radicalcentrist··on Nixos-unstable’s ISO_minimal.x86_64-Linux is 100% reproducible
Reproducibility is necessary, but unfortunately not sufficient, to stop a "Trusting Trust" attack. Nixpkgs still relies on a bootstrap tarball containing e.g. gcc and binutils, so theoretically such an attack could trace its lineage back to the original bootstrap tarball, if it was built with a compromised toolchain.
radicalcentrist··on Designing a better strcpy
Are there any recommended libraries for doing this, if I'd like to migrate my C codebase?
radicalcentrist··on How counting neutrons explains nuclear waste
I believe breeder reactors can create fuel from U-238.

radicalcentrist··on Garry Kasparov launches a community-first chess platform
> "I was so happy because it was the first time where we could see chess as a positive factor," he said. "We had so many years with chess being seen as potential destruction and something that could push kids to the dark area of psychological instability."

This surprises me, could someone expand a bit on this? I've only ever heard chess referred to positively in popular culture. I would assume most non chess players' understanding of chess is based on idioms like "thinking N moves ahead" and "playing 4D chess."

(I'm not sure I'd consider Beth Harmon a shining example of psychological stability either...)

radicalcentrist··on Show HN: Mirage – a social, lighthearted, storytelling-focused roleplaying game
Wow, this looks really cool! I love the idea of a distillation of DnD down to just the fun bits at the core.

I enjoyed skimming some of the adventures, but I'd really like to see a play-by-play account of an example scenario. It would be great to see the procedure of gameplay, and the GM and each player's thoughts and decisions, to solidify how Mirage works in practice.

radicalcentrist··on French judge rules GPL license must be enforced via contract law, not copyright
I think the title is unintentionally misleading some of the commenters here because of ambiguous wording. My understanding is that it should be read as "French judge rules GPL license to be (inapplicable in French copyright court)" rather than "French judge rules GPL license to be inapplicable (in French copyright court)". I.e. the license does not apply within the bounds of copyright court - rather than a broader ruling of inapplicability issued from a copyright court. I may be wrong though, this is just how I interpreted the article.

radicalcentrist··on Ethnic violence in Ethiopia has been supercharged by hate speech on Facebook
I see what you're getting at, but I wouldn't consider this very compelling evidence. Plenty has happened in the past ten years that isn't attributable to social media.
radicalcentrist··on Control a website by raising your hand – JavaScript library for hand detection
Not to mention that the author has apparently licensed this as GPL2, yet posts only the minified JS and claims it is "locked" to only localhost...
