quinnjh··on “wow. using ML to generate images from text is about to get a whole lot weirder”

I wish folks were intelligent enough to graduate from "LOL microchips?? Idiot" to actually acknowledging mRNA technologies, the fact that ipv6 adresses can be printed on blood platelettes, and the reality of innovations in microrobotics and nanoparticle fluid tagging.

As long as people like the author have their head in the sand about some stuff they dont like thinking about , actual scientific papers will continue to fuel conspiracy theories...

Not sure why they put "geoengineering" in quotes either. Author should peruse the IEEE chapter for it. https://spectrum.ieee.org/tag/geoengineering

quinnjh··on Scientific American does an hit job on E. O. Wilson, calling him a racist
Risking the cultural foundation? To admit that people in the past acted with racial bias? Really?

To me that is literally cultural fragility. To fail to depart from the purity of the past myth you cling to suggests you lack the resilience to embrace the totality of what actually was.

Not saying you dont have a point- not saying we toss it all or slander everyone as evil- im saying we reckon with the complexity - the grey space between 0 and 1 if we want to actually realize the founding fathers very noble ideals.

I dont think this article made a very good attempt at it , and i think the previous comments pointing out what was lacking in relation to other "good" articles was the sort of "yes and" im referring to.

Though since you have no interest in rhetorical purity i should probably take your advice and dismiss the comment entirely as not being "in good faith" , right coach? ;p

quinnjh··on Scientific American does an hit job on E. O. Wilson, calling him a racist
Excellent point! I think id like to reiterate my "yes and" stance- your critique of what is lacking doesnt dismiss , it acknowledges the claims but asks for more of a proof. I think thats good rigor.

I think readers with kneejerk reactions to the tune of "theyve gone downhill / woke / bs" are maybe missing the point?

To pull from OPs url, evolution is true. This could suggest that true is not on one side of the "classical science is a blameless objective virgin" and "classical science is an evil villain" and is instead a third position that integrates the awareness of biological and social processes we are currently afforded and keeps pressing on...

Sounds rad :D Ive been in a similar position. Learning from the higher end of things but beginning to pick up some clisp.

Ive been toying with the idea of quantum mechanics in relation to scale free architecture... wanting to read this book on quantum chemistry and group theory and eventually think from the bottom up, but in a way that could perhaps keep the "entanglements" to the priorities set on higher levels of the semantic stack...

I might be a bit far out here but my goal is to eventually gather enough knowledgeable folks in a shared repository to at least begin a collection of discussions about what is desired. I started a github repo w a collective approach and the forum is open for app if youre interested in collaboration. The more of these "takes" that i can account for in designing a new lang the better, and as other commenters point out the disagreements that would arise in collective development i think thats where forks and merges can come in handy. Insteads of docs as code maybe more like code as docs? With atomicity and scalability? Am i just naive? Ill find out later. https://github.com/holarchyclub/discussions/discussions

For us to grow beyond entrenched binaries takes self awareness. Could you perhaps see how another doctor who hs caused harm before may have believed they were truly only doing good - and this could have been enabled by them being barraged with ethics reviews? "What do you mean i caused harm i have to do all these things to prove that i dont do harm" Meanwhile history shows clearly the sacrifices that were taken.

I had a 3m ad a while ago where a mom takes her kid to the bus in the dark and pats him on the back where his backpack is, and its glowing- implying it is safe- the ad is like " at 3M we worry about how your kids backpack shines so you don't have to!" Tritium. It shines from tritium.

quinnjh··on Why 'Long Rituals' Matter
I had a laugh when I read an article about therapists concerned about mental health epidemic saying "we should have a secretary or someone who can give a daily address"

I guess most of the graduates of todays clinical programs are trained well in doublespeak and dont understand the seperation of church and state. But sure give me the "government appointed mindstate of the day" since its more "free" than the "opression" of religion...

Data driven design is exactly why their UX is so awful. Give it a few years and someone else will be able to compete just by offering a unified view of deployed resources.

I dont think we should be encoding rules relating to which classes of people are "above" and "below". Can you see how encoding a platform with rule sets for the "highers" and "lowers" could be problematic if maintained for years?

Obviously im failing to grapple with the content. However, it is time we look at race as a technology of control- and if the "above" class is taught sticks and stones while the "below" class is taught that words and silence are violence - are we not re-entrenching the same oppressive binaries? (Oh right i forgot what the point was)

quinnjh··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
In lieu of an economic system that redistributes gains in productivity, arguable anyone involved in automation SHOULD be "working" less and less. If your job duties are fulfilled by a weekly bash script , and you were hired to perform those duties weekly, i dont see why you shouldnt be paid for delivering the work and reap the reward of spending that time on personal projects / charity / hobbies

Also like others said passive processing - chewing on an issue for 4 days and having the breakthrough in 20 minutes - if you only were paid for the 20 minutes it would be completely unsustainable, you would constantly grind and not recieve the rewards for that exponential (and humanly impossible) rise in productivity

quinnjh··on Facts don’t change our minds (2018)
I guess the point i was trying to make, while dismissing the "validity" of it is that encapsulated factual models all still require some references- at some point truth breaks down into trust in the chains of composition. I dont understand fuzzy logic nearly enough - but it needs some kind of rule set and knowledgebase yes?

Lets say you program a fuzzy logic controller that returns large=true for numbers > 100, and i program mine to return large = true for numbers > 10. Like you say, its subjective.

These rulesets are chosen as truth in the same way the grenwich meantime is 0* lat, and we dont use the paris meantime because we arent french revolutionaries and also the brits had stronger empire.

If i came off as joking its bc i am aware of the lunacy of my take. To call "normal" good is a strong position, but who was norm?? And why do we all have to measure up to him?

Not one perspective, right then- how many? Is 2 perspectives the best number? Or do we need to add every conscious perspective? Who is deciding what the "meridian" of bias (which is a range) is located? Cuz right now its in Greenwich UK but im not sure if that "fact" was known to the other side of the world until forced. Empiricism is empire and quantum is weird mannn
quinnjh··on Facts don’t change our minds (2018)
I think people acquire false beliefs using the peer-effect vulnerability. :| Virtue signalling is necessary to maintain social capital within social networks, and people will change their words and adapt worldviews accordingly- especially when theres no "skin in the game" !
quinnjh··on Open letter to Mark Zuckerberg: act now on child and adolescent mental health
You absolutely have a point- and yes it opposes the other. The other point is valid from a scientific perspective though. I highly recommend you read Norbert Weiners "Cybernetics the human use of human beings" to be able to grapple with the dualism at play. In particular he discusses the manichaean vs augustinian version of evil. He could not reconcile the two but reflecting on the general ways that information leads to effects, and the ontological conflict between "we have free will so its your fault you are oppressed" vs "its not your fault it was engineered to oppress you" - the problem is dual.

Social media platforms are giant algorithmic feedback engines creating the most reliable way for their regular users to fulfill their neuro-chemical and social needs. That these people cannot find better information in their mediasphere means that we need to encourage people and remind them of their agency - yes - but we cannot leave it at "words of encouragement" when the other end is "massive highly personalized feedback loop of all the people you miss seeing"
