quirk··on Ask HN: How to train an image recognition AI
Lol yes I too can ask Ai how to Ai.
quirk··on Ask HN: How to train an image recognition AI
Fast.ai course is just what I needed for now. Thank you.
quirk··on Ask HN: How to train an image recognition AI
I very much want to hear this! The issue we're facing is that the maintenance staff is very undertrained on a specific subset of equipment. But that equipment is actually very critical. Also I was vague in the first post - in reality this is for hospitals within a system, not one single building.

When you say "won't require retraining if a new equipment manufacturer comes into play" I don't really follow.

Edit: I get it now - you mean by using QR we wouldn't need to retrain the image recognition AI. It's a good concern, although in this specific area there is not a ton of innovation or newcomers. Worth keeping in mind though.

Externality of energy consumption? I'm pretty sure they are already paying for that. Or are you saying they should pay more per KWh than some other user for some reason? As for SMRs my guess is that local regulators will be the first hurdles to overcome. Cities and states will either embrace or reject the risk/reward there. I know the DOE approved one last year at the national level.
quirk··on How have you found purpose in your life?
> I STILL cannot crack the purpose and meaning stuff.

Same with 99% of humans! Don't be too hard on yourself.

As for suggestions, I'll echo the others' thoughts about having or adopting kids. Very strong agree.

In addition to that, try to take it all back to the deepest root you can find. Why are humans here? Think about how we were formed by the universe, over time. Why would we have these abilities to think and make and decide? These are the kinds of questions that can lead you to a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. I wrote a book about this, but I always suggest people try to write it out themselves.

Some questions to get you started: 1. Try to explain how humanity fits into the big picture of the universe. Through introspection and examination of the natural world, show how the universe created us.

2. Look at one human’s purpose in the broad landscape of humanity, and try to understand why we find purpose in creating things for the rest of society to enjoy.

3. Look at the order of our universe, our society, and our individual abilities, and try to see how they are naturally linked.

quirk··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
Douglas Murray's book "The Madness of Crowds" explains this very succinctly. On the other side of the political aisle you could reference the pro-life-only voting block who now finds themselves trying to raise money on an issue that has been resolved (in their minds). "Dog Catches Car" is the headline for all of these issues.
quirk··on US will relax pollution-limiting rules for vehicle emissions
In Indiana our electricity comes primarily from coal, so EVs here run on coal. I'm not sure that is better for the environment than heavily-filtered exhaust from gasoline combustion. I'm just trying to understand why so much focus is on personal vehicles when emission comes mostly from other sources: https://www.c2es.org/content/international-emissions/#:~:tex.... I assume because it's easier to tell people they can't drive a certain kind of car than it is to tell an energy company they can't burn a certain kind of fuel.
quirk··on Ask HN: Best way to build an MVP for non-technical founder
Do you happen have any recommendations for who I might reach out to?
quirk··on Ask HN: Best way to build an MVP for non-technical founder
I really appreciate your thoughtful answer!

Hire dev firm or individual > Make sure they can provide ongoing support

CTO cofounder > Need to consider upside/downside

Learn to code (or Bubble) > Need to consider my available time + decide on a language

I have started and stopped the Python 3 course on Code Academy probably 3-4 times over the years. I'm leaning that route. With GPT I bet I could knock something out in a couple months that would at least get me to a point where I can invite a few customers to kick the tires.

quirk··on Ask HN: Best way to build an MVP for non-technical founder
You’re right, more details: The goal is a working app that I can monetize, no outside funding desired. The app will be a document repository for facility managers who need to keep track of their equipment maintenance manuals. It’s a very specific niche, so not many customers but the pain is real. They have to keep the copies available in one place for regulatory purposes.
quirk··on Amazon's Ring to stop letting police request doorbell video from users
Yes this is the weird part. Since this activity was always voluntary, I wonder about the real reason for this policy change.

"Dumb" life has survived and flourished on Earth at much higher global temperatures. Smart life (humans) should certainly be able to figure it out.
quirk··on How fast can European steelmakers decarbonise?
Just please don't decarbonize my swords. I need them for work.
quirk··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
I'm reading Nick Lane's book The Vital Question right now and he discusses this in some ways. Life escapes entropy at the local level, but increases entropy in its environment. At least this is what I think he is saying, I'm about 1/3 of the way through and it's pretty dense for a popular science book.
quirk··on Ask HN: Where can I share app ideas and others help refine it?
For example:

An app to surface interesting new products from relatively unknown small businesses using gamified reviews.

Best French Fries in Bloomington. You start by doing a public poll and say, what's your favorite french fries in Bloomington? You narrow it down to ten places, ten products. That becomes the "product mission". You say, within this week, you need to go out and buy some french fries from these ten places. And then people go out and anonymously order these fries, rate them on some scale of one to ten: value, uniqueness, crispness, freshnes, saltiness, etc. You run ads and everyone who participates gets a share of the revenue. So the more they participate the more coin they get. Use ETH or something.

quirk··on Why Intermittent Fasting Has So Many Health Benefits
Right there with you. Went from 205 to 185 with the same method. I'm also running longer distances than I did when I was eating more carbs. Did a half marathon in November for the first time in years and felt great. Even beat my previous time (43 now, was 32 last time).
quirk··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
> It's because the animals need to eat (surprise surprise) vegetables!

Not exactly. In pastoral agriculture, animals eat grasses that humans cannot, on land that is not easily farmable (infertile, rocky, hilly, etc). A nice side effect of this is that the animals make the land more farmable by fertilizing it with their poops.

quirk··on Yarrow – Old Farmer's Almanac
I have a few of these. It's a good companion for fruit trees as it attracts ladybugs and other aphid-eaters. Also why are we discussing this here.

quirk··on Ask HN: How to deal with burnout and its consequences?
I went through something pretty similar about four years ago. It was incredibly tough, but I was able to pull out of it and am more resilient now. It took me a few months to sort it all out, which I did mostly by writing. In the short term though, I relied heavily on my dad and my wife to help talk things through. If you have anyone close you can talk with, that's the best thing to do. I also got a prescription for Xanax, which I took every couple of days when I was feeling rough. After a few weeks of that I stopped taking them, but felt comforted knowing they were there in my drawer if I started spiraling down again. I did end up publishing the stuff I wrote during that time, and am happy to send you a copy if you're interested at all. I'm at quirk@cardinalspirits.com and the book is here. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092WWNYQC/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_2P...
