quoderat··on @font-face makes the web pretty (or ugly). (Needs FF 3.5 or Safari)
I really don't look forward to giving everyone the ability to use whatever crazy, hard-on-the-eyes font they want to use.

Hitler on fonts:

(Not for the humor-challenged.)

As a customer, I certainly did not benefit when Dell, a few years ago, moved their server support offshore, leading to that support team telling me repeatedly that I should "reboot Windows" when I was working on a firmware issue that would not even let me install Windows.

Well, Dell lost $200,000 a year worth of business for that, so....

quoderat··on [dead]
This is inevitable, yes, but I am also tired of people who pretend that it is good for any but the businesses who benefit.

With very rare exceptions, it won't be good for those who lose their jobs in the US, though it does offer a benefit to those who get those (now vastly-lower-paying) jobs. Mainly, the business benefits.

Capitalism's problem is that it is amoral, has no sympathy, and will destroy the lives of 3.4 million people for 10% more profits.

I love capitalism, but I do not love that.

quoderat··on Vanishing middle class at 4M....down from 12M in 2000
The plutocrats don't seem to realize that in gutting the economy, they will also eventually gut themselves. Goldman Sachs, I am looking at you.

Gordon Gekko was supposed to be a satire, not an exemplar of how to live.

Get something on the front page of Digg? You've got to be kidding me.

No self-respecting Geek has used Digg since 2007, at the latest.

Ah, apparently no one bothered to check the actual facts before downvoting:

quoderat··on New York Times Considers $5 Monthly Web-Access Fee
No way in the world I will pay for this. Nothing that special in the NYT to me. They are already close to going out of business as is. This won't make it any better.

quoderat··on Embarrassing Questions On Global Warming
I would give that thought a lot more credence if you'd linked to a scientist, rather than Michael Crichton in the height of disingenuousness (on his part).

Scary things lie at the end of that road if they are unsupported by the evidence. Unfortunately, all the evidence points to anthropogenic climate change.

quoderat··on Firefox 3.5 is out
Or you could just run Firefox completely in RAM in Linux, as I do:

It's fairly easy. There's a guide just for Ubuntu, too:

quoderat··on Embarrassing Questions On Global Warming
I think it's pretty natural to be angry when so many people are so cluelessly inveighing against something both so harmful and so scientifically obvious.
quoderat··on Krugman on the Climate Change Conspiracy
The problem is, increasing Antarctic ice is expected, given the warming actually occurring:

http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/27/whats-really-up...

"But scientists studying trends at both poles say there is nothing inconsistent with the intensifying greenhouse effect. William Chapman, who maintains the helpful Cryosphere Today Web site at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, sent me an email this morning reminding me of a 2005 study that projects more Antarctic sea ice (by volume) in a warming world."

And that's without even getting into the question of is the climate change anthropogenic or not. Given what we know about CO2, hard to see how it could be otherwise, but not worth arguing over. What will happen, will happen.

quoderat··on Krugman on the Climate Change Conspiracy
If my point is correct, and the evidence, facts and data all align with it, then anything else I say is irrelevant.

That's the problem, though -- people make these decisions based on emotions, vested interests, or what they wish were so, rather than the real evidence. If global warming/climate change is harmful to capitalist greed (and I don't think all capitalism is greed, or vice versa), then it prima facie must be incorrect, in some folks' view.

Not saying you are guilty of that, but so very many are.

quoderat··on Krugman on the Climate Change Conspiracy
Your data is wrong. Did you even bother to check?

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/arctic_thinice.htm...

"Until recently, the majority of Arctic sea ice survived at least one summer and often several. But things have changed dramatically, according to a team of University of Colorado, Boulder, scientists led by Charles Fowler. Thin seasonal ice -- ice that melts and re-freezes every year -- makes up about 70 percent of the Arctic sea ice in wintertime, up from 40 to 50 percent in the 1980s and 1990s. Thicker ice, which survives two or more years, now comprises just 10 percent of wintertime ice cover, down from 30 to 40 percent.

According to researchers from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., the maximum sea ice extent for 2008-09, reached on Feb. 28, was 5.85 million square miles. That is 278,000 square miles less than the average extent for 1979 to 2000."

And yep, parts (but only parts) of the Antarctic ice cap are growing -- but guess why? Warmer air creating more snowfall.

You people are hopeless. Data, facts, evidence -- none of it sways you. It's like some religion.

The root? No.

Human nature uncontrolled is the root. Goldman is just the diseased cesspool in which it's allowed to fester.

It's despairing that so much of modern capitalism has moved from "a fair deal at a fair price" to a scam of sorts -- even if it's a legal scam.

Some folks have a natural urge to be obeisant to the powerful, no matter who or what the powerful party is, or what they have done.

That "essay" is a good example thereof.

quoderat··on Ever Downloaded a Copyrighted Song? You Owe Infinity Dollars
I am glad when things like this occur. Ridiculous verdicts like this actually harm the record industry, and shake people's faith in the court system being fair and equitable.

The RIAA couldn't have found a better way to discredit themselves in the eyes of the public, except perhaps by condoning child rape or re-uniting the Backstreet Boys.

quoderat··on Thomas verdict: willful infringement, $1.92 million penalty
From the tone of many in this thread, it seems that people don't understand that non-commercial copyright is not a crime, but instead is a civil infraction -- hence why Thomas was not arrested, and not tried in a criminal court.

But the copyright industry certainly wants everyone to believe it is a crime. Looks like it is working.

Sad.

Like most sites as they get larger, what gets trashed and removed becomes a lot more capricious as what offends some sub-group (or challenges them) tends to get removed, while others are complacent.
