If you need someone to tell you whether eggs are going to kill you, then you are beyond help. What you are complaining about is not academia, but the reporting on academia. Most institutions hardly even blink when a study about the health benefits/detriments of eggs, coffee, or the like is published. You’d change my mind, perhaps, if you told me that you actually followed multiple scientific journals.

It remains to be seen whether most software developers value the services that Wolfram provides enough to swallow the proprietary pill.

I don’t think OP is axe-grinding, just responding to Wolfram’s naïve sentiment of “I don’t get how anyone could possibly see any downsides to this!”

I don’t think being forced to upgrade is as much of a concern as receiving incompatible upgrades, or not receiving anything at all. Remember, Wolfram is trying to reach industry here, not just individual software developers.

Using a Mac. Can confirm that almost everything that’s actually built upon by other stuff is open-source. Even much of Apple’s development software is open-source.

How so? I know Haskell has pretty extensive type inference, but I’m not sure exactly how it relates here.

I don’t want to minimize any of the work being put into this, which is clearly not a trivial amount, and is actually quite interesting and useful for learning purposes. That being said, I have some blunt criticism to offer that I hope provides some context as to what kind of tooling is useful in this space:

I’m not sure I would prefer this over a different (probably visual) tool that facilitates, e.g., ensuring that a given set of notes fits into a measure, or checking which notes are played simultaneously. It also frustratingly does not take advantage of any of Clojure’s functional affordances, such as the ability to transform data programmatically, and does introduce global state, harkening back to C’s misplaced notion of “macros”. Not much here seems Clojure-specific other than the sometimes confusing dynamic behavior, such as implicit list interpolation, and JS interop. All that said, I hope this becomes more than just a Lisp-based clone of an existing format with mature tooling: http://lilypond.org/text-input.html

I’m not really sure what you mean by “the rules for the ordering of inline side effects”. I think they’re usually relatively simple to understand, such as with postfix and prefix incrementation operators; but I’m sure there are other cases I’m not aware of. Care to expand on these?
