ramidarigaz··on Khan Academy: the bad
When reading this article, the thing that came to mind was his TED talk (http://www.ted.com/talks/salman_khan_let_s_use_video_to_rein...)

I think Salman Khan's biggest point in the talk seems to address this guy's complaint. He's not aiming to replace the teacher, he's aiming to replace the lecture. Students go home, watch his videos at whatever pace suits them, and then they go to school and have the really important interaction with the teacher and other students, which can also happen at the student's desired pace.

I second that. I already 'know' C, but it's mostly self-taught, and I feel like I'm missing a lot of the little tricks and some of the fundamentals.

Also, even if it only had a chapter on ZeroMQ, I'd be ecstatic. I've messed around with it a little, but a good review of it would be wonderful.

Ubuntu 10.10 Chromium 12.0.723.0 is broken. Exactly like the screenshot somebody posted.
ramidarigaz··on Google Page Speed Online
Hmmm... Contrary to a lot of recommendations I see here on HN (patio11 mainly), they seem to recommend enabling keep-alive.
ramidarigaz··on A human error caused some sensitive server...
Well, excepting cosmic ray bit-flipping and the like.

There's no way they lost money because of the hacking. They probably made money from the publicity.

Edit: I'm agreeing with you haha.

ramidarigaz··on Biologists and dolphins have created a new inter-species language
Yeah. Try expressing good manners to fish... It might be a mammalian thing, but I doubt it goes outside that.
ramidarigaz··on Why is Google so hysterically hypocritical about Bing using its public data?
You may not benefit from the indexing of your link, but you certainly benefit from the indexing of other people's links. Unless, of course, you don't use search on the internet.
ramidarigaz··on Poll: What is your personal annual income?
Student... Oddly enough, I can get by comfortably on 20k USD a year. It's not even an uncomfortable stretch.
ramidarigaz··on Poll: Have you ever applied to work at Google?
For one, I'm a student. I could go the internship route (I'd actually like to at some point), but also, I have a pretty sweet job right now :)
ramidarigaz··on End of an Era: No Linux Desktop at Home (after 17 years)
I dunno. I agree with some of the other posters here. I've been using Ubuntu pretty much exclusively for 2.5 years, and it's been great. I just research the hardware I buy to ensure that everything works out of the box. There are a few glitches, but nothing that really gets in my way. I keep Windows around for the games that don't work well with Wine, but other than that, Ubuntu works great.
ramidarigaz··on Using Python generators for real work [pdf]
This is awesome. I think I finally understand generators, and I just thought of a couple use cases in the code I'm working on now. This is great. Fantastic submission.
ramidarigaz··on What Hollywood Execs Privately Say About Netflix
I'd say competence in a business model that is broken is identical to incompetence in a current or rising business model.
ramidarigaz··on Why Minecraft Matters
What's really interesting is that it's not Mojang that has the following, it's Notch. If Notch gets screwed, he has tons of loyal fans who will jump to his defense. Unless he does something stupid himself (and he doesn't seem the type), he'll have a strong following for a long time.
ramidarigaz··on Projects: hijack (Hijacking the iPhone earphone jack)
It doesn't drain the battery any more than listening to music does :) Really cool project!
ramidarigaz··on Frickin’ Laser Beams: Fact vs Fiction

ramidarigaz··on The No. 1 Habit of Highly Creative People
Really? I don't think so. Some of the coolest ideas I've ever had have come during discussions with friends. I'm most productive when I'm alone, but rarely do I have creative ideas by myself.
ramidarigaz··on Pirate Apple App Store Innovates With ‘Reverse BitTorrent’
It's stealing because you're depriving someone of that yacht. It's not a lost sale because you wouldn't have bought one.
ramidarigaz··on How an Engineer Does Pizza
Completely true, unless you can guarantee that the tomatoes were picked fresh. My parents live near a little organic farm that we've been buying from for about a decade. We can drive to the farm stand and buy a bag of ripe, delicious tomatoes that was literally picked an hour before. Those made some of the best tomato sauce and salsa I've ever had.

ramidarigaz··on How to Hack the Psychology of Student Motivation
I get the same way. I've found that there's a huge boundary to getting started. I sit down and it seems like everything is in my way to getting started on a project. However, once I start writing code, it's not a problem. I did that all semester on my coding assignments. I'd dread them until about 2 weeks before they were due, then I'd sit down and start writing, and next thing I know it's 1AM and I'm almost done. Great feeling :)

But, as a counterpoint, if you want to copy several things to a folder, you do:

ramidarigaz··on Show HN: We made this 'Pandora for Music Videos', let me know what you think.
The UI is a little finicky. The artist selection when a video is playing tends to appear and disappear a little too easily.

Otherwise, awesome! I'll actually make use of this!

ramidarigaz··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2010 and briefly why
I love the way he captures the total destabilization of the country. I don't believe I've encountered another book that paints that kind of image so well.
ramidarigaz··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2010 and briefly why
Likewise. Noble House was a good read, but Shogun was much better.
ramidarigaz··on Ask HN: what are the best non-cash employment benefits you've heard of?
Along with your comment about a powerful machine and choice of OS, I'd like to add root access.

I don't have root access on my current computer, and it's a royal pain. For some boneheaded reason, no idea why, svn wasn't installed on it. I had to bother IT for three days to get it installed.

Thankfully, I'm about to get a new box on which I have been promised root. :)
