rafram··on The August 17 outage
github-actions: "If you need a paragraph-long comment to justify why the workaround is OK, the code is wrong — fix the code"

robobun: "The ordering is load-bearing: reclaiming before this block made is_dead_request true and hung a parked textStream read (caught by body.test.ts in CI). The comment pins that constraint."

Ah, well, if something is load-bearing, then I guess that settles it. Need a comment to pin that constraint, in case a read is parked. These are words that normal humans commonly use in these ways.

(Always striking how much Claude obsesses over the minutiae of method contracts and side effects, exhaustively documenting them in comments. It’s much happier figuring out how to reorder some method calls with nonobvious side effects so the code works than it is refactoring them not to do unexpected things!)

> there is a by default unset shortcut to switch between windows of the same application. I set it to command tilde.

It's set to that by default.

rafram··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
The funniest part is that that project's own readme includes lots of good Claudish.

> If CLAUDISH_MODEL names a model you have not pulled, every rewrite is skipped — with the one-time notice above.

rafram··on Browser De-Slop
I imagine you're trying to use it in ways that it's just not designed for. Cmd-`, Cmd-Tab, and Mission Control (Ctrl/Cmd-F3 or three-finger swipe up/down) are powerful enough to do most tasks, especially combined with automatic window tiling.

Downsizing (but still owning), rentals, the suburbs, Texas, Atlanta, or nowhere, if the parents pass away and the kids don't want the house.
rafram··on An American Mosaic (interactive map of ancestry census data)
Many US cities have high rates of homeownership by non-white families who bought during/after White Flight. This means that there are a lot of minority homeowners who have significant real estate equity (often inherited) but lack other assets. Now the trend is reversing and white people are moving back into city centers, often renting/buying in working-class neighborhoods that had mainly been populated by minority groups since the ‘60s (aka gentrification). Sellers want to convert real estate into cash, and buyers want relatively cheap urban real estate and have cash. So the highest turnover is going to be in majority-minority areas.

(Another factor is rezoning/redevelopment, which is also putting pressure on people in some more heavily minority neighborhoods to sell.)

All of this also explains why property tax reform is such a thorny issue in cities like New York.

Another day, another (admittedly very cool) NYT map that uses OSM data in its basemap without credit :'(

Most of these are not good choices for most people.

And "I use a real operating system" alongside a list of seven different non-obvious and seemingly arbitrary config locations is pretty funny.

rafram··on Opus 5.0 drives incoherence into the stratosphere
Not any engineer, but Boris Cherny, the head of the Claude Code project! With a nice "[robot emoji] Generated with Claude Code" signature. Normally it would be nice to get a response from the head of the project, but somehow Anthropic manages to make it insulting.

I wonder if he manually directed CC to write a response, or if even that part is autonomous.

The Apple Watch is quite accurate (according to Apple's own research, at least), and it doesn't guess or map to typical patterns: https://www.apple.com/health/pdf/Estimating_Sleep_Stages_fro...

You lived in SF and never once went to LA?!
rafram··on GPT 5.6 Sol is the best "vision" model OpenAI ever released
I mean they all look like generic, annoying SaaS landing pages/overwrought dashboards, not that they’re simple and functional.

rafram··on Show HN: Saggar, a Mac terminal that keeps sessions and your attention organized
> What says no is the account: nothing pairs that is not signed in as you.

I am begging Claude to stop treating the English language this way.

rafram··on AI-Generated GitHub Copilot “Autofix” Allowed Compromise of Snowflake's Jira
No. A Snowflake maintainer opened a PR, Copilot suggested a change (introducing a vulnerability), the maintainer accepted and committed it to their PR, and another Snowflake maintainer approved and merged the PR.
rafram··on GPT 5.6 Sol is the best "vision" model OpenAI ever released
Of course. It’s OK, but it tends to generate very cliched “AI” UIs with little originality. Despite the skill spending a lot of time coaching the model into avoiding that!
rafram··on Incident with Github.com

Largest shareholder (27%), not majority.

Have you actually read the frontend design skill? It’s placebo at best. Very short and barely focused on design: https://github.com/anthropics/skills/blob/main/skills/fronte...

I have to be honest, to someone who knows nothing about you, this is all a little concerning.
rafram··on Asus Bike Booster
It may just be that I’m comparing to the Bay Area, but I’ve never been that concerned about bike theft in NYC. If you lock your bike with a good lock and leave it somewhere with plenty of foot traffic, it’s quite unlikely to be stolen. Most people don’t even bother locking the wheels! Just a U-lock through the frame.

I’m having a hard time figuring out if this State of Utopia thing is tongue-in-cheek or serious.
rafram··on Claude: System Prompts
> Claude avoids saying "genuinely", "honestly", or "straightforward". Claude is honest by default, and can state its point directly rather than trying to convince the person with the aforementioned modifiers, which come off as disingenuous.

Hah! No it doesn’t.

rafram··on Run Android ARM64 VR APKs on Apple Vision Pro
It's just the "buy your mom an iPhone" [1] mentality. Apple machines are good, widely available, and start at a reasonable price point - developers should quit moaning and buy a Mac if they want to develop for iOS that badly.

Not saying this is a correct point of view, but I do think it's widely held at Apple, and there's little impetus for them to build developer tools for other platforms because of it.

rafram··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
Transit (transitapp.com) supports setting your walking speed, which is essentially this by proxy, and it's a great app.
rafram··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
This is overstated. At least as of 2017, Americans walked about 93% as much as people in France, for example, and a little more than people in Portugal or Greece.

rafram··on Poles of Inaccessibility in the San Gabriel Mountains
This isn't really a path, and certainly not an official trail. It's a use trail [1] that should probably get (edit: now has) an informal=yes tag [2]. I think it still counts!
