I hope you had a warning sign that said "Beware of the leopard".

I coded one of these for whatever was the latest Nokia handset ~2005. Live on-stage reveal and demo to the world's press by CEO IIRC. The software on the phone was supposed to run off our co-host server, but bugfixing down to the wire, so nobody knew but the demo was running off a half-built PC in my buddy's closet connected to his janky cable modem with us watching and sweating and praying. It would have been really, really bad if that demo had failed on-stage.
qingcharles··on I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
I would too. Google Ads are the absolute quickest way to lose your shirt. You need masses of experience (or a straight scam) to run a profitable ad campaign. Their agents will hound you to the ends of the Earth the moment you start reducing your spend.
qingcharles··on I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
Yeah, USPS is a weird one.

We need a .QUANGO domain for stuff like that :p

qingcharles··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
The sad thing is if you go through that final step you'll probably receive a permanent ban.

But if you go on Swapd right now and pay a Meta employee $500 while it's still in appealable state you'll get your account unlocked in an hour.

Make it make sense.

Friend owns a construction company. Been at same address for seven years. Suddenly their Google Business Page not working right. Google says to delete it and reverify, only solution to try.

Four times my friend had to take a video: you have to start by standing on the street on the nearest intersection, film all the street signs around you to prove your location, then he had to walk down the street, show the gate with the business name on it, the vehicles with the business name on them, open the front door with the business name on it, give them a tour of the working office and show them invoices and bank statements laid out on the desk with their logo etc on it. Three times they came back and said it wasn't enough to verify.

At the same time you can go on swapd and buy GBP verification for $500 and have it verified in an hour by someone who fakes the entire thing.

qingcharles··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
It's not the trailers most people are mad about, but ads for products that they stick before the trailers even.
qingcharles··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
I really enjoyed the movie. Had some really, really funny moments. I was hoping for more of the legal aspects to be explored, but that doesn't happen :)

Claude and GPT are absolutely horrible for doing any research which might remotely be considered on the edges of copyright infringement. You can't prove to the AI that the copyright wasn't renewed on this book, or that magazine, or that you actually hunted down the rights owner and bought the rights.

End up using Grok for most of these tasks as it is dialed back a bit in that regard.

qingcharles··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I've been testing it today. It's fine. It's like base-level GPT or Gemini. I actually kinda like the cute thing it does where it emoji reacts to your messages before it acts on them. Grok Bot needs to steal that.
qingcharles··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I'll be interested to see what access it gives you to Meta products.

Grok Bot doesn't have direct access to Twitter like Grok on x.com does, for no good reason, but it does have an API plugin which gives you free $20 credit if you install it.

When these companies want to lock you into their platforms it seems kinda dumb to not give their own products access to their own products.

qingcharles··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Only for about a week. Then they saw sense and started rolling it out to the peasants too.

I use it every day now, having it look a few times a day for glitched pricing deals and hunting down useful directories to list my projects in.

qingcharles··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
You joke, but then you remember his cow obsession:

qingcharles··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
If you're not seeing a downvote button your account is probably in some hole :p
qingcharles··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Surely the Astras and Fables of this world would make light work of setting up a WebOS build environment and be able to create practically any changes you can think of, especially if there is a way for them to iterate the development.
qingcharles··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
There needs to be a crowdfunded jailbreak of all these TVs firmware so all of these dystopian features can be hard disabled. I'm guessing the mainboards of these things have zero protection from someone clamping on their flash ROMs or tapping the bus; these are hardly X-boxen or Playstations with uber-DRM. (Assuming you can't just force new unsigned modified firmware directly into them via USB)

qingcharles··on Keep Our Servers Running
Absolutely deserves a donation too. How it keeps running is beyond me, especially as he/she/they keep adding more paywall bypasses on the backend.
qingcharles··on Keep Our Servers Running
Just donated. Appreciate the reminder.
qingcharles··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
I don't know if it is still the case, but when I was writing some Wikipedia articles I discovered the British monarchy seemed to use Twitter exclusively for some purposes.
qingcharles··on Black Hole of Los Alamos: Seller of surplus nuclear research materials (2011)
Was always a great source of original parts for prop replicas. Found a ton of exact Ghostbusters proton pack greebles there.

The other main source is the hazmat special:

https://apexsurplus.com/

(careful coming back through LAX with parts from there, it set off some sort of detector last time, although they took one look at the stuff I had, rolled their eyes, and sent me on my way)

The DP Review page is worthless, but it links to the museum here which is a nicely designed page, but written by LLM, so be warned:

qingcharles··on GPS glitched across the US by as much as 33 feet
It's mostly pretrial detention on GPS, so unconvicted.
qingcharles··on GPS glitched across the US by as much as 33 feet
I know chaps. He absolutely has cases where people were reincarcerated through faulty GPS pings, he's just trying to avoid listing a bunch of defendants.

He does a ton of really great journalism, a lot of FOIA work, to try and keep governments honest. Here's one of his struggles:

qingcharles··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
If they didn't conform to the T&Cs of the site (they almost certainly didn't), then they have violated the criminal law in some jurisdictions (e.g. Illinois criminalizes violations of T&Cs).

Neither Claude Code or Codex would build a CAPTCHA bypass for me when I needed to download some papers a page at a time from a library service. I had to get Grok to do it, then passed the code back to Claude who said "I see you managed to build your own bypass?"

Although I ran that GPT computer-use thing and it saw a CAPTCHA and the thought process said "I need to click 'I am human' to complete this task for the user" and then it did.

qingcharles··on Codex Is Down
Tried to fall back to Grok and got "Model provider is overloaded."

I'm now on Muse Spark. God help us all.

qingcharles··on Codex Is Down
GPT, Claude and Grok are all down this morning. Gonna have to hand-write code like a straight savage :(
qingcharles··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I have a project that could use Fable, that fails horribly on Opus, Sol, Grok, Gemini and GLM etc, but I just can't afford to use it on something so frivolous. (Assuming Fable could complete it)
qingcharles··on The efficient frontier of LLM inference
> A model is a “frontier model” if it offers the highest degree of intelligence at a given cost or size.

I would define a "frontier model" as offering the highest degree of intelligence at any cost, or without regard to cost. The frontier today is clearly Fable/Mythos, with the "efficient frontier" at Opus/Sol.
