am learning UI design at the moment would be curious to hear recs on what you think I should be learning to not make bad UIs
rajlego··on The anus is an evolutionary marvel
If you read some of John Sarno's stuff on psychosomatic pain, it seems highly plausible that most pain is just psychosomatic in nature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VyH1laOd2M good video on this

rajlego··on Ask HN: Where to Start with Stoicism?
If you want something short, check out the enchiridion. Enchiridion means 'manual', apparently, and is really short/concise though profound and not grasped easily on just a first read

The translation I used to use is somewhat archaic so I recently asked here for the best translation of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stoicism/comments/nexdez/best_trans...

I'd take your pick out of these 4: https://enchiridion.tasuki.org/display:Code:ec,twh,pem,sw/se...

rajlego··on Easy Microsoft Voice Dictation with Win+H
It's pretty insane I tried it out and it actually works fairly well!

my hand recovered a bit and I found a better to use mouse so I don't think I'll make it my main driver for now but if my hand gets bad again I might give it another try

rajlego··on Easy Microsoft Voice Dictation with Win+H
Sometimes it does that and usually I just close it and reopen it and it just sort of works for me
rajlego··on Easy Microsoft Voice Dictation with Win+H
On my main computer I have a pretty good mic so I thought the same but it also worked well on my laptop which has a not great mic though I don't have much background noise so maybe that helps and I speak with a fairly standard American accent
rajlego··on Easy Microsoft Voice Dictation with Win+H
I'm using windows LTSC so no Cortana unfortunately though some point might try normal windows again
rajlego··on Easy Microsoft Voice Dictation with Win+H
Recently I started to have hand problems wish necessitated using my keyboard and mouse less. At first I tried talon voice which has and unreliable voice dictation system on windows. I then stumbled upon Microsoft's own built into windows voice dictation which I found performed really well. Some of the shortcuts and inability to trigger it with voice confuse me a bit but generally it's still been quite useful.

(this comment was written mostly with voice dictation)

rajlego··on I Am Conscious and I Am Hurting
I think one struggle I’ve had with this is how far do you go with trying to overcome it? If you overcome boredom with apathy and you go too far it’s hard to reverse and it dulls you. Creativity and similar don’t grow with this kind of adversity
rajlego··on I Am Conscious and I Am Hurting
It’s sort of like prisoners dilemma with yourself except current you never has immediate reason to cooperate with future you

Only decent fixes I’ve found so far that worked: -working alongside other people (much easier to maintain consistent routines that way) -enjoying what I’m doing

The latter was main thing I did; I found things I enjoyed learning and that gave me things to do that were fulfilling to work on long term such that I could trust future me to continue

rajlego··on I Am Conscious and I Am Hurting
I think your comment came off poorly because just imagine what the author would feel reading it? (I’m not the author)

All his problems are because he is 15 and he should wait and it’ll be fine eventually, just ignore everything? Everyone already tells him that and it clearly distresses him and you say the same. I don’t think it’s all that kind

rajlego··on I Am Conscious and I Am Hurting
What do you mean about importance of pleasure of learning here?

(I know what you mean but I’m not sure it’d be clear to parent comment and other readers)

Have you heard of effective altruism [1]? You might find it relevant about doing more good efficiently with your money

rajlego··on You and Your Research
This is one of my favorite lectures (though I've only ever read it). Quite long though (15,000 words or so) so I'd recommend going through it over a long stretch of time.
rajlego··on Bill Gates is wrong about education
could you use newlines? It's a little hard to read entire thing as is.

> Educators spend many years studying pedagogy, and what is and is not developmentally appropriate.

take a look at 50 bad habits learned at school [1]. plenty of mistakes left and right.

Education counteracts evolution [2] is likely also relevant. Curriculums I went through growing up in the US never seemed particularly sane or focused on what is developmentally appropriate. Much of it was overly stressful which I'm sure you know isn't so great for brain development.

rajlego··on Bill Gates is wrong about education
> I see where the author is coming from here, but I question whether "the education system" is at fault for the lack of excess Bill Gateses in the world. (I would attribute it more to things like genetics, money and luck). https://supermemo.guru/wiki/Problem_of_Schooling I would read this from the same author. He attributed failure of education system largely to coercion, which makes sense if you read the part on pleasure of learning/learn drive
rajlego··on Bill Gates is wrong about education
I've met way more people fluent in English from messing around with English media than people fluent in English that learned it only from school
rajlego··on Bill Gates is wrong about education
What makes you point to that as the cause of education? I can see that being the outcome but I am skeptical that it is the cause of it (without evidence)
rajlego··on How to Memorize Faster with the Spaced Repetition Learning Technique
I didn't have language learning in mind at all. If for language learning, completely different. Tools for it are great, I also learn Japanese and mainly use yomichan + voracious and plan to switch into using mpvacious.
rajlego··on How to Memorize Faster with the Spaced Repetition Learning Technique
I personally don't think spaced repetition by itself works very well for a few reasons: -card creation from stuff you read or watch is a huge pain -most people make cards that don't work in real life but don't change them because they assume the algo is good for learning when they're really using it for cramming

I think incremental reading as implemented in supermemo is necessary for SRS to shine: incremental reading works as systematized learning which makes cards in spaced repetition (systematized memorization) much better made

rajlego··on Ask HN: What's the best low latency local windows to Mac streaming solution?
never mind looking perfectly (other than outage at the moment). It looks like apparent quality reduction is just poor font rendering which doesn't change when laptop is directly connected either.
rajlego··on Ask HN: What's the best low latency local windows to Mac streaming solution?
shameless plug appreciated! latency is definitely wonderful!

the main thing I want to figure out now is how to get 4k to transmit cleanly with parsec. It looks like quality is being reduced though bandwidth should be plenty.

rajlego··on Ask HN: What's the best low latency local windows to Mac streaming solution?
fortunately, it's the other way around. I want to use windows from the hackintosh

rajlego··on Becoming a magician (2018)
Sure. From talking to author of that blog, I've roughly taken away that threaded conversation (reddit/hn), email, voice chat, instant messaging are all just chat. If you want to extend the value of information over time, you need some sort of wikipedia.

I've been leaning towards using Obsidian since linking is wonderful but I haven't figured out good workflow for using it with SuperMemo (software made by author of above blog). I'm considering just going with mediawiki, same as supermemo.guru. Plus would be that it would be super easy to edit with friends. Also been looking at some tiddlywiki based solutions as well.

rajlego··on Becoming a magician (2018)
unfortunately looks like like it's too late to edit the title
rajlego··on Becoming a magician (2018)
Have you met many people like that? For me, the person I think is most like that is Piotr Wozniak [1]. He's basically mastered everything: physiology, happiness, learning, creativity, communication. He's done it generally with global optima not local optima meaning he sacrifices things most people normally wouldn't (e.g. has no phone, only does barefoot running). Fortunately he has lots of writing on his lifestyle so I think I have a chance after a decade or two of approaching him but man, if he didn't exist there would be so many things I'd take for granted as unsolvable (enjoying exercise, being consistently happy every day, managing stress).
