qwerty456127··on Can you lose your native tongue? (2024)
Wow. English+Hindi+French+Russian+Tamil+.... So cool. You should probably add some Arabic, some Chinese, some Xhosa, some Gaelic and some native American languages to this list to appear endlessly awesome :-)
qwerty456127··on Carbon capture more costly than switching to renewables, researchers find
Everything is expensive but we have to start everything with something, then explore further to improve.
qwerty456127··on What does it mean that MP3 is free?
To me it seems OPUS is transparent at much lower than 120.

32 is more than enough for books/podcasts, 96 is more than enough for music. I doubt above-96 makes much sense for OPUS - I'd use FLAC if I needed better quality.

qwerty456127··on What does it mean that MP3 is free?
Who ever cared it was not?
qwerty456127··on Please don't force dark mode
DOS notably used eye-friendly grey text, not bright white.
qwerty456127··on Please don't force dark mode
How comes this isn't obvious to someone they should just respect the OS/browser settings and use the color scheme the user chose?

I prefer black on white (and dream of a eInk-only laptop and a perfectly lo-fi UI with no unnecessary elements/decorations/effects) because that feels more ADHD-friendly to me. Dark modes look cool and make sense when you work in the dark, as long as you set the text font color to grey rather than bright white/green/whatever. The user should choose, using a single system-wide switch.

qwerty456127··on Why do small children in Japan ride the subway alone?
Not as cheap as a life of a stranger in a big city.
qwerty456127··on How corn syrup took over America
I'd rather check why do most people get so addicted to sugar/whatever in their childhoods (the very archetype the first picture in the article illustrates) and why some don't.
qwerty456127··on How corn syrup took over America
> something similar in the seed oil discussions

Isn't difference between oils way more serious than between cane sugar and corn syrup?

qwerty456127··on Why do small children in Japan ride the subway alone?
After having a similar childhood, I concluded criminals normally avoid targeting small children - I haven't been mugged until becoming a teenager.
qwerty456127··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
> loves both the tactile feel and clacky sound

Loving something doesn't necessarily imply wanting it to persist all the time in all the situations. I love to endure extreme heat for some minutes in a sauna but hardly want to live and work there. I also love tactile feel an clacky sound of some mechanical switches but hearing the clack millions of times per day doesn't sound appealing. And having to apply even a minuscule amount of extra force so many times with finger muscles not designed for this doesn't sound safe.

qwerty456127··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
> I sometimes think about getting an ortholinear or split keyboard

So do I.

> but that rules out Topre

How comes?

qwerty456127··on Guide to mechanical keyboards
> Want a mechanical keyboard but don't know where to start?

Not really. I enjoy membrane keyboards and want everything as silent as possible. Yet I want a hackable controller firmware and it seems these are only available with mechanical keyboards.

qwerty456127··on Missiles are now the biggest killer of airline passengers
This obviously is a joke (as a short piece of fiction meant to appear funny, at least to the kind of people supposed to be its target audience) yet this joke is a major part of the actual propaganda operation ran by a primary state-owned TV channel. A friend from Russia confirmed this to me.
qwerty456127··on Being overweight overtakes tobacco smoking as the leading disease risk factor
Sounds epic. I always admire people who have actually been overweight (I haven't) before learning to manage hunger sustainably. That probably is hard.
qwerty456127··on HDMI 2.2 is set to debut at CES 2025
Curious. Never heard of these. Thanks.
qwerty456127··on HDMI 2.2 is set to debut at CES 2025
> If confirmed, this would align the new HDMI standard with the latest DisplayPort 2.1 technologies, offering consumers expanded options for ultra-high-definition media and gaming experiences.

Why do we need new HDMI when there already is DisplayPort for this?

qwerty456127··on Being overweight overtakes tobacco smoking as the leading disease risk factor
The same - just stop eating (for some time between a day and a week). I tried (for a week) successfully and that was fun. This way you discover you have power to choose to eat or not to eat, also learn to distract yourself from hunger and forget about it for whatever time you choose to. Switching to keto first, supplementing minerals - helps a lot.
qwerty456127··on Tokyo is set to introduce a four-day workweek for government employees
To me it seems (I'm not very serious, it just seems) the only real reason against 4-day workweeks everywhere are alcoholics. I knew too many people who woold spend whatever free time they get drinking booze, this way harming the society. We probably need a study on how numerous these are, also compared to those who would use extra spare time for any sort of good (including pure resting, education, friends/family etc).
qwerty456127··on Surgeon General says loneliness is driving US into anxiety and pessimism
I hope this is sarcasm. I would hypothesize people at the office rarely are the reference group one would enjoy spending time with. Just give people more days off regularly so they would have time to socialize with whom they actually have something to connect them.
qwerty456127··on Show HN: Indentation-based syntax for Clojure
I just want a programming language (probably a Lisp) where every thing is on a separate line, every sub-thing is indented and there is no choice (there always is only one right way to write something).

E.g.

    println(greetings(users))
should always be

    println
        greetings
            users
qwerty456127··on Raspberry Pi CM5 is 2-3x faster, drop-in upgrade (mostly)
Does it still only encode to H.264, no HEVC/AV1?
qwerty456127··on Show HN: App that asks ‘why?’ every time you unlock your phone
One should ask themselves just this whenever they are going to act or make a judgement.
qwerty456127··on Is the 80 character line limit still relevant? (2008)
It still is relevant in 2024.

> An 80 character limit has no relevance any more with modern computer displays.

It's still nice to keep the code or anything readable on a vertical mobile screen.

qwerty456127··on Buddhist Retreat: Why I gave up on finding my religion (2003)
> accept Christ as your Lord

Okay, why not? Then comes all stuff about what does this mean in practice and theory. And there are so many forms of Christianity arguing. The simplest one of them still is just be mindful and kind, for the sake of the Lord who was and is.

qwerty456127··on Buddhist Retreat: Why I gave up on finding my religion (2003)
Anything can be done terribly wrong and misused while formally correct if approached without reason and measure.

Instead of judging Buddhism, just practicing the simplest form of it by just meditating daily and consciously trying to be mindful and kind throughout every day usually does a great job. The same can be considered a simple form of Christianity as well though.

qwerty456127··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
I dunno about any credible. This (both the problem and the solution proposed) is a direction to explore. The problem and its supposed consequences are a pretty widespread "conventional knowledge" (if not a "city legend") and this way cringe to mention with a serious face without a good reason. So there is likely to be at least some ground.
qwerty456127··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
By the way Bryan Johnson recently mentioned a novel technique of using ultrasound to de-calcify pineal gland for improving sleep as it gets worse with aging - this sounds really intriguing to me.
qwerty456127··on FDA Proposes Ending Use of Oral Phenylephrine as OTC Nasal Decongestant
Makes sense. Thank you for clarifying.
qwerty456127··on FDA proposes ending use of oral phenylephrine as OTC nasal decongestant
Many medicines pose some risk to some people who would abuse it for too long. Xylometazoline just is crazy effective (instantly eliminates congestion and running nose completely in most cases) and completely harmless in what looks like 99% cases of usage - nearly-everyone here in the EU uses it happily and has no problems. I would really dread a cold without it and never travel without having it with me. Just try to not over-use habitually. The sense of measure is always a key to healthy and happy living.
