ramshanker··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
Currently working on C++ DirectX12 graphics engine of my Engineering / CAD software. Part of my Mission Vishwakarma 2035.

ramshanker··on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion
>>>>Hey, I'm nearly 80 years old.

You are an inspiration. I will remember this when I grow older. Just wanted to say this, I am 1/2 your age, and I am sure there are 1/3 or even 1/4 people here. ;)

ramshanker··on How Taalas “prints” LLM onto a chip?
I can imagine, where this becomes a mainstream PCIe extension card. Like back in days we had separate graphics card, audio card etc. Now AI card. So to upgrade the PC to latest model, we could buy a new card, load up the drivers and boom, intelligence upgrade of the PC. This would be so cool.
ramshanker··on The path to ubiquitous AI (17k tokens/sec)
I was all praise for Cerberus, and now this ! $30 M for PCIe card in hand, really makes it approachable for many startups.
ramshanker··on FreeCAD
As I said, all these are optimized for Mechanical engineering, to the best of my knowledge. In civil, there are lots of standardization in 3D part and a lot more focus on 2D side. Major part of building design is using standard steel section. Mechanical side, apart from nut bolts, everything seems to be custom. Software interfaces prioritize these use cases.

Think of I beams, all major countries have national standards of shapes and sizes. There are many "devil in detail" nuances.

So, giving it a go myself. If not for others, at least for my own itch. This is one aspect of open source.

ramshanker··on AI is destroying open source, and it's not even good yet
3 days late clarification: It is for personal projects! Not for sumbitting pull requests to established projects.
ramshanker··on FreeCAD
I will try the newer version again. Last I tried 2 years or so back, it was crashing for me.

Personal Context: I am a civil enginer, and our requirement from CAD softwares are a lot simpler than Mechanical Engineering. Here on HN, whenever I see people discussing CAD, its the mechanical version of parts and 3d printing.

Shameless Plug: I have decided to try building my own! Over a long enough timeline, it is doable, including the UI/UX part.

ramshanker··on AI is destroying open source, and it's not even good yet
At least for me personal open source project[1], it has been >5x boost. In speed, motivation. Operating knowledge level etc. At some places, I even put inline comment, "this generated function is not understood completely" ! Or may be a question on specific syntex (c++20).

ramshanker··on Anthropic raises $30B in Series G funding at $380B post-money valuation
At least xAI now has a revenue generation backer. SpaceX.

Others must pull up their revenue number.

ramshanker··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
Do we get any model architecture details like parameter size etc.? Few months back, we used to talk more on this, now it's mostly about model capabilities.
ramshanker··on Show HN: Craftplan – I built my wife a production management tool for her bakery
Not just that, previously many orgs outsourced to consultancy, now when the consultancies also start outsourcing to AI, sooner all business may cut the middleman and have inhouse it teams outsourcing work to AI instead of consultancies !
ramshanker··on Doing the thing is doing the thing
Thank you for shaking me once more .....
ramshanker··on Ask HN: What did you read in 2025?
This year: DirectX12 documentation. Lots of them. Harry Potter part 7 (again). Read Part 1 and 2 to kid.
ramshanker··on Google works to erode Nvidia's software advantage with Meta's help
Is there anything preventing incumbents from developing their own ASIC equivalent of a google TPU?

Or maybe the GPUs are not really that different from TPU.

To me, one of the secret sauce of AI chips is Memory amd Interconnect bandwidth. Memory everyone is using the same HBM series. No difgerentiation. Multi chasis Interconnect is already not bottlenecked vs compute. So GPUs aren,t any worse.

Ammuter Guesswork!

ramshanker··on Analysis finds anytime electricity from solar available as battery costs plummet
Has any production battery become cheaper than LEAC ACID for computer UPS ? I have not seen new cheaper UPS getting launched.
ramshanker··on After the Bubble
I am not effected by this version of bubble, except for I want RAM prices to come down for my new PC build.
ramshanker··on Samsung's 60% DRAM price hike signals a new phase of global memory tightening
Somebody do the math on when we will reliably start running out of Grid Power. Than only this "AI builout" will slow down. Manufactiring generators is boring, and very less invested than manufacturing AI servers.
ramshanker··on Android developer verification: Early access starts
Ancedotal: I used to believe in this "freedom to install". Than my Father got scammed (~$1000) in the name of Electricity recharge. The APK was sent over WhatsApp. Now I am not so sure how to implement this freedom. At the bare minimum there has to be big red warnings.

One thing which can immediately improve security is forbidding SMS read access forever. Just like Apple does. No App should be able to read SMS.

ramshanker··on iPhone Pocket
This will make theft so much easier as compared to normal trouser pocket. It's more of a style thing I guess.
ramshanker··on An investigation into Substrate
I have been thinking, if the "generate soft xray for lithography by particle accelerators" is remotely feasible as being claimed by substrate. I remember reading some chineese startup / university also trying to do so. ASML is best position to execute this. They have the money, cashflow and talent, R&D culture all available. ASML may very well be the one actually doing this.
ramshanker··on Ubios: China's Alternative to UEFI
More competetion always welcome.

Few weeks back they had HDMI/DisplayPort alternate standardized as well.

ramshanker··on Cerebras systems raises $1.1B Series G
I am not able to guess, what is preventing Cerebras from replacing few of the cores in the Wafer-Scale package with HBM memory? It seems the only constraint with their WSE3 is memory capacity. Considering the size of NVDA chips, Only a small subset of wafer area should easily exceed the memory size of contemporary models.
ramshanker··on DeepSeek-v3.2-Exp
What happened to Meta Open weights models? Lately I keep hearing more of Deepseek than LAAMA?
ramshanker··on US Gov acknowledges that 100K fee does not apply to existing H-1B visas holders [pdf]
I am happy to have this 100k rule announced. Couldn't be better way to stop the Brain Drain.
ramshanker··on Open hardware desktop 3D printing is dead?
Requiring an annual patent maintenance tax proportional to pre-declared fair licensing fee will ensure fairness for everyone. Including foreign patents. So whichever jurisdiction, patent holders want to retain the rights, can pay the tax annually. We can even come up with a public domain threshold as well. If 1000 people / company paid your pre-declared licensing fee, it becomes public domain. And no more per device license fee. 1 Patent, 1 Fee, 1 Annual Tax.

Same for copyrights.

ramshanker··on Claude Sonnet 4 now supports 1M tokens of context
I mean the website of AI providers. chatgpt.com , gemini.google.com , claude.ai and so on.
ramshanker··on Claude Sonnet 4 now supports 1M tokens of context
Same here. A small variation: I explicitly use website to manage what context it gets to see.
ramshanker··on H-1B Visa Changes Approved by White House
Delhi-NCR welcomes those finding it difficult in Bangalore. Already home to 1 offices of few biggest names in US. [Disclaimer: My City]
