r-w··on This website has 81% battery power remaining
> Is there even a subset of hardware configurations for which this is the case with Linux?

That's not how cross-platform, cross-application software works. Linux is used for everything. Every other change for power efficiency will get balanced out by another change for raw performance.

I was just thinking of that! It definitely presents some difficult UI challenges though… May I ask your thoughts on resolving those?

That isn't obvious to me. Why remove things that were helping the minority and not hindering the majority?

I have never seen "swell" used that way. I thought you were saying your battery was making the entire casing swell.
r-w··on Ask HN: What is the best programming book you've read?
Hm. Maybe that's because the concerns must be balanced differently for different applications?

We're talking about small, quick operations supporting a synchronous, interactive user interface here. When it comes to performance, asymptotics aren't everything.

Then w.r.t. quality of results, you're just using Bing: https://help.duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/results/so...

> I believe a search engine that ignores results based on superficial and aesthetic qualities like "modern web design" would be even worse in that regard

I think you may be confused. No one's trying to replace Google here. The idea is to have another option for when Google craps out on you. And if you find that Google almost always craps out on you, then hey, maybe you're in the 5–10% who have just found their new default search engine :-)

I was going to write a response, but this comment I found further down the page sort of communicates my perspective: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28552078

But I mean come on, they're Microsoft. If they really wanted filesystem access to be efficient across systems, we'd have it by now. Although convenient, I doubt that's on their list of primary motivations for doing this.
r-w··on Claimed AT&T hack of 70M customer records including SSN, name, address
This is the problem with having the public and private key be the same. Anyone should be able to access your public key, and anyone you deal with should be able to ask you to use your private key to verify your identity. The problem is when that entire process is reduced to "give us the number the government uses to ensure you're you. Don't worry, we won't use it to convince anyone else we're you ;) Or leak it so anyone else can do the same ;) ;) ;)"

Who’s “we”? Everyone has their own standards, and they’re in their right to stick by those standards. It’s whether “we” accommodate those standards that makes the difference.

Does anyone know of some good readings about this? Seems intuitively true to me, but I haven't seen it discussed in-depth as a standalone topic.
