r_lee··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
You're so right, he should've written:

"I think we as humans (I'm saying we as in probably the majority from my point of view and understanding of what the majority of people who visit this website likely think about this and how their ethical viewpoints likely align with my opinion that I am about to present however there may be a minority or some part of people that do not agree with what I am about to write therefore it is crucial that I make this clear before I go on with my point here)"

r_lee··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
not to mention that ASML is likely majority owned by Americans
r_lee··on An agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot
I think it wouldn't be too unreasonable for openAI to have a command center type of thing where they have people monitoring these runs where that wouldn't be such a problem. plus I feel like false positives aren't that likely if you'd actually run the reports by a capable model first which I'm guessing is they're doing
r_lee··on An agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot
it's really interesting how they seemingly don't have a way to pause runs? like a P0 that would page an employee, shouldn't that pause the run and then make it into a decision on whether to let it continue vs that whole "run was killed" 2.5 hours later?
r_lee··on DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec)
I'd say it's cool that they're openly writing about it and how they run their workloads. shows a nice window into how these things are actually deployed at scale.

it also shows how much density you can get easily from a single core if you wanted to replicate this

r_lee··on DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec)
if it's agentic stuff, they likely aren't hammering a core constantly and they will maybe sit idle quite often between model requests, so it makes sense. I do wonder how much memory they allocate to each one though.

it's just very efficient use of shared cores that is required to make these kinds of workloads cost efficient

r_lee··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
I've had bad experiences with gpt 6 luna, but 5.6 luna worked real nicely with e.g React, you can do a back n forth and it'll work like a teammate vs just a "done!" where you then have to clean everything up afterwards
r_lee··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
it seems like most of the recent posts on Tao's blog are not actually Tao's?
r_lee··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
and how will that pay rent?

like, how are people not getting this? is everyone here just living off their capital gains or something and that's it?

r_lee··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
I feel like so many people here are part of that crowd. going on about how it's like humanities and how it's super valuable and those who are seeking to get paid are just missing the point

how is it even possible to think like that? or maybe it's some kind of coping mechanism

r_lee··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
I don't think anyone hates all of AI except a minority

and even if you would hate AI, you don't really have a choice anymore since employers will expect you to be more productive due to it

but I definitely see a bunch of hate towards the dystopian aspects of it and as mentioned before, the whole slop thing and how you see AI slop everywhere now. it definitely evokes a very negative feeling in me when I see something like that

r_lee··on Google's first Suncatcher orbital data center test launches October 1
> progress will likely only accelerate

I'm guessing this is part of the whole idea; to get data before its actually doable, and the cost is worth the early data to help with future development

r_lee··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
apps, not the actual devices by the supplier
r_lee··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
because nobody says "I hate x y and z uses of AI", especially the youth.

like with that logic, everybody loves AI and all the uses of it because they're not being specific enough in their speech

r_lee··on Silicon Valley 'sex assault list' with 'over 100' names circulated
because it's not as common as people being cancelled over this stuff. your life isn't ruined instantly if you get accused of theft
r_lee··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
I'm not one bit surprised that you'd use the path of least resistance to do some essay that you could care less about.

hating AI slop overall like seeing it in shirts or something like that is not performative.

r_lee··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
there's no way you actually didn't understand what I meant right?

using LLMs to learn for example is not the same as enjoying AI slop posters/art etc

r_lee··on CVE-2025-13032: Entering and Breaking the Avast Antivirus Sandbox Part 2
how? if there's hundreds of employees and one of them downloads something that's detectable, you've now prevented a disaster that otherwise wouldn't have
r_lee··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
that's not "performative" though?

and how is it "half-understood"? it's simply not the same thing

r_lee··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
no? it's because nobody likes AI slop
r_lee··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
from my memory, the OS on Nokias was just fine. it was great. it just wasn't a smartphone OS

which makes sense because they had these half button half touchscreen hybrid phones

the internet browsing features were something akin to like paid phone numbers which you'd avoid using because it was like special stuff

it wasn't first class in any way, it was perpetually stuck in the past. and as you can see, their entire business model was based on iterating on the same thing in a million ways, so there's no way they were gonna do something from the ground up to focus on a first class experience for one form factor which could support 3rd party developers etc.

r_lee··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
no, if they were like Nokia, they'd be desperately trying to make everything and new versions of things

instead they're refining their existing products until they can come up with a hit. although I'm not sure the iPhone Duo is gonna be a hit

there's simply not that much innovation going on these days, there was a lot more low-hanging fruit in the early 2000s

r_lee··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
point is they weren't pushing the technology, they were pushing the existing form factor, not thinking ahead.

I could be wrong, but I recall an exec at one of their events on stage doubling down and saying they know better than Apple - that people want buttons (or something like that), which basically means their decline was inevitable due to the culture

r_lee··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
I think browsing this gives you a good idea of why Nokia failed. they really thought they had it all figured out and it was now time to lay back and just try out random shit.

they would never have the same kind of focus or philosophy as Apple, nor the willpower to pivot to real smartphones and a proper OS for them
