"Primo Levi was working in a varnish factory. He was a chemist, and he was fascinated by the fact that the varnish recipe included a raw onion. What could it be for? No one knew; it was just part of the recipe. So he investigated, and eventually discovered that they had started throwing the onion in years ago to test the temperature of the varnish: if it was hot enough, the onion would fry."
I worked there as a product designer for a couple of years, I now work on even more data dense UI in the cyber security domain, e.g. https://elastio.com/blog/cyber-recovery/three-clicks-to-rans...
As with almost all UI design the answer is "It Depends". If you could provide a little more context around the domain you're working in I'm sure I could point you at some specific examples
He has strong opinions strongly held but as someone who's designed industrial strength UIs for over 20 years (networking CLIs & UIs, CAD modeling/simulation, Devops dashboards, cybersecurity tooling) I've read all his books, attended his lectures... he's a king with no clothes
I can see arguments for both sides. Your point and then the hidden failure modes without central observability and ownership. Nothing exists in isolation.
Need a BT speaker? That'll be $550 thank you, btw the speaker cones are completely exposed because it looks cool.
I think the point of the article is cordless is good and after some major advances away from nicad and brushed motors, things have pretty much plateaued.
GO TEAM RED!!!
Regulation isn't stiffer penalties alone, it's oversight.
If I have to pass 2 checks vs 1, the incentive to fuck around decreases.
I get the feeling bikes in the last 5 years have turned into investment vehicles (pun intended) like rare bottles of wine and art. Often by people who have no personal interest in the chosen market, just a place to park money (again with the puns)
(I see what I did there (o;)
About the ECU. Bikes are becoming increasingly hobbled by emissions compliant ECUs. The aftermarket ECU options allow you to tune the bike the way you want. I'm not talking diesel-gate here either. My Honda ECU was getting me 40mpg, my aftermarket is getting 50-60 mpg but with maybe higher CO2 per gallon??? I dont understand what the rules/laws are optimising for?
Fortunately there's a constant flow of user friendly "low end" bikes coming out of Japan, India and China.
There's two words you must learn when talking about UI design - "It Depends".
The one general rule I will state that guides towards using a modal is if the user needs to stay within the context of the originating page and they must return to that page as part of the workflow that launched the modal. But there's also edge cases to this.

The flip side of efficiency if the workforce headcount remains constant is over capacity, which is a downward force on earning potential.
'left wing policies' are typically social safety nets (healthcare, housing etc). You're describing failed government, left or right.
fwiw, google maps has download & offline functionality. Click your profile icon top right and select the area you want offline. I use it all the time for backcountry hiking (along with OSM apps) and going abroad where I dont have data.
The Pixel 6 is an unmitigated clusterfuck. GPS/Maps locking up is the worst. Either wont load or will lock up during a trip and you will miss a turn. Try rebooting a phone while you're alone on a motorway, then having to type in your route again - super dangerous.
I've had the camera (video) lock up mid scene. Focus locks up. Fingerprint recognition is a fail 25-50% of the time.
These have been known issues since release, I made the now incorrect assumption these were natural bugs that would be fixed over time.
Pixel 6 is the last phone from Google I will own. Not sure I want to jump to iOS yet but things are looking increasingly bleak in the Android garden
To be respectfully blunt "the responsibility of designers to the end users of their work."
No, it's our job to make the user's goals as seamless as possible - within the functional constraints of the business. If that business is to fuck users privacy over, we must operate within that overarching environment or GTFO.
To be clear, I dont understand how conscientious UXer's function at a place like Facebook, unless the plot of Servance is a reality?
After a long road trip when they're farking around in the back of the car I'll start throwing down some dad jokes. They soon plead for me to stop.
There's something agonizing about processing a good Dad joke, it's now become torture for them. The deeper and more twisted the pun the better.
Maybe I'm about to reach Peak Dad?
