raindropm··on Wikipedia is 20
I used to read book while eating(it's my lifelong habit) now I replace it with Wikipedia. Learn something new here and there everyday(mostly old history stuff)

Nothing beats its rabbit hole and its barebone-but-focused interface. It does not replace any in-depth source of any topic you want to learn, of course.

raindropm··on My Google Traffic Has Fallen to Zero
You know what you're in for, I think?

Also, if your site is thread the line of review-spam-without-actual-content-or-actual-review-site, then this bound to happened sooner or later.

raindropm··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
True. And we’re not even in the immersive ‘VR’ age of gaming.

When it come, I can see many people will face with depression because whatever they consume is too immersive.

raindropm··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
Well, that’s true. I think most of us realize that the scope of most research is super specific (with tightly control variables) and just can’t apply broadly.

Just don’t let the media see this, because that’s when it will blown out of proportion :P

raindropm··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
Last time I play Assassin's Creed:Origin, I have to stop halfway because I'm tired of all those senseless killing. I feel bad and sad for those virtual Roman soldier I've killed, how can that even happened? (P.S. I'm not the only one)

I think part of it is because videogames graphics and animation these day is so realistic(and it will keep getting more real) All the blood and gore and violence and how you kill someone are realistically depicted. Or maybe its objective clashes with my identity and values(I'm not okay running around and killing people in real life, of course)

Note that I can "kill" hundreds of infantry in Dynasty Warrior game (which is much less realistic) and doesn't feel a single thing.

I believe that what you consume, whatever it is, effect you one way or another, despite "researcher" tell you otherwise.

raindropm··on How bad is your Spotify?
Well, unfortunately no. Ratatat is my lucky find. Heard their 'Gettysburg' while watching some random gaming clip that feature their music! and they're not my usual genre I've listen to. So Google is your best friend...

Other of my fav instrumental band is CHON, but they're more of math rock and not really the same.

raindropm··on How bad is your Spotify?
Gosh I love Ratatat’s Magnifique.
raindropm··on Jetbrains founders turn billionaires without VC help

raindropm··on Johnny.Decimal
I've met your site via your comment on HN about a year ago, on the topic about organizing...something...that I can't remember now.

The idea intrigue me! It's not often you see kind of thing that seems mundane(to general interwebz population) like a system to organizing files and folder. There is some method floating around, but they either too basic or too complex for my need.

That said, back then I give Johnny Decimal a try a bit, but works took toll on me and I eventually give in to my old way of filing things. Maybe it's time to revisited. :)

raindropm··on Human Clock
I love it. Back then when internet used to be weird and fun, and not all about profit or fame...

I think most users never even heard about Adblockers or how it will improve their web browsing life considerably. It's the thing people never know they want.

On other story, I give my junior advice that she should install adblocker on her browser, her reply was: "How can I watch the commercial then?" Umm...OKAY.

My assumption:

1) people just didn't know better or

2) they actually loves those flashing ads all along

raindropm··on Ragya – Indian classical music played by time of the day
No one mention those goats herd? Just watching them grazing made me already relax. :)
raindropm··on I spent eleven years working on this Line Rider track
Nothing better than seeing people spend time doing something they love & honing their craft, for years. You can see the overflowing passion.

It's more about being fast and move on to next big things(or so they think) nowadays. That mindset never able to create this kind of art.

raindropm··on Zoomquilt (2004)
Well, it feel entitled because he mention about don't want to 'let untrusted websites run javascript in my browser'. Said untrusted website however, is the author's website. And it feel like the author need to answer these personal request.

I mean, it may technically true in every way, just not a nice way to ask for something. He can simply just ask(hell, I'd love that too) without giving his personal technical reason and it will feel a lot nicer.

Sometimes you don't have to say every single details...

P.S. I don't think OP has evil intention though. In the end it's matter of different perspective.

raindropm··on Attention Is My Most Valuable Asset for Productivity as a Software Developer
Both important. It’s just that the world today is gear toward communication to the point of overloaded your every sensory available. What left of attention are all stole by social media and their ilk. People just can’t focus anymore, and when one cannot focus, one cannot attain higher skill one wish for. That’s the point, in my opinion, of course.
raindropm··on About YouTube Rewind this year
I think this year is filled with stories to tell, in various angles. It's just, they need to change their perspective of what to 'rewind'

So many videos for them to choose from, especially video with human touch and what people did and show it on their platform in this time of pandemic.

Youtube team however, seems to obsessed with videos with most views & likes and glorifying their top creators, and intended to make it cringy as possible...so out of touch.

raindropm··on Show HN: Baller ToDo – a no-list todo app
It's new in a sense of 'something that is not yet another rigid list of tasks'

It's Eisenhower Matrix through and through, but I found draggable task dot quite refreshing.

raindropm··on Why do printers still suck?
I bought mine (Canon Laser) about what, 10 years ago? I'd say it's one of the best office appliance I bought and I think it can comfortably last my lifetime.

I print some pages about 5 times/year max. The toner that comes with it is nearly running out, but still able to print some greyish image if I want quick physical form of some files. ZERO maintenance.

and it's not even the expensive model, it's the base model, almost the cheapest. Such quality, really.

On another story, I also used to own Brother's multifunction scanner-inkjet printer. It was a nightmare.

raindropm··on Advice to my young self: forget side projects and focus on your job
Right? Maybe the speck of hostility is as little as we interpret the word 'side projects' differently and forget about other context and variable, or simple fact that not everyone have a knack on side project...I found that if you're not side project guy, then you're not, and that's fine.

I mean, I believe many people don't have side project and still have perfectly happy life.

raindropm··on Advice to my young self: forget side projects and focus on your job
Here's my experience. Until you have the luxury to pursue any side project you want, I found that side project that scratch your itch on your main job work best. You have fun with problem solving at your own pace, and also make your work life continuously a little better(because you know where your itch at, and since no one cares, so you do it yourself)

At the end of the day, you ship something useful and practical and learn something new along the way. Ain't that count?

Unless your side project = side business, now that'll be another beast.

Even something you do out of love that doesn't involve money making, you still have to think about it, find time to do it and when you can't(mostly because your main job took all your time) you will feel guilty and depressed. And the cycle continue.... seriously, I think it's worse than having no side project.

raindropm··on Fuck You Sunday
This right here. When you overloaded with a lots of things, it will take toll on your body and mind eventually. You know what's good, but you just can't bring yourself to 'just' do it. It's not fun at all.

I personally found radical change help in this case.

raindropm··on Fuck You Sunday
Hey...This is great.

I have this kind of 'fuck everything' moment from time to time. It's satisfying but not last long because the lack of further plan. Still miles better than scrolling through reddit or reading gurus advices all days without taking any action though.

I know I should make this 'spur of anger' a routine, but seriously, fuck routine for once, too.
