ramonverse··on Show HN: Vox – Listen to articles using a static website and OpenAI TTS API
Would be nice if you used AI to "clean" the article. The reason why I didn't like other readers is because they just access the website in reader mode and transcribe, but they keep all the urls, weird tittle formatting etc which makes the transcription really annoying to listen too. I think a simple prompt like "rewrite this article removing all formatting, just keep the content" should work!

i'm curious about the chunk splitting approach you mentioned. how do you determine the optimal chunk size for processing? seems like there could be a tradeoff between context preservation and processing efficiency. have you experimented with different chunk sizes and their impact on the quality of the final output? this could be really important for handling things like long-range dependencies in the text.

Many years ago I tried Flutter. I had to stackoverflow every single thing because dash is a language that nobody uses (maybe it is easier now with chatgpt but this was before openai releases it). In comparison React Native feels familiar to anyone who has uses React (with in 2024 is pretty much everyone who has done anything in frontend) and you only need to read a fairly short documentation explaining the core components https://reactnative.dev/docs/components-and-apis

Regarding Expo, I found the the easiest and most sane way to get iOS compilation working. It worked for me and got it set up in < 1h. Just getting Xcode to work took me way more and I don't even use xcode to code wtf

ramonverse··on Launch HN: Stack Auth (YC S24) – An Open-Source Auth0/Clerk Alternative
I think COSS is great, it makes the code more secure and auditable and makes sure the developers get paid to fix security vulnerabilities. Volunteer OSS is great in theory but it sometimes leads to overworked developers being exploited by foreign intelligence services https://www.techrepublic.com/article/xz-backdoor-linux/. Supabase & Nextjs are part of the so called VC backed open source and they are great.
ramonverse··on FakeTraveler: Fake where your phone is located (Mock location for Android)
Afaik nearby wifi networks are also used to determine location. As long as you have wifi activated Google can use this to determine where you are. I don't know if they use this as a hard check.

The only way I can think of to prevent this is to build a faraday cage with a wired vpn router and your phone inside.

ramonverse··on Difference between running Postgres for yourself and for others
> Security: Did you know that with one simple trick you can drop to the OS from PostgreSQL and managed service providers hate that? The trick is COPY table_name from COMMAND

I certainly did not know that.

ramonverse··on Show HN: Perplexity (llama3 70B) Inline Bot on Telegram
I like under the hood info, that is why I am in hackernews :)
ramonverse··on Show HN: Adding Mistral Codestral and GPT-4o to Jupyter Notebooks
Ramon here, the other cofounder of Pretzel! Quick update: Based on some early feedback, we're already working on adding support for local LLMs and Claude Sonnet 3.5. Happy to answer any questions!
ramonverse··on The super effectiveness of Pokémon embeddings using only raw JSON and images
really cool read!
ramonverse··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
While they pick up in almost every location the drop off is sometimes "close by" like 3min walk to final destination (the app tells you in advance tho so you can decide to order or not). This is quite annoying sometimes and I picked uber instead.

I am tired of posts written by chatgpt
ramonverse··on Show HN: Alpha Demo of NotePad.ai (open source)
Hi cool stuff, would like to see some valid uses cases of how you use it in your daily routine. Would be way more useful if it was a mobile app (e.g. PWA). Also, a bit frictional to try the demo if we need to put our api key, consider getting some free credits (e.g. microsoft for startups program gives ~2.5k to anyone) so you can let people try it immediately!
ramonverse··on Show HN: I made a tiny camera with super long battery life
can you make a microphone? I would buy that
ramonverse··on Show HN: Desbordante 2.0 – A high-performance data profiler
I personally like it when there is a demo video in the Readme so I can easily see how the product works. Maybe consider adding that
ramonverse··on Show HN: We built PriceLevel to find out what companies pay for SaaS
Cool idea, hope it grows!
ramonverse··on Colab notebook to create Magic cards from image with Claude
cool project. Can we see some example magic cards created? thanks!
ramonverse··on Show HN: WhatTheDuck – open-source, in-browser SQL on CSV files
Cool stuff, we are also building in the space, currently adding Python support with Pyodide. I would recommend you add your live website at the top of the README so people can find it easily (we had a lot of views that way for https://github.com/pretzelai/pretzelai). Also, we added a simple text2sql "Ask AI" that users loved, maybe your users will like it too.
ramonverse··on Show HN: Open-source, browser-local data exploration using DuckDB-WASM and PRQL
Ramon from Pretzel here, thank you for your feedback! We definitely have this on the roadmap:

1. Allow to download/upload workflows as files (maybe JSON, or PRQL)

2. Allow to share private URLs by attaching the workflow as a URL parameter

We are building a roadmap upvoting site, we'll add it to the README as soon as it's ready
