ragequittah··on Bernie Sanders: "AI Is a Threat to Everything the American People Hold Dear"
The way this always works in a corporation is people's jobs will be just as hard or harder and they'll hire far less people. As always happens productivity per person will skyrocket and median wages will somehow be lower.
ragequittah··on "Cognitive surrender" leads AI users to abandon logical thinking, research finds
Just a simple test for people who believe this:

Step 1) read the article

Step 2) have a frontier AI model summarize the article

Step 3) find any 'bullshit' that it comes up with

Step 4) do it 5 more times in a row because obviously the non-determinism will make it say something different each time and it should bs you at least once since it's simply a bs machine anyways

Step 5) report your findings

ragequittah··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far

ragequittah··on Why didn't AI “join the workforce” in 2025?
"Reading is the creative center of a writer’s life.” — Stephen King, On Writing

You need to design the code in order to tell the LLM how to write it. The LLM can help with this but generally it's better to have a full plan in place to give it beforehand. I've said it before elsewhere but I think this argument will eventually be similar to the people arguing you don't truly know how to code unless you're using assembly language for everything. I mean sure assembly code is better / more efficient in every way but who has the time to bother in a post-compiler world?

ragequittah··on Web development is fun again
Usually The thing you've learned after googling for half an hour is mostly that google isn't very useful for search anymore.
ragequittah··on Why didn't AI “join the workforce” in 2025?
This to me seems like saying you can learn nothing from a book unless you yourself have written it. You can read the code the LLM writes the same as you can read the code your colleagues write. Moreover you have to pretty explicitly tell it what to write for it to be very useful. You're still designing what it's doing you just don't have to write every line.
ragequittah··on The suck is why we're here
The times it's wrong has become vanishingly small. At least for the things I use it for (mostly technical). Chatgpt with extended thinking and feeding it the docs url or a pdf or 3 to start you'll very rarely get an error. Especially when compared to google / stack exchange.
ragequittah··on Web development is fun again
I imagine this same argument happening when people stopped using machine code and assembly en masse and started using FORTRAN or COBOL. You don't really know what you're doing unless you're spending the effort I spent!
ragequittah··on The suck is why we're here
Usually studying a test book is reconceptualizing it in whatever way fits the way you learn. For some people that's notes, for some it's flash cards, for some it's reading the textbook twice and they just get it.

To imagine LLMs have no use case here seems dishonest. If I don't understand a particularly hard part of the subject matter and the textbook doesn't expand on it enough you can tell the LLM to break it down further with sources. I know this works because I've been doing it with Google (slowly, very slowly) for decades. Now it's just way more convenient to get to the ideas you want to learn about and expand them as far as you want to go.

ragequittah··on Karpathy on Programming: “I've never felt this much behind”
I think this might be a big part of the problem with the conversation about AI right now. The models have become so much better in the last ~6 months in my experience and lots of people wrote them off 1-2 years ago after they couldn't do x and 'we've hit a wall' was being thrown around everywhere.
ragequittah··on All Delisted Steam Games
I just wonder why movies get away with licenses for both music and depicting cars etc. for eternity. Seems like they just added weird unnecessary rules for video games. I also imagine a situation where Stephen King has to renew with Plymouth every few years. Seems ridiculous for any other art form why is it so easily accepted for this one?
ragequittah··on Global Memory Shortage Crisis: Market Analysis
There is a small part of me that wonders if my $3000 computer is worth it when that could get me about 12 years of geforce now gaming with an updated graphic card and processor at all times. But I like to tinker so I'll probably end up spending $10k or more by the end of that 12 years instead.
ragequittah··on Dolphin Progress Report: Release 2512
It's like not understanding why with so many books / movies / music albums people choose to read or watch or listen to specific older ones.
ragequittah··on Claude Code creator says Claude wrote all his code for the last month
My experience with it is the code just wouldn't have existed in the first place otherwise. Nobody was going to pay thousands of dollars for it and it just needs to work and be accurate. It's not the backend code you give root access to on the company server, it's automating the boring aspects of the job with a basic frontend.

I've been able to save people money and time. If someone comes in later and has a more elegant solution for the same $60 effort I spent great! Otherwise I'll continue saving people money and time with my non-perfect code.

ragequittah··on TurboDiffusion: 100–200× Acceleration for Video Diffusion Models
This is also the VR killer app.
ragequittah··on The Ultimate Windows Utility (2022)
That's actually amazing. First I shudder to think of all the cruft in that install. Leftover registry settings from 2015 on. But second kudos for being able to do that. I've tried and failed about 5 times in my life at moving a windows install to another computer since Windows 95 days. I didn't think it was at all possible.
ragequittah··on Clair Obscur having its Indie Game Game Of The Year award stripped due to AI use
>Was that before or after real people had their work scraped w/out permission or acknowledgement?

Well after. Ever notice how a good game was made and then suddenly 50 like it appeared? Everyone scraped id soft's ideas and tech. Everyone followed Blizzard's ideas. The amazing thing that happened IMO is when companies started putting up patents so that such scraping couldn't be done.

One that comes to mind is the Shadow of Mordor nemesis system. Great idea, would've been neat to see in other games. Nope not allowed for 11 years. If things like this were around at the start of gaming it would likely be in a very sorry state.

ragequittah··on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features
I've been really confused as to what all the hubub is about. I think I saw the sidebar for about 4 seconds on each of my installs before I hid it forever. I tried to reenable it to see what people were complaining about but couldn't find it within 10 seconds so gave up.
ragequittah··on GPT Image 1.5
Copyright has overstepped its initial purpose by leaps and bounds because corporations make the law. If you're not cynical about how Copyright currently works you probably haven't been paying attention. And it doesn't take much to go from cynical to nihilist in this case.
ragequittah··on VS Code deactivates IntelliCode in favor of the paid Copilot
Almost nobody has this functionality on their desktop processor. I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy but there's enough real problems to yell about without making some up. The agentic AI will even be entirely opt in.
ragequittah··on YouTube's CEO limits his kids' social media use – other tech bosses do the same
The research on video games indicates that it tends to enhance certain skills like spatial awareness and reflex time. They're also pretty decent social / competitive outlets.

The research on social media indicates that it lowers attention span and increases anxiety, depression, and anger. And my personal opinion is it's the reason we're seeing crazy things that I can't fathom happening without it like the measles resurgence.

Neither should be used for 5 hours a day but the consequences don't seem comparable to me. The only place they do align is you should probably be exercising more instead.

ragequittah··on CRISPR fungus: Protein-packed, sustainable, and tastes like meat
The cow farts, the important forests being torn down far cattle, the important forests being torn down for soy beans that feed the cattle, the inhumane conditions in which the cattle are raised. The problem you dismissed is indeed far larger than the one you're worried about.
ragequittah··on GPT-5.2
Or what will often work is having the LLM break it down into simpler steps and then running them 1 by 1. They know how to break down problems fairly well they just don't often do it properly sometimes unless you explicitly prompt them to.
ragequittah··on Schizophrenia sufferer mistakes smart fridge ad for psychotic episode
That's what YouTube premium is. The fact that someone with no money gets access to all of YouTube seems like a win to me. If the only way to access was premium the world would be a worse place wouldn't it?
ragequittah··on Have I been Flocked? – Check if your license plate is being watched
Wait really? I feel like this was happening in the 90s. Now every car has a full gps spy system integrated to the point I barely trust that my conversation is private in a modern vehicle. But I guess if you think it's just your car company, Android, Apple, roadside assistance, the local police, and probably the music you're playing that can pin your location you're probably ok.

I know exactly how my firewall and router are configured though. I didn't do it blindly and would often hone what the AI gave me. I can see the argument if someone did do it blindly, but I'd wager very few are.

I didn't have to very much because pfsense that I've been using forever and opnsense are basically the same, but if I wasn't sure on why I was setting something the way I was setting it i would ask for clarification with sources. This just amounts to an extremely powerful google search tailored exactly to my situation.

I think everyone pictures ai users as drooling idiots who copy / paste without thinking. While I'm sure that exists you can use AI to learn and it works quite well. To me it feels like how a librarian might feel when people started using the internet to learn because if you don't use the dewey decimal system you aren't really learning anything.

ragequittah··on Ironwood, our latest TPU
This is why I used it for something I already knew about I just needed clarification on. I could tell when it was wrong and it just wasn't often enough to worry about. I was wrong far more often than it was. And Google searches would be wrong way more often than me.
ragequittah··on Ironwood, our latest TPU
Nobody is writing a wall of text about opnsense rules or unbound checkboxes. I already knew the fundamentals I just wanted to get it done. I'm not a novice I've been using firewalls forever. Xcp-ng for half a decade. I just needed clarification on the differences.
ragequittah··on Ironwood, our latest TPU
I set up opnsense and xcp-ng. The idea thay I now don't understand those front ends is absurd. I'd already learned the underlying networking and Linux stuff years ago I just needed to know where the right nibs are.

And you can easily learn deeply with AI just ask it deeper questions. I do this all the time. I did this several times in this network setup when I did encounter something I didn't understand. If you aren't curious you won't learn, if you are you'll learn faster than any other method out there.

ragequittah··on Ironwood, our latest TPU
Openai doesn't care about my iot rules. They aren't going to hack my small home network. It's like saying the people who wrote the guide to set up an iot and guest network know your firewall rules if you follow the guide. Sure. I'd wager they probably know most of the rules for my admin lan too because they're self evident. And turns out most people configure unbound and dnsmasq in the same way too.

Moreover the fact that the AI knows my setup now makes it effortless to troubleshoot.
