quickslowdown··on Jeep owners fed up with in-car pop-up ads
I'm with you on this. I don't even know how to have a conversation about ads with someone whose position is anything other than "fuck psychologically manipulating people into buying something they don't need and didn't want 2 minutes ago."

I block ads anywhere I can. I don't watch tv, listen to radio, watch youtube, etc. I basically don't see ads. And when I see or hear one out in the world, I immediately shift my focus elsewhere. It's automatic at this point, I hear or see the start of an ad and immediately dissociate or turn my attention elsewhere.

I'm not interested in splitting hairs over " acceptable" advertising, because that's an oxymoron to me.

I understand this is a hardline stance. But ads should really be annoying the shit out of all of us. People discussing the benefits of privacy encroachment for the sole purpose of "serving me better ads" are, in my opinion, missing the point. Or at least missing my point. I don't want ads, especially ones that are targeted based on data collected from me. These are the most likely to effectively sway me towards buying something.

If I want something, I'll go online and search for it and might decide to buy it. I don't need some marketing schmuck who spent their entire 8 hour day trying to build a perfect string of words and sound effects designed to trigger deep seated biological responses in me. If I want your product, I will find it.

Sorry for the rant.

quickslowdown··on I struggled with Git, so I'm making a game to spare others the pain
I never said if you're not using the CLI then you're a noob. I'm talking about people new to git in general.
quickslowdown··on I struggled with Git, so I'm making a game to spare others the pain
I learned the git CLI first, and still prefer it, but I've found VSCode's source control plugin very helpful for teaching newbies. I tell them to avoid the synch button and just manually git fetch/pull, but adding a commit is easier for a newbie to do visually.

I also found LazyGit recently and think that's a good middleground for doing things from the CLI.

quickslowdown··on Ask HN: Do US tech firms realize the backlash growing in Europe?
Gickup mirrors most of these things. Not sure about PRs, but it can mirror issues, wiki, and all your branches.
quickslowdown··on Ask HN: Do US tech firms realize the backlash growing in Europe?
I'm with you there. I still use Github regularly, but I recently spent time setting up Gickup to mirror all my repos to codeberg. I'm also looking at the git-sync tool to just backup all my github repos locally.
quickslowdown··on Privacy Is Not Dead: Beware the All-or-Nothing Mindset
For me personally, it comes down to diversity. If all other browser engines "go under" and we are only left with Chromium, websites can only be built for 1 browser. Although Chromium is a great engine (evidenced by how many browsers are built on top of it and how widely the underlying Chromium engine has been embraced), it's not without quirks, bugs, flaws, and vulnerabilities.

Firefox is built from the ground up in a different way from Chromium, with its own set of bugs, quirks, flaws, and vulnerabilities. There may be some overlap, but having entirely different architectures means we keep pushing the compatibility envelope, we get "copycat" features, where one engine does something great and the other implements it in a way that works with their own engine, etc.

It's just better to have more than 1 browser engine around. I wish it wasn't so difficult to start a new engine from scratch today, the sheer amount of features a web browser must have to get people to even consider reading your About page, and the overwhelming complexity of modern webstacks, mean you basically have to be grandfathered in as a browser that's been around for decades and has a huge amount of community support.

I am aware of alternative browsers, Arc and the like. I'm very happy to see someone seriously go after an entirely new browser engine that's not Gecko or Chromium, and the traction they're gaining while not being "fully featured" sort of sums up the sentiment of my message (I hope). Having alternatives is good.

quickslowdown··on You're not a senior engineer until you've worked on a legacy project (2023)
cURL is my personal go-to when discussing things like this. The Unix implementation is old, stable, functional, and has changed elegantly with the times.

I'm not the OP, but I'll say that I don't believe you, because you're telling me you have The Perfect Solution, without providing even a hint of what that solution is. If I was skeptical at first, I'm now certain you're selling smoke & mirrors until you provide any evidence at all you actually have an idea here.

quickslowdown··on Ask HN: Riding the Roller Coaster of Development Tooling
Pick your tools and use them. If your company or team requires a tool not in your toolbelt, learn it and use it when required, but always have your preferred stack in your pocket.

When the opportunity arises to sway your team towards new tooling, demo your choices.

There are new tools all the time, and it's worth it to not get too attached to any one stack. Letting yourself get too attached to one tool is a surefire way to box yourself in. Most of them do similar things, but in different ways. My thoughts on this are that the code is what matters, not the tooling.

quickslowdown··on So Many Unmarried Men
I don't think this even needs to be gendered. I'm not insinuating any kind of bias in your comment, it just got me thinking that this is more "people" than a gender divide where women need more self reflection and men need lower standards.

People are selfish, self interested, & caught up in their own lives. Many people suck at consistently thinking about someone other than themselves, and are not good at sacrifice or compromise. It's truly a special thing when you find someone willing to put in equal effort.

Alright, maybe "article" was a poor word choice? Thanks for an example of of what happens when you link to their site from here, I was just curious to read into the drama, it sounds like an interesting story from a pocket of the internet I'm not familiar with.

When I said "article," I guess I meant that I don't want to watch a youtube video detailing the drama or whatever, I was hoping to just read about it. Either way, thanks for the link and the explanation further down the thread.

quickslowdown··on ICE wants to know if you're posting negative things about it online
Not an ounce of sarcasm in my comment. If I had wanted a sarcasm tag, I would have added one.
quickslowdown··on ICE wants to know if you're posting negative things about it online
This is the right answer. This is a job, something each individual worker signed up for, and continues to show up for. They're not being forced to carry out their work, and actions have consequences. They need to accept those consequences, or find a new line of work, preferably the latter because fuck ICE and its employees.
quickslowdown··on ICE wants to know if you're posting negative things about it online
Why wouldn't you say negative things about ICE? They suck, and are constantly coming up with ridiculous schemes like this to avoid criticism for the evils they're very aware they commit. Fuck ICE.

quickslowdown··on DOGE staffer is trying to reroute FEMA funds
Objectively untrue. Voting irregularities aside, far more people sat the election out entirely, and of those who voted, there was a vanishingly small lead Trump & co had.

The majority of the country is disengaged & apathetic. That's worse than a majority "wanting this," in my personal opinion, but the majority of the country did not vote for this, they just didn't vote at all.

Hard disagree. We can agree on Science the institution being imperfect, while acknowledging that a Twitter style hostile takeover of our government is absolutely unacceptable with no wiggle room for bullshit artists to throw out red herrings.

I'm not talking about those people. I'm talking about villains, like Trump and Musk, Kash Patel, Mitch McConnel, the people we treat as villains because they have shown us repeatedly that's what they are.
