radio4fan··on Show HN: Embeddable Visitor Maps
Doesn't seem to work for me. Just shows one marker on each of the maps (none of which are in the same continent as my location).

Won't chrismacnaughton.com fall foul of GMaps usage limits?

Like the idea though...

radio4fan··on Lunch and dinner with Julian Assange, in prison
No, I absolutely agree that would be a sensible and possible option, and I've read that the Swedish police have done it before in other recent cases.

I've not heard any compelling explanations why this hasn't been attempted, though IMO, Assange would be a fool to agree to it -- guilty or innocent.

On the other hand, there's little doubt that the attempted extradition procedure has correctly followed current UK law: it went all the way to the Supreme Court, and he was represented by absolutely top-class lawyers. So Sweden has the right to do what they're doing.

People have been extradited from the UK on 'European Arrest Warrants' for crimes such as drink-driving and theft of a piglet, with no prima facie evidence required.

To be fair to the Swedish government, they can't offer a guarantee like this. Assange and his lawyers are taking advantage of this fact.

According to Swedish law, any application that comes in in the future has to be dealt with in court.

The government can't give guarantees that it will ignore the law in some hypothetical future situation. After all, the US hasn't asked for his extradition (yet).

FTA:

"I’d been told he might be heavy weather. Fame is a terrible burden, and understandably the famous must find ways of dealing with sycophants, detractors and intruders."

Well he certainly had to deal with a sycophant that day.

"Julian Assange could be described as the Tom Paine of the early 21st century."

Seriously?

radio4fan··on The “It” Crowd Doesn’t Like Me and I Finally Don’t Care
That's amazing! I snipe at link to a post which happens to be written by a woman, and you conclude that I'm sexist and a racist to boot.

Do you also read tea leaves?

radio4fan··on The “It” Crowd Doesn’t Like Me and I Finally Don’t Care
Well this makes sense to me in a way that the post didn't. I didn't identify 'tech' as meaning 'VC ruling class'. I guess I'm just obtuse.

What is this mysterious drivel?

Who is brianvan5155 and why hasn't he made any comments?

How has this made it to the front page?

What can it all mean?

radio4fan··on Why Developers Don't Want to Work on Your Idea (2011)
IME, that's pretty much all of them.

But then I think that nearly everyone has a tendency to think that anything they don't fully understand must be simple.

You don't have to hang around here or on Slashdot for long to see that programmers suffer from this too...

radio4fan··on Ask HN: What programs to write?
I got a great deal of fun and benefit from an old copy of Dietel's "C: How to program" (seems that recent editions have C++ in it too now, so it may have changed a lot).

Takes you through writing an interpreter and then a compiler for a toy basic-like language.

radio4fan··on From AS3 to Haxe
In the past I've had to build minor widgets for the Flash runtime like a chromeless video player, or a 'sound manager', and Haxe has worked out great.

A 'text-editor and compiler' environment, no licence fees, and none of the battling with the timeline that I have to do when I work in Flash. I'm a Haxe novice, but still found it much easier than Flash (with which I've got a fair bit of experience).

Not saying it's better in all cases than using Flash, but it has suited my needs much better.

Did you try background-position: top center; on the body element?

Works better for unusual size windows (IMO).

radio4fan··on This is not an image. It's an HTML table.
I don't know about that, you know.

Just because there's a minor zooming bug in iOS, I wouldn't say your iPad is totally unusable.

What's the betting that the developers brought up the plaintext password problem at the time and were overruled?

I've lost this argument with PHBs in the past. They want to be able to send password 'reminders'. Sometimes they want to be able to look up users' passwords too.

Once they've made the decision to misfeature like this, nothing will change their mind: that would show weakness or fallibility.

I bet there's a developer somewhere in the UK right now who's glowing with a warm sense of I-told-you-so.

radio4fan··on Ecuador grants Julian Assange asylum
> He was never "given permission to leave".

In the London extradition court case, the lawyer for the Swedish authorities (Clare Montgomery) admitted giving Assange permission to leave:

'She said Mr. Assange's Swedish lawyer, Bjorn Hurtig, was told on Sept. 15 that his client was "not subject to any restraint and could leave Sweden."'

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870442220457612...

The authorities were in full possession of the facts of the case at this time.

Then -- weeks later -- they changed their minds.

> There are transcripts of his lawyer setting up the 2nd interview with the authorities.

Montgomery -- Sweden's counsel, remember -- also said that during this conversation, his lawyer said he was unable to contact Assange. Is that in the transcript?

> And furthermore: What is your point?

My point is that the accusation that he fled Sweden is not an established fact.

> Politically motivated or not, the police are engaged in an investigation.

You really don't think it makes any difference if it's politically motivated? No equal access to justice regardless of political opinions?

This is what you are missing.

If everything that was 'legal' was in black and white as you suggest, there would be no need of lawyers or appeal courts.

Except of course the ongoing grand jury in Virginia.

> The Swedish police want to talk to him. He fled the country before his interview.

Assange is transparently a scumbag at best, and rapist at worst, but this isn't true.

He was given permission to leave Sweden: the authorities had finished with him. They changed their minds weeks later.

And they can talk to him as much as they like. In London. Even in the Ecuadorean embassy. He's offered this much many times.

He cooperated, and now it's escalated due to political motivation.

How is this so hard to understand?

But America is not well known for extending more -- never mind equal -- rights to non-citizens than to citizens, despite the clear intentions of the authors of the Bill of Rights.
radio4fan··on Why Google Dropped My Drake Review
The Hanlon's razor compatible explanation is that they just searched for 'drake take care' and reported the results.
radio4fan··on On Patents
Interestingly, the Dyson design was based on an existing cyclone system widely used to separate out dust and particles in industrial settings. The innovation was using the process in a domestic vacuum cleaner.

So it's not too far removed from the "thing-that-already-exists but on the internet" patents which are a large part of the problem, or the "thing-that-already-exists but on a mobile" patent which is biting Notch's ass at the moment.

Not that I'm saying Dyson's patents are invalid, nor that his designs haven't improved the state of the art in several fields, but he didn't invent the cyclone technology in a... vacuum.

radio4fan··on Do You Have This Wicked Urge To Go Shoot Many People? I Have Some Advice.
Good advice.

Except for the bit at the end where he advises you to make a false police report.

Check with local police, as they may organise free destruction of unwanted weapons.

radio4fan··on Micro-apartments next for S.F.?
290 sq ft is about 27 sq m, which is about normal for a studio here in Lyon, France.

http://seloger.com has 2700+ apartments in central Paris alone which are smaller than 27 sq m.

I have no opinion on whether it would be good for SF.

Smallest I can find on seloger in Paris is 86 sq ft, which does seem a bit on the small side...

radio4fan··on PHP is much better than what you think
This comment completely describes my situation.

PHP is like javascript: I use it not because it's good, but because it's what's available.

People can bitch about PHP as much as they like, but my project for today is hosted on a server running PHP 5.2.4. I don't even have shell access; only FTP.
