radix07··on Exploring different microcontrollers less than $1
I would love to see open source hardware take off at that level! You do see plenty of projects at the PCB level, which is nice and likely as far as most people will ever need to go. The price point of a small custom PCB is actually very reasonable now and usually easier to buy than rolling your own anymore.

But until you can spin your own silicon with the ease of something like a 3D printer or buy custom low cost/quantity silicon, it doesn't matter what your open source HW design does if you don't have the money or a business to create and distribute it. That's one thing that is very hard to do with something physical and why opensource has worked so well in the software community.

There does seem to be some stuff being done here using FPGAs... But they are still a rather expensive way to go just to drop a custom architecture on for now.

In the meantime, there is still plenty of software work to do to make a truly useful and professional grade opensouce stack that you can develop on the chips we have.

radix07··on Exploring different microcontrollers less than $1
Open source hardware in the microcontroller world isn't quite as big of a deal as it is in the software world. While it would be great to see the processor architecture and all, I would much rather have an ARM that I know works and won't have to look at. I believe modern Arduinos are going to Cortex processors which are ARM as well, so I don't think the open source claim is what keeps Arduino hardware going. It is most likely going to be ease of use, accessibility, community and the tools.
radix07··on Show HN: Vehicle Detection – using machine learning and computer vision
Looks like you can get a dedicated display with the Varia for an additional $100. $300 total is still cheaper than a GoPro, Raspi, and all the additional stuff you will need to make it work together...

radix07··on Show HN: Vehicle Detection – using machine learning and computer vision
By all means I respect wanting to roll your own version of this. But if you would like to buy something to detect vehicles from your rear, there is something that already exists and is used commonly by cyclist. You may however need a bike computer as well, so it might get a bit expensive...

radix07··on Scipy 1.0 released
Sadly not everyone can live in a *nix environment. Supporting Windows developers is a pretty damn big lynchpin...
radix07··on Ask HN: How does one overcome the need for instant gratification?
Think I remember seeing this get roasted on Shark Tank...
radix07··on GitPitch – Markdown Presentations for Devs on GitHub and GitLab
Interesting, did not realize that was possible! Had to dig into pandoc a bit to find much information about presentations however as I have never actually read the manual to use it. Reference I found was page 60 of the pdf manual: https://pandoc.org/MANUAL.pdf
radix07··on Tmux and Vim – better together
Basically I am not able to compile my particular codebase in clang or gcc too easily since it's an embedded system. But many other IDEs have no problem inferring autocompletion without requiring compilation. YouCompleteMe itself was a bit of an issue as I have to develop in Windows and it's not quite as well supported.
radix07··on Tmux and Vim – better together
Have you actually tried to get YouCompleteMe[1] to work for C/C++ autocomplete? It's a huge PIA. Autocomplete just works in VSCode and many other IDEs once you point them at the right directory.

radix07··on How “engagement” made the web a less engaging place
Then you should go to slashdot, they have been doing that for awhile...
radix07··on Tencent buys 5% of Tesla
The ZTR is just a test platform to ensure our motor drives can handle the load swings. We specialize in the power and drive systems, so we likely won't be making complete mowers ourselves.

All of those things are certainly doable, although we will be pretty much eliminating the hydraulic system, so the PTO and loader might need to be thought out a little differently.

radix07··on Tencent buys 5% of Tesla
It is coming soon! Here is a Hybrid ZTR prototype my company has been working on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J34KU9OG9M8
radix07··on My CAD software called home, and no-one answered, so it shut down
What do you suggest as a viable open source alternative for CAD?
radix07··on How to Bullet Journal
That's why I just keep a dot grid pocket book with me. When I have something important to note I just add it. I don't schedule anything, just jot out my ideas/plans/todos when they come to me.
radix07··on Ask HN: How do you take notes (useful note-taking strategies)?
This is the way to go. I use a small Bullet Journal that I can carry in my pocket every day. I found Field Notes were expensive, so I use a Fold Journal (http://www.foldjournal.com). They are similar, have dot grid paper, and are way cheaper.
radix07··on A Tour of Python’s Data Visualization Landscape, Including Ggplot and Altair
These are all nice for static visualizations. But the only thing I have found that can stream lots of data on the fly is PyQtGraph. Doesn't look the prettiest, but is very powerful and fast. Although I wish it was more intuitive to setup sometimes, it can be tricky to tell when to use Qt stuff or the plotting libraries as they are pretty closely coupled.

radix07··on Ask HN: What is your favourite stack for small personal projects?
If you don't need a database or a dynamic interface, I have a personal site running with Jekyll. It's static and cost a few cents a month to run on Amazon S3 (until I actually get some traffic). Github Pages is also an option if you are going this route.
radix07··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2016)
SEEKING WORK - Location Wisconsin/Illinois/Remote

Electrical/Software Engineer - Looking to get started with some side gigs doing whatever I can.

I have a site that I am still working on (embeddeddatasolutions.com) Which goes over a lot of what I am capable of and looking to do.

Basically anything with Python, SQL, C++ and anything that may interface with an embedded system with some minor Hardware design. I can also do Flask sites, but I am by no means a web designer.

Thank you for your time.

radix07··on Qt Quick Controls 2.1 and Beyond
Yeah... A lawyer would never do that...
radix07··on Qt Quick Controls 2.1 and Beyond
Yeah, for a large company I would think the license would have been nothing compared to paying the lawyers to investigate the LGPL changes.
radix07··on Qt Quick Controls 2.1 and Beyond
That sounds concerning, I would really like to know more about what that really means.

I briefly started investigating the changes for Qt 5.7 before I started having flashbacks of trying to figure out all this LGPL stuff again. Does not seem to be any less confusing...

radix07··on Announcing Visual Studio “15” Preview 5
I hear ya, everyone has their ways that work for them. Once I see wine come up, I usually start to glaze over. Although honestly I still haven't given wine a fair try yet.

Don't get me wrong I love Linux and really wish I could use it as my main machine, but there are just some tools and interfaces I have to use on Windows since I do some hardware work as well with proprietary tools and all their own EULAs..

However the more I have been getting into web development lately the more Windows has become a pain to use for some tools and libraries.

So I just use VMs, Rasperry Pi's and pretend occasionally. Tried Cygwin for awhile, but it just not the same.

Conemu definitely rocks! However I somehow managed to merge the Windows Terminal and Cygwin in the same terminal by default which I have been unable to figure out... But at least I can use ls/dir interchangeably now, so I don't see it as a bad thing.

radix07··on Announcing Visual Studio “15” Preview 5
Stuff like this is why I still can't bring myself to use Linux as my main development machine. That and some special tools that only work in Windows.

Lately however I have been developing like a hipster using Vim for all of my Python stuff.

radix07··on Announcing Visual Studio “15” Preview 5
If this make VS significantly faster and lighter, it might be the only thing keeping me from using it full time for Python development (that and Linux systems). It might actually be one of the best IDE's out there for Python. Autocomplete just works, vim bindings, debugging/stepping through code is easy as pie, pip and virtual environments all integrated...

radix07··on Qt Quick Controls 2.1 and Beyond
Looks like PySide2 is PySide for Qt5. Seems they are putting some effort back into development. https://wiki.qt.io/PySide2
radix07··on Qt Quick Controls 2.1 and Beyond
It would be awesome to have a clean way to develop on Android with Python. Technically it is possible and has been done with Necessitas, but would be awesome if they can get it streamlined into their mobile Qt stuff.
radix07··on Qt Quick Controls 2.1 and Beyond
It's confusing as hell what you can actually do with it... Even talking to Qt sales, it is a little fuzzy on what is allowable or not. But in general yes, you can create commercial products as long as you don't modify their stuff or link to it improperly or look at it wrong.
