That was a cosmic ray proton, which has probably 10 billion times the mass of a neutrino and interacts much more strongly with normal matter. A nuclear juggernaut vs a ninja by comparison.
Total energy of impact would be 120 PeV x 10^16 = 120 x 10^31 eV = ~60 kilotons TNT, or 4 Hiroshimas.
So BIG boom.
Since the velocity is so close to the speed of light, you can think of this like the energy released by annihilating a ping pong ball made of antimatter.
Edit: Commenter asked what would happen if they "hit", so I'm assuming a hypothetical 100% collision. But yes to stop 1/e of a neutrino beam with normal matter, you'd need a light year of lead.
The blog writer's final design is basically what Ford uses in the F-series these days. But Ford's dials have a couple of functions that I didn't see mentioned. First, when you turn the temperature dial all the way hot and push hard into the stop, it turns on max defrost, and all the way cold and push is max A/C. Also, if the system is off, it turns on when you turn either dial. The dials are also large and rubbery for gripping with dirty hands or with gloves on, something a lot of manufacturers seem to ignore.
Furthermore, this "story" is actually a promotion for his book. It's amazing how many articles in legacy media these days are paid advertisements for someone's latest book.
Not really. Now when I want to uninstall something, I have to look in multiple places for its artifacts, rather than just nuking .<appname>. And there is no universal pattern of use. It's even worse than /usr vs /opt.
Also a ton of ALL CAPS TYPES. Are we seriously throwing out all of the standard Rust naming conventions to adopt the ancient Windows naming-as-typing crap?
The blog writer has particularly bad handwriting, and maybe that's why he needs these tricks. I've seen a lot of math handwriting, and seriously his is among the worst. Maybe he was drawing the letters with a mouse.
It's only a small part of the barrier to entry, though. I could write Einstein's equations out in words, and most people still wouldn't be able to do GR.
I might move somewhere that gave me a person grant. The U.S. works primarily on project grants, where you are funded to do a thing, but that thing doesn't always work, and most of the time it's a bit contrived in order to appeal to the funding agency. (This is probably so the bureaucrats can exert power over what is studied.) The system would work much better if individual scientists got guaranteed salaries to study whatever seemed appropriate, and if you needed money for equipment you can request it. This would lead to more crazy ideas being explored and less derivative, p-hacked slop carried out by graduate student slave labor.
We fought a literal civil war and bounced back. We've had multiple presidents assassinated but still had continuity of power. I doubt the U.S. is going anywhere anytime soon except maybe down a couple slots on the world's largest economies lists, and that's soley due to population growth.
Some of us who are optimistic believe that the uniqueness of the U.S. lies in its favorable environment for innovation (e.g. YC), so we hope to invent our way out of problems. We grew up on hopeful sci-fi and will stick to it until our bitter end.
The new problem is the factories making a lot of this stuff are heavily polluting, and we have little to no control over that because they are abroad. Part of a good climate strategy must involve regulating them somehow.
It's not that simple. Congress can't specify every pen and pencil expense, so they allocate large buckets. The executive can decide how each bucket is spent. Like when your mom gives you $20 to go to the movies. She doesn't care what movie you see, but she'd be mad if you skipped the movies and spent it on weed.
The 8th-grader understanding is that each branch does what it's supposed to do with virtuous motives. The adult understanding is that they exercise as much power as they can until forced to stop.
I think the idea is the interest on the debt will approach our ability to pay soon. That would be like your mortgage payment being toward interest only, and you were barely able to make it.
That is literally the power of the Executive, to choose which laws to enforce and which to not. Congress makes the laws, and the Courts adjudicate. That is the whole basis of the federal government.
Blue no matter who is exactly how we got here. DNC needs to start now coming up with a platform and a viable candidate. They need to retire the geriatrics and start cultivating new young blood.
> following democratic processes to achieve the desired ends
That has been failing for a while now. Congressional approval is in the 20% range, much lower than even Trump's. An odd fact never mentioned in the media. The U.S. is toast if it can't reverse Citizen's United.
