ramphastidae··on Wikipedia admin jailed for 32 years after alleged Saudi infiltration
> If you do not like what they do inside then do not deal with them.

Is that what you would have told Jamal Khashoggi?

ramphastidae··on Names that decreased in popularity from 2020 to 2021
Alexa at #7 for women. Poor Alexen.
ramphastidae··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
Please share if you remember!
ramphastidae··on Bitcoin worth $1.5B withdrawn from Coinbase in 48 hours
> the third-largest withdrawal from the exchange
ramphastidae··on Notes on Saudi Arabia
You have about 150 years of history to catch up on. Sure, human rights was founded in western culture, but has been adopted across the world since.
ramphastidae··on Notes on Saudi Arabia
It’s not about east vs west. It’s about basic human rights.
ramphastidae··on 'Bin chickens' learned to wash poisonous cane toads
Do you happen to have a source for that story? That’s really interesting.
ramphastidae··on Coinbase Hits Record Low as Crypto Contagion Anxiety Intensifies
You have been fooled by 0% interest rates.
ramphastidae··on Laying myself off from Amazon
Why not skip the recurring ticket and reduce your sprint capacity by 2?
ramphastidae··on Disk Prices
Products that are sold after the year they have been manufactured are not scams.
ramphastidae··on Ask HN: How to find an in-office tech job
Real finance like trading firms and investment banks (not fintech) were and still are almost entirely in-office.
ramphastidae··on Infosys asked HR not to hire 'Indian-origin candidates', 'women with children'
I agree but the reason for the difference is because the “offshore” folks have zero incentive to do so. There’s literally no point beyond keeping their job (and because of the incredibly low bar and compensation, it’s not at all difficult to find another one). They are there to fill seats and hours, not be productive or efficient.
ramphastidae··on Infosys asked HR not to hire 'Indian-origin candidates', 'women with children'
Devils advocate: would he get paid any more to be more efficient? Or would he just get more work?
ramphastidae··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
What exactly is your USB-C cable example meant to illustrate? You were successfully able to buy a cheaper cable without any laws being passed. Seems like things are working fine as-is.
ramphastidae··on CIA launches a podcast, hoping to ‘demystify’ the agency and boost recruitment
Of course it’s the CIA’s choice. There is no law saying that the CIA can’t hire someone who has broken the law. Are jaywalkers banned from being hired by the CIA too? It’s their choice to determine their self-defeating hiring requirements.
ramphastidae··on Work is work, in which returns diminish (2020)
If someone puts on a pair of jeans followed by a pair of socks, how many articles of clothing have been put on? :)
ramphastidae··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
No one said it’s evil. But it’s worse in price, taste, and nutrition, obviously. That’s why it’s called fast food. It’s optimized for speed and convenience. I eat fast food myself. But only when I have no other option.

Do you also think anyone who says Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t good coffee is “brainwashed”?

ramphastidae··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
Because, relative to most other options, it’s worse. It’s kibble for humans.
ramphastidae··on Ask HN: Longevity for your parents, what to do?
This is a sad comment.
ramphastidae··on The Pickleball Troll
You sound incredibly biased. It’s a retirement community, not your parents’ personal gym. If the residents of the community are all upset, maybe it’s your parents that need to find something (or somewhere) better to do.
ramphastidae··on The richer people get, the more meat they eat
Tofu.
ramphastidae··on Israel bans use of cash for purchases larger than NIS 6k (~1700 USD/EUR)
> That's the natural evolution of the economy anyways, optimizing energy, resources and usages, no waste, no trash

I don’t think there’s any evidence in the least.

ramphastidae··on How to drive away your best engineers
This is pure fantasy. Markets have never been efficient and actors have never been rational.
ramphastidae··on I deleted 78% of my Redis container and it still works
The last time this was submitted, the comments were filled with obvious sockpuppet accounts praising the author and write up: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31768241

Are you a spammer, Vinod Gupta?

ramphastidae··on Pipenv: Promises a Lot, Delivers Little (2020)
This simply doesn’t work on a large, shared codebase. Locking dependency versions is a must. You can’t just roll the dice that no breaking changes have been introduced by dependencies.
ramphastidae··on Success stories are propaganda (2017)
Being able to use social media during the work day doesn’t make housing or health care any more affordable. Don’t those count as real problems?
ramphastidae··on We Need to Stop Pretending we can Limit Global Warming to 1.5°C
The NYC mayor tried 10 years ago and was stopped by opposition politicians: https://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/bloombergs-20b-plan-protec...

> The mayor proposed a series of strategic flood walls, surge barriers, dunes, tidal barriers, and bulkheads built around the coasts strategically, to insulate the coastal areas, as well as building codes to protect homes and businesses against flooding and infrastructure improvements to prevent power, fuel, and telecommunication outages.

ramphastidae··on Weedkiller ingredient tied to cancer found in 80% of US urine samples
Society loves to make fun of those who choose organic produce, but avoiding glysophate is the main reason I do so, and it works:

> Organic diet intervention significantly reduces urinary glyphosate levels in U.S. children and adults > https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S001393512...

ramphastidae··on Ask HN: How to get job without technical interview?
I think you would benefit from changing your attitude a bit. You’re not going to change the system, so I’d suggest changing your mindset from “how do I get a job without a technical interview” to “what skills do I need to improve to pass more technical interviews.” I understand you have ADHD but that is an issue faced by many people and there are a lot of pharmaceutical options to address it available today. Additionally, saying that contracting is not an option because you wouldn’t have full control of the result is a massive red flag to me (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31893663) and makes it seem like the ADHD is not the main issue at all.
ramphastidae··on The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level and Inflation Episodes
> Great. What was the faceless government's motivation?

To stabilize society during a time when millions of people were unable to work due to a pandemic, obviously? I don’t think this is the gotcha you think it is.
