qingcharles··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Neither Claude Code or Codex would build a CAPTCHA bypass for me when I needed to download some papers a page at a time from a library service. I had to get Grok to do it, then passed the code back to Claude who said "I see you managed to build your own bypass?"

Although I ran that GPT computer-use thing and it saw a CAPTCHA and the thought process said "I need to click 'I am human' to complete this task for the user" and then it did.

qingcharles··on Codex Is Down
Tried to fall back to Grok and got "Model provider is overloaded."

I'm now on Muse Spark. God help us all.

qingcharles··on Codex Is Down
GPT, Claude and Grok are all down this morning. Gonna have to hand-write code like a straight savage :(
qingcharles··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I have a project that could use Fable, that fails horribly on Opus, Sol, Grok, Gemini and GLM etc, but I just can't afford to use it on something so frivolous. (Assuming Fable could complete it)
qingcharles··on The efficient frontier of LLM inference
> A model is a “frontier model” if it offers the highest degree of intelligence at a given cost or size.

I would define a "frontier model" as offering the highest degree of intelligence at any cost, or without regard to cost. The frontier today is clearly Fable/Mythos, with the "efficient frontier" at Opus/Sol.

qingcharles··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
A neighbor came to ask for help today. He got locked out of his Facebook account and was getting impatient with their AI, so he Googled "facebook support number" clicked on the first link (almost certainly an ad) and called the number. The person on the other end apparently told him they needed access to his bank accounts to verify his identity and you know the rest of the story.

This is the right question. Used iPads are amazing hardware for such little cash.
qingcharles··on Matrox: Graphics for Professionals
I remember the same. My whole game dev company went to one game developer show and everyone came back with a couple of GPUs each. Two out of the three games we were writing were 2D only.

My ex is a professional voice actor. Someone recently gave her a negative review saying she was AI, so now even the humans are getting unfairly penalized. I also heard a promotional video recently that used her voice, that she hadn't done, so someone has already trained their voice model on her.

Illinois County Jail Standards[1] provides that:

"Food must be of sufficient nutritional value and provide a minimum of 1,800 to 2,000 calories for adults"

Which is one of the worst written statutes I've ever seen. How do you have a range for a minimum? Of course, the jails aim for the lower end, which in theory should be sufficient for a sedentary population, but protein is highly expensive and most of those calories are cheap carbs which don't satiate the prisoners.

Also, the Jail Standards are not enforceable by the courts as Illinois courts can only enforce laws which have a punishment for non-compliance and are therefore deemed mandatory. Otherwise they are just directory. People see the word "shall" in statutes and assume that government officials must comply, but that is not the case in many states.[2]

Food for prisoners is really back-stopped by the 8th and 14th Amendments and their requirement is simply that you don't die of malnutrition.

qingcharles··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
It's a good idea, thank you. I hadn't thought of it. Assuming Andy Onions had access to the 6502 code to work from. It should be fairly trivial to figure out from the shape of the x86 code.
qingcharles··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
I see it absolutely everywhere still. We all exist in our own bubbles.
qingcharles··on Show HN: OpenTIE and OpenXWA, Modern Ports of Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance
+1 -- that would be an excellent idea. A lot of these would work great ported to web and the download is small enough that you'd barely notice it. Tie Fighter probably ran off floppy originally?
qingcharles··on Show HN: OpenTIE and OpenXWA, Modern Ports of Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance
Yes, a lot of these are much improved by reverse-engineering them and adding a few tweaks to modernize them. Many of them have added support for different display aspects, since most retro games are tied to 4:3. I downloaded the new RE of Sega Rally the other day and it was nice to have full proper widescreen.
qingcharles··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
No, not at all. I know where I worked there was zero code reuse across teams and games.

Games of this generation had code that wasn't intended to be supported or managed after release (no patches for those consoles) and so the code tended to be fairly horrible.

qingcharles··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
It's usually just the first sweep to make sure everything is understood and documented before you start to make mods.
qingcharles··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
I dunno. I was a gamedev. I'm pretty sure everything got thrown out. I don't remember ever taking any source home. It was all managed through Visual Source Safe (!) on a local server.

The 80s games were mostly coded in bedrooms, but after that it all moved to teams in offices and a lot of studios went boom-to-bust pretty quickly.

qingcharles··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
I just did one last weekend, but it is a game that was clearly written in assembler in the first place (Elite 8088 CGA).

Trying to reconstruct the original build environment that Andy Onions (where are you?) used took some time. It was assembled with 16-bit MASM, but you can't easily run 16-bit exes under 64-bit Windows, so a bit of a kludge to set up DOSbox where the LLMs can push/pull in-and-out of it while being able to drive it enough to execute MASM and read the stderr and output files etc to get a feedback loop going.

Making up plausible function names and branch labels was pretty quick for LLMs.

qingcharles··on Tell HN: PayPal blocks GrapheneOS
Yes, but you might have to enable desktop mode on a mobile browser so it doesn't try force-spawning the app.
qingcharles··on Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS
For the unbanked, PayPal is like Chime and Cash App. A quick way to be able to deposit incomings and get a debit card where you can spend them.
qingcharles··on Zohran and the Short Link
Ha! That is genuinely confusing for a moment. What is the solution? Wipe the account and archive it all somewhere? That destroys all the meta-commentary that exists in other Tweets. Maybe just some system that lets you mark all previous posts with something that says "This account is for a government official. This post was made under the tenure of a prior holder of this position."
qingcharles··on Zohran and the Short Link
All these anti-socialists never questions who pays for their roads, their schools, their police, their fire service, the military, the FAA, the USPS, their libraries, their parks, the courts, NASA?

Are all of these right-wing people paying privately for those?

qingcharles··on Serve Markdown to AI Agents with Accept Headers

qingcharles··on What Happens When the Cost of Intelligence Drops 100x
When LLMs arrived I thought of all the jobs people wouldn't want a computer to do, and top of my list was religious figures. But then I read an article saying people use chatbots as virtual pastors now. I did think about Gently.

At least it can't replace the horse in my bathroom.

qingcharles··on I spent $266 and four AI models to own my tablet. GLM-5.3 finished it in a day
0x Alpha is unlimited free tokens this weekend so I had it take apart the original 8088 PC Elite and reverse it back to original MASM assembler and come up with plausible names for all the functions and data structures and check that it compiles back to byte-perfect original.

Wild!
