quotz··on Trapped in the dark for 35 hours – Red Sea dive-boat survivors tell of escapes
Better in what way? And Eastern Europe can range from Czech Republic, to the Balkans, to even include the Caucasus, and of course Russia. I'd wager half of Eastern Europe has better society than majority of the US excluding parts of the East Coast and the West coast.
quotz··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
The two reasons behind the TikTok ban:

1. Domestic big tech lobby

2. Domestic Israeli Lobby [1]

The China data is just a scapegoat. The risk is very minor. The US is banning TikTok because is a domestic big tech competition, and because lawmakers cant control it.

By your nickname I assume youre from exyugoslavia. I immediately knew what youre talking about
quotz··on Who killed the rave?
Its definitely not a feature. This sound system would be laughable in europe, where the techno culture is thriving. The point is to get lost to the music dancing. Not much talking should be going on. I think they designed it that way so as to not be noisy to the surrounding area since its an open space. Also, having a food vendor inside the club is extremely lame. Can't americans go a few hours without food? Do they have to eat everywhere they go? Its so weird every cocktail bar in NYC also serves food, this is not the case in europe. You go to a bar to drink, food is eaten at a restaurant.
quotz··on Who killed the rave? Late-night dancing falls into global decline
Brooklyn Mirage is hardly a rave place, just a club. Went last year it was pretty terrible. The sound was so quiet I could talk with my gf without yelling. There was also a food vendor inside the venue for whatever weird reason. Paid $300 for tickets and 2 drinks. I heard basement is a good place but never been. Europe's techno parties and raves are still going strong and no food vendors inside ofcourse we are not that lame.
quotz··on Phase behavior of Cacio and Pepe sauce
Not amuse bouche. To me it looks like a standard sized primi in a prix fix menu
quotz··on Phase behavior of Cacio and Pepe sauce
The pasta plate is called Primo Piatto meant to be eaten as the first part of the main course. The Secondo Piatto is the second part of the main course usually a meat dish, is meant to be eaten after the pasta. Hence why, the pasta course is small and needs to be small. However, there are exceptions, where pasta dishes can be the full main course on its own. The reason most italian pasta dishes are only a part of the main course is because they're not a balanced meal, and therefore will not properly feed you.

The concept of having multi-course meals is foreign to the USA both historically and culturally. The word "Entree" actually means appetizer in french, while in the USA it means main dish for whatever reason. Its even more ridiculous that USA restaurants that pretend to be fancy put "entrees" instead of "main dishes" on their menus.

Its pretty crazy that theres no Thomson.net competitor in the EU. Why is that the case? Maybe new startup idea?
quotz··on Ask HN: How to Look for Manufacturers in Europe?
I've tried a few of these directory pages but the results are really not good. I've even emailed the chambers of commerce for each country and no one replied..

Irans wants to sew chaos? The whole conflict with Iran started because the US and UK installed a puppet government (Pahlavi) so they can control the oil. After Pahlavi was ousted, the religious extreme took control, and cut ties with the west as a result. Its more like the west wanted chaos and started this whole mess

quotz··on Iranian writer is sentenced to 12 years after tweeting a dot at supreme leader
I reread your comment now I apologize. He was afraid of not getting arrested in Russia, rather then in his home country in the balkans. My bad.
quotz··on Iranian writer is sentenced to 12 years after tweeting a dot at supreme leader
At first I believed it was trumped up charges, but now I realize theres more to the story. We went from ukrainian charity, to they provided funds for military drones in 2016. And the western media is not reporting this of course. Its as much propaganda as the russian media...
quotz··on Iranian writer is sentenced to 12 years after tweeting a dot at supreme leader
If he was from the balkans his reason was definitely false and he just didnt wanna work at your place. We dont have that here, especially not for leaders not from our countries

The Balkans
quotz··on Ask HN: Hire freelancer devs, or a dev shop?
Thank you, I will shoot you an email soon!
quotz··on Ask HN: Hire freelancer devs, or a dev shop?
Its because those projects were primarily regionally focused, for the local market, and were modeled after other products that were successful elsewhere. After the projects were done, the dev shops charge annual maintenance fees, but no major changes or iteration can be done. On the other hand, my project’s target market is the US, then Europe. I would need to think long term with constant product iteration and improvement.
quotz··on Ask HN: Hire freelancer devs, or a dev shop?
Thank you for the advice. However, if I run out of the references, where else would I be able to find talent? Are online freelancing websites like upwork and toptal worth it?
quotz··on Ask HN: Hire freelancer devs, or a dev shop?
I am based half the year out of NYC and half the year in Eastern Europe. I know several friends who hired local eastern european dev shops for 10K-20K that delivered promising projects. I don't have reservations that 50K would be more than enough for a decent MVP, if I hire the talent locally.

quotz··on Who Owns Alexander the Great? It's a Diplomatic Minefield
But the ancient greeks considered them not greek. They wouldnt let them compete at the olympics either.

However, if we hypothesize that in similarity how the ancient macedonians started becoming roman and byzantine after, the same way they were actually assimilated into being slavs and mixed with them, because the slavs were in fact very open minded who was a slav and who wasnt, then we could say that the genetic line is there and in fact lots of people in the balkans and anatolia and south italy trace greek heritage.

The slavs from russia and ural are very different looking than the balkan slavs. In addition, you dont see many ethnic hungarians that look asian, even though the initial magyars were asian nomads. Same with bulgaria, the bulgars were asian nomads from the steppe, but hardly any ethnic bulgarians look asian. Meaning, the initial conquerors were a minority group being overlords or leaders of a majority local natives, who then got assimilated.

The mixing of peoples was there. The genetic trace is there. But the political rhetoric is crazy.

quotz··on Who Owns Alexander the Great? It's a Diplomatic Minefield
Not that true. There were significant populations of slavic macedonians living in what is now modern greece back when it was all ottoman empire. Post ww2 there was a yugoslav - greek war disguised as a civil war, which led to ethnic greeks killing and kicking out the majority of macedonian slavs that didnt want to convert to being greeks (change their name, and stop speaking macedonian at home). I personally know plenty people whos grandparents were refugees from that “civil war” and had to flee to yugoslavia, because their land and houses were stolen. Actually if you go now to Florina and Kozani because times have changed you will find plenty of people starting to come out of the closet and speak macedonian yet again and start openly practicing their culture, despite enduring forced assimilation years ago. Even despite the changing of the majority of town names, theres still slavic sounding names in the thessaly and epirus region.

The current people living in modern turkey that were greek back centuries ago and had to assimilate due to various reasons from greeks to turks, would current greeks nor accept them as part of their culture and greek identity now? Would you say that current turks and greeks share some identity despite the annihilation of the byzantinians?

Would the aromanians of modern greece not be accepted as being part of the greek identity?

Would the bulgarians not identify with their mongol steppe nomad overlords that came over in early medieval age and started a khanate over the local slav populations?

Would the modern hungarians claim that they are in fact mongol asians?

These are complicated topics, and politics are just making it worse. There is no definite answer, because the truth lies in who has more power to enforce it. Both greeks and macedonians drown their daily life struggles and sorrows by beating the nationalism drum, so that the corrupt politicians can scream stupid lies on the microphones so they can continue with their corruption, and the common people eat it up like porridge. History is much more complicated.

I am pretty sure in most european countries people would vote for the same answer
quotz··on Ultrasonic Coffee
I would try to go to SEY, its a bit far but that could be a perk. I liked the cafes in LA and Miami they were far more laidback
quotz··on Ultrasonic Coffee
Definitely has the space, and can make the time but does not want to. It takes immense selfhatred to work that much to please your boss instead of enjoying your coffee with a friend. I will note down your recs though. Everyman espresso and La Cabra are also good. Here in the Balkans in the specialty cafes which are handful, I can actually choose between which beans I want to wnjoy, maybe competition coffee from 1600 meters from Peru, maybe Mexico 1300 meters, maybe Ethiopia or Tanzania, even Indian competition coffee that won the cup #2. I have never seen anything similar in NYC, not even close. The baristas dont even know how many grams they put in the portafilter. Its sad.
quotz··on Ultrasonic Coffee
I would prefer having a coffee and a cigarette for lunch basking under the sun in Italy over eating hot pockets in a cubicle because I need a car to drive 30 mins to the nearest plaza that vaguely resembles a living breathing human settlement
quotz··on Ultrasonic Coffee
NYC has not great coffee culture (everyones on their laptops) despite some cafes serving okay coffee like Devocion perhaps among others. The Balkans where I am from has completely turned on the third wave coffee and combined with the coffee culture its amazing. People have 2-3 coffees a day just chilling under the sun. NYC should be ashamed. London is much better
quotz··on Portugal's democracy turns 50
The reason eastern europe rushed to NATO is simply because the west was quite wealthy as a capitalist bloc, and the former communist countries viewed the west as a holy grail. If the eastern europeans wanted access to the european markets, they would have to go through EU integration, and of course NATO. Its not like they could join the EU if they still were in a warsaw-pact like military alliance. The truth is, the west had more influence because of their economies.
quotz··on Portugal's democracy turns 50
Oh also to add, regarding literacy rates, even before WW1 because Croatia and Slovenia were Austro-hungarian, and the rest was Ottoman, the literacy rates were way different, with the former being much much higher. Currently, its probably about the same with Croatia and Serbia.
