rambambram··on YouTube now world's largest media company, topping Disney
Shorts are pushed on the homepage and in the sidebar. At least in the UI that I see in Firefox desktop.

I sometimes wonder if other people get other UIs than I do. There's technically nothing stopping them from 'tailoring' the UI for different people.

rambambram··on YouTube now world's largest media company, topping Disney
Me too. Youtube must know better than me what to recommend me out of all the videos... still, I get presented the same shite again and again.

To be fair: not everything is shite and Youtube is my favorite social media (especially for discovering new music), but I noticed a big drop in quality from one day to the other a couple of years ago.

rambambram··on The future of everything is lies, I guess: Work
The comparison with sociopaths is a good one. On the surface all human behavior, but if you lift the veil even a little bit it becomes clear there's no substance, no conscience, etc.

Read up on Cluster B personality disorders (borderline, narcissism, sociopaths/psychopaths) and you see the similarities. Love bombing, gaslighting, a shared fantasy, etc. It's very interesting and scary at the same time.

rambambram··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
Yeah, I noticed Evolution as a standard install on some distros as well. I might look into it, thanks.
rambambram··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
Just donated. Have been using Thunderbird for years. I once donated to Wikipedia - and they have billions I heard - so might as well donate to another important piece of software for my digital life.

Now that I read the comments I find out Mozilla might have enough money and a CEO taking in millions. Any recommendations for a good email client on Linux? Just as a backup for now...

rambambram··on Show HN: Brutalist Concrete Laptop Stand (2024)
Nice!

I've always wanted to build a computer like the iMac G4, with the half sphere, the arm and the monitor. In my street there was a pebble/rock (the size of a rugby ball, pretty smooth surface) laying around near a tree, and I thought of taking it with me as the base for this computer. It's beautiful stone. I should have grabbed it, because now it's gone.

But it required a lot of grinding and sanding to make it ready. I think pouring concrete is a better option for my idea.

Thanks for the inspiration!

rambambram··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
Any idea how stupid this title sounds!? It's past exaggeration.
rambambram··on Got kicked out of uni and had the cops called for a social media website I made
Hey Mony, I want to follow your blog, please have an RSS feed for it if you can.
rambambram··on Got kicked out of uni and had the cops called for a social media website I made
Hahaha, I get 'The Social Network' vibes from this story. You should read his other posts also. Let's just say the guy has more than enough confidence.
rambambram··on I'm betting on ATProto
I'm betting on domain names, HTML and email.
rambambram··on I wanted to build vertical SaaS for pest control, so I took a technician job
From above: "endless job that could kill somebody if you stop paying attention"
rambambram··on Thinking Fast, Slow, and Artificial: How AI Is Reshaping Human Reasoning
> In other words, I try to learn from it whenever it does something I can't do...

So you know it can be full of sh1t on all kinds of topics, and you start learning from it the moment it's 'talking' about subjects you know you don't know about? To me that sounds like the moment to stop, not the moment to start. Or am I missing something?

rambambram··on The Social Smolnet
Been saying this for years. The www is already a social network.
rambambram··on The “small web” is bigger than you might think
I guessed that might be the reason, smart move. Have you tried a webform in the past which resulted in a lot of crappy submissions?
rambambram··on The “small web” is bigger than you might think
It might sound stupid, but I'm not a git or github user, I would rather fill in a webform to submit a new website and feed.
rambambram··on Digg is gone again
Everything clicks nice, so to speak. A nice UI you have there.

I would suggest you explain what it's about in one sentence, just like you explain in your HN profile. The About-page says not so much. You can add some explanation there, or even just one sentence at the top of the homepage (or other pages).

rambambram··on Using Thunderbird for RSS
Not to take away from your experience, but I wrote my own simple self-hosted RSS reader and it has no problems at all with around 2000 feeds I throw at it regularly. About 1% of the feeds does not parse for me, probably because of incorrect xml or a bug on my part.
rambambram··on Digg is gone again
Nice. I like how clicking a tag also makes the word 'tag' light up.
rambambram··on Learnings from paying artists royalties for AI-generated art
I'm not a native English speaker, but since when became 'lessons' a 'learnings'?
rambambram··on Flash media longevity testing – 6 years later
A couple of millennia might suffice. ;) Thanks for the input.

The engraving pen on glass is a good one. Any experience with it?

rambambram··on Flash media longevity testing – 6 years later
Thanks! I appreciate the input.

Do you just use regular graphite pencils, like with the HB scale or something?

rambambram··on Flash media longevity testing – 6 years later
Thanks for the insight.

Acid-free paper sounds like the way to go. Do you have experience with this? Or is it common knowledge? Just curious!

I also read letters from my grandparents, stored by my parents in a simple shoe box. No special conditions, just light-free and inside the home for decades. They were still very much readable. I did not pay enough attention, but I guess it was blue ink from back in the day that they used.

rambambram··on Flash media longevity testing – 6 years later
I could google it, but I would rather ask HN: what are the best pens (or pen(cil)/paper-combination) for keeping written text as long as possible? I had some Stabilo pen which was very nice ergonomically, but the blue ink faded within a couple of years (laying on my window sil in the sun, but still).

My guess is: regular graphite pencil on porous paper is best. Any ideas about further things I have to take into account?

rambambram··on I love email (2023)
I've done that the past couple of years two handfuls of times. Mostly to people I discovered on HN, with a nice hardware or software project. Only once did I get a nasty reply (probably because I was too much in my enthusiasm), so I'll remember you, you Italian prick. ;)

Most replies are very nice. People really feel seen and appreciated when I compliment them on their cool project and nice write up.

Even if no one replies, I would still send the occasional email, because I want independent websites/blogs to thrive and stay.

rambambram··on The death of social media is the renaissance of RSS (2025)
I've been calling it 'Really Social Sites' for a long time. ;)
rambambram··on Good software knows when to stop
Also from 37signals, somewhere in their first book they talked about the importance of 'evergreen' things people always want, things like 'the speed of software'. As a junior dev I didn't really get the point or thought it was not that important. I browsed further in the book looking for other gems of wisdom, and this 'speed'-thing only stuck in my head for the wrong reason, thinking it was a little obvious for such clear writers with a solid vision.

Only 15 years later - now a couple of years back - I started to realize the importance of this. The apps on my smartphones seemed to get slower and slower by the year. The fast software experiences were a real joy amidst slow apps. I now have an appreciation for their opinion on 'evergreen' things like the speed of software.

rambambram··on The View from RSS
I used some strange wording when I read it back, but that's what I meant.
rambambram··on The View from RSS
I forgot to say, most of these 2000 feeds I have from here on HN. Please keep posting on your own website/blog and 'share' with RSS.
rambambram··on The View from RSS
Nice! I'm also around 2000 feeds in my reader, carefully selected over a couple of years. Only difference: I always click through to the website to read an article.

Now in the process of slowly making RSS my only social feed. Have a hard time of leaving Youtube, but once I embedded the videos of the channels I follow in my RSS reader I see a way of not getting annoyed by the recommendation algorithm on their website anymore.
