ramblerman··on Create value for others and don’t worry about the returns
> You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.

I have a hard time interpreting that as what geohotz is saying. If anything it seems to promote rent seekers by telling you - stick to your lane and don't complain. I.e. the caste system

ramblerman··on What Is a Centipawn Advantage?
If there is a 15 move sequence that leads to a guaranteed win, stockfish would not call it a 1 pawn advantage (given the sufficient calculation time) instead calling it a won position.

I think you may be mistaking your understanding of stockfish as shallow in that regard.

Where the big differences might emerge is in strategic mid game positions without any clear tactics or forcing moves. There lc0 can somehow "feel" that a position seems better.

ramblerman··on Claude Code for Infrastructure
Eh, this is the kind of pithy soundbite that sounds vaguely deep and intelligent but doesn't hold up.

In what domains have you had experience taking non programmers with domain knowledge and making them programmers?

ramblerman··on Clawdbot - open source personal AI assistant
OP did't like anthropomorphizing an LLM.

And you tried to explain the whole thing to him from the perspective of a duck.

ramblerman··on AI can 10x developers in creating tech debt
for what it's worth, it didn't seem odd to me. I guess the missing article and phrase indicate it's a verb.

"So AI can ... developers" is begging for a verb, there is no room for an adjective there.

ramblerman··on We might have been slower to abandon StackOverflow if it wasn't a toxic hellhole
I disliked the pedantic nature of stackoverflow like the next guy but this seems like a naive take.

SO solved a problem, that problem is now gone

ramblerman··on Try to take my position: The best promotion advice I ever got
It's almost as if it depends on the context and there isn't a simplistic bumper sticker approach.
ramblerman··on How to Win Friends and Influence People: Unrevised Version
> Maybe Carnegie’s relatives decided the book could appeal to a 2x audience?

So if a book uses male examples it only appeals to males, but if it uses female examples it appeals to both males and females?

ramblerman··on Satellites reveal heat leaking from largest US cryptocurrency mining center
> Some days I just can’t get over how we’re just the dumbest ##^*ing species to ever visit space

I also think we are pretty dumb. But what reference point makes you think we are either smarter or dumber than other spacefaring species

ramblerman··on Leaving the U.S. for the Netherlands
Sorry but as a southern Neighbor you are painting a picture of Europe 20 years ago.

Taxes these days keep up the ponzi scheme of european pensions and an influx of low skilled migrants that are not incentivized to work.

There is a a lot of budget between ur citizens not going bankrupt when they get sick and taking 50% of their salary.

ramblerman··on Bringing Sexy Back. Internet surveillance has killed eroticism
OP's point (imo valid) relates to the private sphere, and how we as normal humans are more afraid of outing our sexual fears/desires because of the possibility of them being amplified on the internet.

And you somehow think that millions of men masturbating to a few onlyfans accounts is a counterargument to show everything is actually fine

ramblerman··on AI has a deep understanding of how this code works
He didn't even realize (and apparently doesn't care) that portions of the code were attributed to another author.

> Here's my question: why did the files that you submitted name Mark Shinwell as the author?

> Beats me. AI decided to do so and I didn't question it.

---

Maybe he is having some kind of mental episode, is trolling, or genuinely doesn't care. But I would hardly hold this up as an example of an intelligent attempt at an AI generated PR.

ramblerman··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
Likely.

But the fact the last few iterations have all been about flair, it seems we are witnessing the regression of OpenAI into the typical fiefdom of product owners.

Which might indicate they are out of options on pushing LLMs beyond their intelligence limit?

ramblerman··on European Commission plans “digital omnibus” package to simplify its tech laws
This new package is about "removing regulation", specifically GDPR.

Which let's be honest has not achieved its intended target. Google/Apple/etc can easily afford to break GDPR and get caught up in fines while as a small business owner it was a huge and complicated liability.

ofc politico will frame this as a negative, it seems their only mission is to make moloch grow.

ramblerman··on Medical student ate 700 eggs in a month and his cholesterol levels dropped
It seems OP did it in ketosis, and then slowly experimented with adding healthy carbs back in limited amounts.

Unless otherwise mentioned, I assume your friend added a bunch of eggs to his existing diet, which is comparing apples and oranges.

ramblerman··on Zig feels more practical than Rust for real-world CLI tools
> you don't mean that all C programs have memory bugs

Well all of them "potentially" do, which is enough from a security standpoint

There have been enough zero days using memory leaks that we know the percentage is also non trivial.

So yes, if programmers can write bugs they will, google SREs were the first to famously measure bugs per release as a metric instead of the old fashioned (and naive) "we aren't gonna write any more bugs"

ramblerman··on Top Programming Languages 2025
I was questioning if OP was a karma farming bot, have a look at their profile. It's a lot of these odd one liner questions.

From the perspective of a useful thread, I agree with you

ramblerman··on Top Programming Languages 2025
I truly don't understand this on a tech forum. You have 6000 karma, is this a bot interaction to promote votes?

How does searching "Helsinki MOOC java" not immediately give you the result you are after?

ramblerman··on Top Programming Languages 2025
less and less, with the new release cycles.

What you get is either really old (Java 8 stuck on something nasty like weblogic).

Or companies running either cutting edge or LTS.

ramblerman··on Top Programming Languages 2025
You seem to be saying that SAP sucks because of how enterprise java is.

That would make OPs counter re netflix relevant. I don't understand your point

ramblerman··on Top Programming Languages 2025
Is there a reason to believe this would skew results?

i.e. Are you assuming (insinuating) jobs for some programming languages are more likely to be fake

ramblerman··on Omarchy Is Out
The whole point of omarchy is to give you great defaults, and then it being linux everything is completely customizable.

Which with ChatGpt/Grok is trivial these days for even a non linux native.

ramblerman··on Why are anime catgirls blocking my access to the Linux kernel?
Did you read the article? OP doesn't care about bots figuring it out. It's about the compute needed to do the work.

It's quite an interesting piece, I feel like you projected something completely different onto it.

Your point is valid, but completely adjacent.

ramblerman··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
I am originally from Europe as well. And still living there (not sure if that’s why you phrased it like that) but how many innovations from the us are really adding to the value of life vs just forcing eyeballs to screen.

Linux came from Europe. A lot of open source does, see blender.

I know VC money is sexy but does it add real value

ramblerman··on Grok: Searching X for "From:Elonmusk (Israel or Palestine or Hamas or Gaza)"
@dang why is this flagged?

Simonw is a long term member with a good track record, good faith posts.

And this post in particular is pretty incredible. The notion that Grok literally searches for "from: musk" to align itself with his viewpoints before answering.

That's the kind of nugget I'll go to the 3rd page for.

ramblerman··on The Moat of Low Status
Love the concept but “the moat of low status” is a poor name.

It implies a defensive structure. I.e the advantage I get out of low status.

Op even refers to the concept of moats as used in business, but clumsily hand waves the concept to fit her own.

The cage of low status would be more apt

ramblerman··on Show HN: Scream to Unlock – Blocks social media until you scream “I'm a loser”
you talk as if people have never overcome addiction with sheer willpower.
ramblerman··on What happens when clergy take psilocybin
Vonnegut sounds closer to an epicurist.

A nihilist would say fart or don't fart it's all pointless.

ramblerman··on Seedance 1.0
The difference is that the jury is still out if these things are truly generating something novel. Or are we just making it pick from the spaces in between an average of all the images on the internet.

The latter would mean everything quickly looks and feels the same.

I also believe some barrier to entry is needed for good art, people are inherently lazy and AI lets us get away with "just good enough" - see llm assisted coding as an example

ramblerman··on A Knockout Blow for LLMs?
You don’t need to feel offended on behalf of LLMs, they are tremendously useful. But not above criticism.

There is a belief being peddled that AGI is right around the corner and we can get there by just scaling up LLMs.

Papers like this are a good takedown of that thinking
