qzcx··on Why ClojureScript Matters
The one thing that I don't understand about his argument is why having dedicated QA is bad? Having QA doesn't mean you shouldn't test your own code, but you have blind spots when it comes to testing your own code. It is easy to make assumptions about how your code should work.
qzcx··on SSD Prices in a Free Fall
Not killed off so much as delayed due to lack of ability to mass produce at a decent price point so far. It is far from scrapped. It was over hyped and optimistic to begin with. It just hit the reality that it has several decades of work to catch up on to be on the same page as current tech.
qzcx··on Preferences for Trains vs. Buses
Most train systems I've taken don't have to stop at stop lights, but the buses I've ridden, even with a dedicated lane, still stop at the lights. This means twice as many stops and starts. Big negative in my mind. But then again, maybe this is another small improvement which could be made.
qzcx··on Gallium Nitride Power Transistors Priced Cheaper Than Silicon
Thats part of my other questions. How small is the current GaN technology? How much can it build on silicon technology?
qzcx··on Gallium Nitride Power Transistors Priced Cheaper Than Silicon
If I am understanding correctly GaN mainly used in power components since it can handle larger voltages. Is it possible that with GaN getting cheaper that it might start moving towards other component areas that Si dominates? Or is GaN's usefulness primarily in handling power?
qzcx··on Show HN: Sssaving – Are you gaining or losing money each month?
All of the above. Look over transactions, check balance, check trends. Honestly I do it as just something to do at times.
qzcx··on Show HN: Sssaving – Are you gaining or losing money each month?
I second this. Mint gives me a clear perspective into all of my accounts. I don't really need the monthly reminder to check my bank accounts. I do it almost weekly.
qzcx··on Microsoft Surface Hub
hmm. Back in my high school days (about 6 years ago), my physics professor had one in his classroom and he used it for every lecture. It was good for him because he could do page after page of whiteboarding and then send us to pdf to review.

Of course this is pretty impressive 6 years ago. If they haven't changed at all since then, I wouldn't use them, I would just project a touchscreen computer and use a stylus.

qzcx··on Talking About Money
Very cool. This looks like a solid answer to a simple question that many people would like answered. Now if only I could think up good side projects like this to do. : )
qzcx··on Talking About Money
Don't let their skepticism thrown you off. It is just another technique to low ball you.

In my own interviews going out of collage, I was told by peers about the offers they were making. I got asked what I was expecting to get by employers and told them around $80K because thats what my peers were getting and I consider myself to be on pretty equal ground with them and most companies scoffed at it. But then I got an offer of $95K and then they had to raise their own offers up to match. Its a ridiculous process to go through.

qzcx··on There are now at least eight Chromium-based Android default browsers
From google maps on my one plus. Menu > "Tips and Tricks" > "Zoom in and out in more ways than one." I didn't know about it either, but it took a minute to find the how to explanations. Personally I prefer standardized gestures to buttons to save the screen space, but thats just me.
qzcx··on Ask HN: If I learn one programming language, what should it be?
Having taught javascript to coworkers who were proficient in other languages (c++, c#, ect), javascript was confusing to them since many things act differently in javascript from other languages. That said, with the availability of online help and tutorials, you could definitely get off the ground with it, but it will give you a very different experience than something like python. Depends if you are more interested in programming fundamentals or in web programmings. If you are looking for fundamentals, I would learn Python or Java.
qzcx··on Want a steady income? There's an app for that
Although it sounds like she doesn't really have enough money to live comfortably on. It does imply in the article that she isn't sure of where she should spend her money. Dollar store vs. Walmart for groceries, ect. With a consistent paycheck, then she would know exactly how much she can spend on groceries and other things. Often it is the unknowns which cause people to mismanage, not that the managing was impossible to begin with.
qzcx··on Want a steady income? There's an app for that
For once I wished I came to the comments before reading. It was an interesting article, but it is definitely full of fluff
qzcx··on Want a steady income? There's an app for that
What is the risk you are referring to? On the surface it sounds like a decent app for someone who lacks financial skills.
qzcx··on Ask HN: How to train my students to be Unicorns
Anyone who has ever lost or accidentally saved over a file should appreciate git. They might not appreciate the complexity of git, but they can see the purpose.
qzcx··on Learn Python the Hard Way
Right? I came to the comment section to post something I found funny in the introduction... but I'm afraid people will get offended by it now.

"If you are reading this book and flipping out at every third sentence because you feel I'm insulting your intelligence, then I have three points of advice for you:

1.Stop reading my book. I didn't write it for you. I wrote it for people who don't already know everything.

2.Empty before you fill. You will have a hard time learning from someone with more knowledge if you already know everything.

3.Go learn Lisp. I hear people who know everything really like Lisp."

qzcx··on India students caught 'cheating' in exams in Bihar
Yeah, they would blow the curve. Most university require professors to have a certain average GPA for a given class. If all of the cheaters pass with flying colors due to cheating, then the people who would have looked good otherwise, now seem average and get a C instead of the A they deserve.

Cheaters, whether American or Indian or Chinese, ruin the educational experience of college. Universities really should take it much more serious than they currently do.

qzcx··on Dell’s Linux PC sequel still just works, but adds 4K screen and rough edges
On my mac, I use the right command key to one hand commands which require it and something on the right right keyboard. Very useful
qzcx··on You have the right to bear arms, not “electrical” arms, court declares
Not saying I wouldn't still keep the bat. But honestly, I'm sort of a pacifist as far as guns are concerned. I don't see them being necessary for most people in a modern society. (Yeah, I understand the whole "we need them to defend us from a evil government or criminals" argument. I'm not looking to get into a debate about it.)

Also, Using a bat is more heinous than a gun? What society are you from? Someone can be subdued but not killed with a bat, but a gun puts them down for good.

qzcx··on You have the right to bear arms, not “electrical” arms, court declares
I don't have any interest in owning guns. Simply because I didn't grow up around them and I would prefer to not have to have the responsibility or risk involved with owning one. However, I do have a bat in my home near my bed just in case. A taser sounds like an appealing option which is much less lethal than a handgun, but certainly gives me a better defense. I honestly don't understand the reasoning on this case.
qzcx··on The new MacBook
As someone who likes to have a second monitor when I can, where are my wireless display tech for monitors? It would be awesome if all I had to do was turn on my monitor and not have to deal with cables, but currently that is reality.

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to cable-less future when it come to monitors.

qzcx··on The new MacBook
The new macbook starts at $1299 as well. If you are going to compare them, then at least compare the same price points.
qzcx··on The new MacBook
This seems to be what I hear about getting the maxed out version of this laptop. Does anyone know if the fan is still really loud on the more moderate version (i5, touchscreen,256GB SSD)?
qzcx··on [dead]
Does anyone believe this? This seems like justification for why we should be able to have all of the sex, with none of the consequences. This article is presented as a cause and effect, but the statistics only give us a single data point. Basically it provided some data (which isn't even published) and gave the authors feel-good opinion. Utter garbage
qzcx··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
Oh I totally agree. I really dislike interviewing with anyone that I'm not going to be working with. It seems like that is a one way interview in that case. Why ask questions if the people who are answering them have no clue what the answers really are?
qzcx··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
This wouldn't happen in a phone screen. This is for the on-site interview after I've already gotten a positive feel for it.

Maybe I didn't word it perfectly, but it is partially out of a desire to know how they think I would benefit the company. Am I just another redundant cog in the machine, or am I really going to play a key role? I guess it is a good point to still make it in hypothetical language.

qzcx··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
I also like the question "Now that you've interviewed me and seen my abilities, how do you feel my working here will impact the team/company? What will I help out the most with?" I found it to be an effective question at turning it around, but it also makes them think about just what I could accomplish for them. It gives me a good gage of how well I did before I even leave the interview.
qzcx··on Show HN: Advertising-Free Search-Engine
I searched for "XPS 13" and I got several pages in German.
qzcx··on Ask HN: Has my education made me unhireable?
Could you take your research and create a business based upon it? Might be something to look at if you are going to be graduated and without work at first. I wouldn't put it as "Plan A", but it could be a good "Plan C" or "Plan D"
