall Street is getting clear-eyed about value
AI shoot to fame with Generative images and Text generation. Found many use cases. For me personally, I have to read a lot less documentation now to Code stuffs.

Apparently emergence of new use-cases is pretty thin. I see many domain specific opportunities, where AI can help. It will take some time to develop software where AI can be purchased and activated for niche company-internal use cases. Till that happens, AI (Neural Network training etc.) are hard core software development problem. Not usable by most of the companies.

ramshanker··on The slow evaporation of the free/open source surplus
Here is the one core aspect about open source. There are people who really want to open source code without expectations of money at all. Immaterial if users are corporate or not. Perhaps for love of the art, career building or even just prestige and so many myriad motivations. I respect their choice. And it's not a shitty arrangement from their p perspective at all.
ramshanker··on Fixing a bug in Google Chrome as a first-time contributor
Excellent. One small question If anyone can answer. When an outside contributor is submitting a fix like these, do open source software maintainers ask for test also to be written? Fix itself is worth acceptance. What if contributor don't have any more time/interest beyond submitting the fix.
ramshanker··on Removing stuff is never obvious yet often better
>>> I'm a big fan of "contact us for pricing." <<<

I have opposite feeling about them. They are like open invitation to give the sales guy a window of opportunity to look up your company website, and markup the price accordingly.

The old saying....Some variation of.... If you fire your bottom 10%, your top 10% will also leave.
ramshanker··on Praise My GitHub Profile
And the roast one (https://github-roast.pages.dev/) is even better.

Ram Shanker, a civil and structural engineer dabbling in computer science? That’s like a doctor trying to fix your car. With a grand total of three followers, it's clear your GitHub presence is as lively as a graveyard. Six public repos, and not a single one sporting a respectable number of stars? Your "Educational, Free, Factory Engineering Software" has fewer fans than a forgotten sitcom. And for someone who tags themselves as an "amateur," it's safe to say you're really nailing the part where no one can spot your talent. Forking zlib might be your idea of "innovative," but let’s be real: it’s the equivalent of copying homework and still flunking the class. You have a barebone chat application, but the only thing it’s chatting about is how nobody wants to talk to you. Maybe stick to buildings, because your code sure isn't winning any architectural awards.

ramshanker··on Praise My GitHub Profile
That was too good.

ramshankerji

Ram Shanker, I am thrilled to see your GitHub profile shining with potential! As a Civil & Structural Engineer by profession and a computer science amateur, you're already demonstrating remarkable versatility. Your ability to balance two distinct fields is truly commendable.

Your projects showcase a wide range of skills, from C++ to Python, and from educational software to digital signing certificates. Each project represents a new challenge, a new learning opportunity, and a new chance to grow. Don't be discouraged by the number of stars or followers - these are just numbers. What truly matters is the passion and dedication you've invested in each project.

I particularly love the diversity of your projects. From creating educational software (Vishwakarma) to solving puzzles (PonderThis), you're exploring different aspects of computer science and having fun while doing it! Your Chat project, although barebone, has the potential to become a powerful tool for office networks. And let's not forget about your participation in course.fast.ai 2022 part 2 - that's a great way to stay updated with the latest developments in AI.

Remember, Ram Shanker, every contribution you make to the open-source community is valuable. Your work might inspire others, or it might solve a real-world problem. Either way, you should be incredibly proud of yourself for taking the first step and sharing your projects with the world. Keep pushing boundaries, learning, and growing - the tech community needs more enthusiasts like you!

Lastly, don't worry about having only 3 followers (yet!). Focus on creating high-quality content, engaging with others, and continuously improving your craft. The followers will come naturally as people recognize your talent and dedication.

Keep shining, Ram Shanker!

ramshanker··on Open-Sora does pretty good video generation on consumer GPUs
Take down their GIT Repository with perfectly valid DMCA Notice, I guess?
ramshanker··on MeshAnything – Converts 3D representations into efficient 3D meshes
I am all in for any development in this domain. Just to spread some sense of scale, We recently processed (manually) the point cloud scan of one of the (<1% of whole complex) working Oil Refinery. The total volume of point cloud was 450GByte. Our previous project of slightly larger scope was 2.1TByte.

So the scale shown in this paper feels like toys! Not undermining the effort at all. We need to start somewhere anyway.

For the same reason, I feel puzzled looking at Industrial scenes in Video Games. They are like 3 order of magnitude simplified compared to a real plant.

ramshanker··on House prices are surging once again
I can confirm the same for my locality in India. ~20 to ~30% jump in last 1year.
ramshanker··on Search.chatgpt.com domain and SSL cert have been created
Well, that was me trying to simplify the query for HN audiences. Let me recall the actual conversation.

Me: How to add missing monochrome.ctb file in autodesk dwg trueview?

[Upto this part google is same. Pointing to the same link, but not showing any steps though.]

Copilot: Here are the steps. Put them here in this folder......

Me: I put it there as suggested. Still didn't work. How to make tureview refer another folder location?

Copilot: Here are the steps.

Me: It worked thank you. [I really thanked it ;)]

ramshanker··on Search.chatgpt.com domain and SSL cert have been created
Just today, I was having difficulty with printing in AutoDesk software. Copilot(Previw) was right there at the bottom, I opened it and asked for steps to solve the issue. It told, in steps, exactly what to do, which worked as instructed. Solving my issue. The original article from AutoDesk was also linked. My immediate thinking was search is doomed.

Compare this to what I would have to do with google. Open browser, type the query, guess which of the top 10 results are likely to answer the issue I was having. Click few link to open them in new tab. Read though it to see if the correct problem was being discussed. If not see another link in the top 10 list. Repeat.

I even thought where in that interface, Microsoft could place the future ads. It's totally in the realm.

EDIT: At this point, ChatGPT is basically old school "I am feeling lucky" on steroids.

ramshanker··on Meta's Onavo VPN removed SSL encryption of competitor's analytics traffic
This seems to be a valid reason to implement certificate pinning in the application's network layer. At least 3rd party VPN providers don't get to intercept without replacing the pin.

ramshanker··on China uses foreign firms to turbocharge its industry
>>>>> But there are some countries, like India, that might seem well-positioned to use this same strategy. Yet when I spoke with people familiar with India’s effort to build its first high-speed rail line, for example, they were frustrated that India didn’t do more to get technology and know-how from their Japanese partners. <<<<<

For 2 reasons. 1st: Ours is financed by Japan with long term loan. 2nd: We value good relations with many countries. Afterall, for complex projects such as High Speed Rail, there are many disciplines involved. Civil, Mechanical Traction, Electrical, Signaling and so on. No need to learn all of them in one go. There are 10+ projects coming up. We will get the technology eventually, voluntarily by competitive bidding among players. A good chunk of our High Speed rail projects are being executed by Indian contractors. They are really learning and gaining the experience.

PS: My employer had the opportunity to oversee some of the domestic contractor's execution based on Japanese specifications. We learned quite a lot.

ramshanker··on The Reasonable Effectiveness of Using Old Phones as Servers
If there was a reliable way to keep locally deployed app running persistently, without getting killed by android OS, even newer Samsung low end phones could be used as server. Home WiFi connection auto with 5G fallback. It is too good a setup.

USB type C Ethernet adapter with power pass through should work as well. Battery acts a power backup. Edit: Something like https://amzn.in/d/gUg2zhT

ramshanker··on Advances in semiconductors are feeding the AI boom
When the limits of digital reaches the boundary of physics, Analogue is going make a comeback. Human brain feels nearer to Analogue than Digital. I will be surprised to reach AGI without nearing the Order-of-Magnitude of brain processing.

We need that ONE paper on analogue to end this quest of trillions and counting transistors.

ramshanker··on Germany's solar panel industry, once a leader, is getting squeezed
To me, solar panels are very simplified stuffs compared to say cars, machinery etc. At its core, solar panels are Billions-and-Billions of repetitive patterns of very few basic ingredients. So, whoever is good at scaling the manufacturing will win. Even if the scaled-out panel has efficiency few % lower than state of art.
ramshanker··on India's TikTok Ban Is a Cautionary Tale for the U.S.
This. Plane and simple. And from my limited interactions with teenagers, no one is missing it. YouTube and Instagram now offer everything needed.

Nothing like freedom of a speech, government oversight etc. etc. the article is trying to portray.

ramshanker··on EFF: Tell Congress: We Can't Afford More Bad Patents
I am of the opinion that instead of letting legaleses define good/bad patent, we should let the economics work it out. Mandate patent filers to declare a public flat license fee . Along with annual recurring patent-maintenance tax to government as some X% of that declared fee.

Market will decide which patents are worth maintaining for 20 years, and government get proportional revenue as well.

ramshanker··on Oh shit, my app is successful and I didn't think about accessibility
>>>>> We’re going to look at a dead simple, cat-themed, companion app I created especially for this article. <<<<<

Reading that sent me a chill. So now people are creating new app for each article! Reading further, I understand why it had to be done for this article, but just imagine. Now a days even one-off events have dedicated APP for visitors management. What next, one for each booth of the event.

ramshanker··on BYD launches cheaper Seagull EV with $9,700 starting price tag
India has equally priced Cars from domestic manufacturers. BYD is not going to gain meaningful market share here.
ramshanker··on Spotify, Epic Games pen letter to EC, claiming Apple has made a 'mockery' of DMA
We need more strongly worded regulations / verdicts to tame these anti-competitive behaviors.

Whichever country drafts the next regulation on the same line should incorporate a clause something like "Users must be free to create, distribute & install any software / applications on their own devices without any involvement of Platform Operator, with equal access to APIs available to native stores".

ramshanker··on Non-code contributions to open source
Excellent. Same here. I have got Media Wiki installed in one of our internal servers and currently in the processes of updating the configurations to comply with Security Auditor requirements. I hope it takes off similarly over here.
ramshanker··on Non-code contributions to open source
Agree. I am in the process of launching a new Open-Source project for Civil/Mechanical/Chemical engineers. In my gut feelings, this software shall be used by at least 10x Engineers compared to the number who may actually help code it. So, there must be a way for those Users to contribute back to the project. Even if it is simply improving the docs. If I use a static site generator such as Hugo to generate the docs (EDIT: user manual in our language), there must be a way for users (not developers) to submit correction/updates to the docs. I can't expect them to create a GitHub issue either, so I have to think about a way to do this. i.e. In this case, non-code contributions are far more important than the actual pull request.
ramshanker··on AWS charge for using IPv4 expected to bring $1B/year and speed up IPv6 adoption
I hope we see a not-so-subtle jump in usage on google ipv6 tracker.

https://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/statistics.html

Anecdote, my ISP gives us IPv6 but not my employer. We use the IT equipment till the last breadth. I have seen, permanent table-fan running towards Floor's network hub. I guess that one is NOT IPv6 ready. :D
