quechimba··on Enhancement of mosquito trapping efficiency using pulse width modulated LEDs
Mosquito coils are very efficient for keeping mosquitoes away. I use them in the rainforest where there's a lot of mosquitoes. I light a coil before I go to bed, they last 8 hours. Mosquito nets are also efficient to keep them out.
quechimba··on ‘Flying aliens’ harassing village in Peru are illegal miners with jetpacks: cops
They have seen these beings in villages near Iquitos too. They call them pelacaras, face peelers. Someone I know saw 4 beings flying about one meter above the ground outside her house last week.

Would illegal miners even have access to jetpacks?

quechimba··on Why Ruby on Rails Needs Components
Mayu Live[1] has components, it works kinda like React. I have been thinking about making rdom[2] work with Rails but I got a memory leak to fix first. It's possible to do all this in Ruby though.

quechimba··on Transform your Android device into a Linux desktop
My laptop died due to high humidity in the Amazon rainforest and I had some work to do, so I bought a USB keyboard and installed zsh, tmux, vim, ruby, node and postgres in Termux and worked on my phone. The screen is too small but I could get things done. Sometimes I borrowed my brothers laptop and logged in to my phone over ssh to work.
quechimba··on An introduction to metaprogramming in Ruby
I have used Sorbet in my web framework. The method signatures can be tedious to type out sometimes, but it helps a lot when refactoring code. I feel more confident that my changes will work. It's not as flexible as TypeScript, but it's pretty good and has saved me from mistakes many times. The language server helps a lot with autocompletion so I don't have to keep every little detail in my head all the time. Sometimes I have to structure the code a little bit different just to make Sorbet happy which is annoying, but I've also been able to replace huge parts of the codebase quite easily.
quechimba··on An introduction to metaprogramming in Ruby
method_missing is great if you're wrapping an object

    class Wrapper < BasicObject
      def initialize(obj)
        @obj = obj
      end

      def method_missing(name, *, **, &)
        ::Kernel.puts "Calling #{name}"
        @obj.send(name, *, **, &)
      end
    end
quechimba··on Amazon is getting ready to launch a lot of broadband satellites
I'm sure there is demand, it's just too remote to be practical. They did get a fiber connection to the closest city a few years ago which made 4G faster. One million people live in the region and there are more places like that in the world. 32% of the Latin American population don't have access to high speed Internet. Schools, hospitals and businesses could be connected which would be good for education, healthcare and economy.

I spent a few days in Leticia and the Internet connection was really shaky, sometimes they can't even work at the migration office because the connection is so bad. 50 000 people live there and 67 000 in the neighboring city Tabatinga. And there's a lot of islands in the world too.

quechimba··on Amazon is getting ready to launch a lot of broadband satellites
In the village where my brother lives there are no wires. There is a 4G tower but it runs on solar panels and the connection isn't very stable on cloudy days. I spoke to a person who works at a company in that area that uses Starlink. One satellite dish would probably be enough to provide Internet for the entire village.
quechimba··on Iosevka typeface for code, from code
I switched from Pragmata Pro to Iosevka Term Curly Slab a few years ago and I'm really happy with it. It's easy to read and I can fit a lot of code on one screen.
quechimba··on DMT, Derealization, and Depersonalization
I wouldn't recommend anyone to smoke DMT or changa, it's way too strong and it's difficult to make sense out of the experience afterwards.

Ayahuasca is an amazing medicine. If you decide to do it, do it in the Peruvian Amazon, read the reviews carefully of each retreat center before you decide on which one to go to. Follow the diet and any other restrictions, this is especially important AFTER drinking ayahuasca. The shaman will tell you what to avoid and for how long. Don't use kambo, bufo or rapé before, during or after the retreat, it will interfere with the treatment. A lot of vendors in Iquitos will try to convince you that it's good to combine rapé with ayahuasca, but it isn't. Ayahuasca works best alone. Basically you should only be doing ayahuasca (and mapacho if you like to smoke).

It's a very powerful medicine and if you drink with someone with bad intentions it can be very dangerous.

quechimba··on Aspartame sweetener to be declared possible cancer risk by WHO, say reports
Regular coke is probably my biggest source of aspartame now that they changed the recipe to contain 30% less sugar compensated by aspartame and acesulfame-k. I bought a Sprite a while ago and it tasted different so I checked and it doesn't even contain any sugar even though the bottle looks just like before and says "100% saborizantes naturales" (although the sweeteners are artificial). Here's the product page, https://www.coca-cola.com.pe/marcas/sprite
quechimba··on Docker Acquires Mutagen
Yeah, I used the command line sync. It was great. I was running my development environment on a virtual machine in the cloud and I could edit all the files locally so I had no lag. Worked really well.
quechimba··on Demystifying burnout – A deep dive into its symptoms and remedies
I've burned out a few times. Every time was different. First time was the worst. It took me about one and a half years until I could work again. Long-term stress is dangerous. Toxic workplaces are dangerous. It's not worth it.
quechimba··on Devtools for mobile browsers
This is really good.

I used this a few years ago when my laptop had died and I had to get some work done. Bought an USB keyboard, installed vim, zsh, tmux, ruby, node and postgres in Termux on my phone. Small screen but worked pretty well. Had to use devtools and I found this.

quechimba··on WhatsApp corrupts DB, breaks App
I communicate with my dentist on WhatsApp. They send me appointment reminders the night before and I have to confirm.
quechimba··on Ask HN: Has Google search switched to infinite scrolling for you too now?
I'm paying and I find it worth it because YT Music is included so I could cancel my Spotify subscription.
quechimba··on Rich Kilmer on the Power of Ruby (2007)
Ruby is really good at concurrency now with non-blocking fibers. https://github.com/socketry/async makes it really easy to use.
quechimba··on Children 13, 9, 4, and 1 found alive in jungle 40 days after plane crash
This man survived 26 years alone in the jungle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_the_Hole

The kids are indigenous and knew how to find food. Kids from the city would probably not be able to survive this long...

quechimba··on Children 13, 9, 4, and 1 found alive in jungle 40 days after plane crash
Wow, this is amazing! I wouldn't survive even one week alone in the jungle. I hope they will recover soon.
quechimba··on React, but in Python
Yep. And nowadays you can deploy apps really close to users so latency is really low. If you have <100ms you don't really notice the latency.
quechimba··on React, but in Python
Nice! I believe this is a really good approach for making web apps. Best part is probably that you save time by not having to implement some sort of JSON API for your frontend to communicate with your backend.

I've been working on a similar thing in Ruby. https://github.com/mayu-live/framework

quechimba··on Managing State with Signals
Thanks for the link. I really enjoyed reading both
quechimba··on Server-sent events
SSE is pretty good but I have never been able to see the messages in firefox devtools, and doesn't work with binary data.

HTTP/2 streams are just as easy to implement, and work both ways and support binary data.

quechimba··on Off-grid solar brings light, time and income to remotest villages
I read somewhere that a DC to AC inverter wastes 5-15% of the energy.

I guess what is needed to run lights would be a solar panel, a battery and an MPPT controller.

quechimba··on Off-grid solar brings light, time and income to remotest villages
Most houses don't have generators. Maybe I should have been more clear.
quechimba··on Off-grid solar brings light, time and income to remotest villages
I'll try to find out how people could afford buying generators. Solar shouldn't be much more expensive but I can't find any prices online.
quechimba··on Off-grid solar brings light, time and income to remotest villages
That's half the monthly minimum wage, most people here make even less, and everyone has at least a few kids to feed.

Also everything is more expensive because it's so remote. There are no roads so everything has to be brought here by airplane or boat. If you order something from Amazon (the website) to the Amazon (the rainforest) shipping is at quite expensive and then there's import fees too...

quechimba··on Off-grid solar brings light, time and income to remotest villages
Many families in the nearby village run generators at night. They can't afford solar panels so they pay 5 soles for gasoline just to have lights on when it gets dark. If they could afford solar they could have lights on every night for a one time cost. Most family don't have the luxury of running generators though.

This project sounds really cool. I wonder if this can be done in the Peruvian Amazon. I'm sure several families could share the same solar panel and battery if they only use it for lighting and charging phones... Funding would be difficult, no one has money here.

quechimba··on The Web I Want (2018)
I've been working on a React-inspired framework in Ruby [1,2]. It only requires a few kilobytes of JavaScript, and only includes the relevant stylesheets for each page. Works pretty well and I guess I'm in a rural area (about 90 minutes down the river from Iquitos, Peru) on a 4G connection.

I recently did another experiment [3] where each static DOM tree becomes a custom element, which also reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred.

I should probably make a Show HN post soon...

quechimba··on Seinfeld Transcripts
This website is great. I'm a huge Seinfeld fan and it's really good for finding quotes from the show.

I got all episodes in my phone so I can watch Seinfeld wherever I am even if there's no internet. Good to have when traveling
